Book report: Then Beggars Could Ride, R F Nelson 1976. If you never heard of this one I wouldn’t be surprised. At a time when technicians rule; when whatever your idea of utopia can be created with other like minded people in various pods, it can be boring. The supposed hero starts with living in the American Flapper era. He is also suicidal and remains so off and on. He runs away to a harbor to become a sailor in an era about 1890, jumps to an era where Sherlock Holmes is real, and on and on. This book has been autographed to my brother and I doubt he ever got past the 1st chapter. So unless you are into moody stories, don’t bother with this one.

My father would always say “If wishes were horses all beggars would ride”

Cowellian’s first.

Y’all have a great weekend!

What are these characters doing along Farm Bureau Rd. with 2 people on bicycles and some robotic vehicle that precedes them? They said they are mapping bicycle lane, but they’ve been doing it for many months along the same street. Who is paying for this nonsense?

Saw them about 2 weeks ago; concord av and diamond bvd.
Did look peculiar… For got about it til your post….
You can bet we’re paying for it…..

Over by Home Depot Concord there were two guys wearing black, including masks on an electric tricycle following what looked like a large ice chest on wheels. Perhaps they are experimenting with a robotic vending machine.

They have been doing this for about 2 years around Detroit ave too…I always wondered what is the purpose.

I see them often as well, and assumed it was some kind of autonomous vehicle testing.

My pet peeve of the day is people who spell “border” incorrectly.

A border is a boundary, as in U.S.A. / Mexico border.

A boarder is someone who pays for meals and lodging.

I can’t believe there are so many people who get this wrong.

I know the difference, however I find sometimes when typing on the computer I make stupid mistakes that I never did when I had to handwrit a letter. Also you have to watch everything carefully because of autofill, sometimes the computer is ahead of you and gets it wrong, then you have to go back and correct. Sometime autofill is good, helps with spelling other times it’s a big nuisance.

@DR. JELLYFINGER..…One that bugs me is when people use “breaks” for the things that stops their cars, it’s “brakes”. But you can break your brakes…hmmmm???

Well NYTEMUVR, I was saving that one for Sunday…. but I have plenty more.

Good call.

Hanne, LanguageTool is a free grammar checker that will proofread as you type. It will point out most spelling and grammar mistakes and offer suggestions. https://languagetool.org/

One of my pet peeves is when people mispronounce the word “often.” The t is silent, the word is pronounced “ofen.” I had a girlfriend in high school, and she would always correct me on it. After all these years, it stuck with me, and now it bugs me when I hear “often.” Another pet peeve is when people write “alot,” a lot is two words.

and that’s why I offen misspell the word…

I was always told to spell like you speak…. my spelling is terrible…
🙂

That is not true in the English language, there are several letters that are pronounced different. The Dansish language is terrible that way. Often the d is silent, like land, which in Danish means country, but we don’t pronounce the d. Several words starts with hv, but the h is silent. German however is pronounced the same way it is spelled, but the grammar is awful. A door might be a he, a chair a she and a fish neuter. Mark Twain wrote a hilarious short story called “The awful German language. If you at all like Mark Twain and like to read and want a good laugh I highly recommend it.

Not pronouncing the “t” and pronouncing the “t” are both correct. Your girlfriend was right. See Webster’s.

You’re right, but Webster’s, and other dictionaries, are frequently being updated. When I was in school, pronouncing the t was incorrect.

You are right about often. Now, do forte.

If you are talking about the musical term to play something loud, it’s pronounced fot-tay.
But if you’re talking about something that you’re particularly well suited for, it’s pronounced fort.

Try Celtic, the correct pronunciation is keltic, but since Americans mispronounce, and even coin new words, modern dictionaries have to update their pronunciations and definitions.

Try Sanskrit. There are eleven tenses and precise pronunciation for Devanagari script. There is even a translation method of translating a sentence to Sanskrit and from it translating back to another language.

Mine is “Anyways” instead of “Anyway”.
Whenever I hear someone say “Anyways”, I expect them to say something else such as, “Liketa hitcha upside the head.”
But as Erma Bombeck said, “The grass is always greener over the septic tank.”

Pick One:
.
A) Bok Choy
B) Leek
C) Yuck

Leeks, my dad use to grow them. A favorite dish were porkchops served with leeks, carrots, new potatoes (first crop of my dad’s potatoes were very small and firm, had a nutty and buttery taste) or brussesl sprouts. Steam the veggies, then coat with butter and fresh chopped parsley or dill.

@S
Haven’t had Bok Choy that I know of and am not even sure about a leek, but after reading about them, I choose B).

A. I’ve sometimes cooked bok choy stir frys.

Definitely leeks. Great in soup.

Agree my mother always added leeks when she made chicken soup.

“A” is my preference

I finally figured out what my favorite commercial was, it was the original Geico pig Maxwell hanging out the car window as they drive down the road he’s holding a pin wheel and shouting “Wheeeeeeeeeee”!

I mute audio during commercials. But a couple years ago ad agencies got wise to that and added text for what was being sold. Otherwise most ads look like a bunch of people acting silly.

Escaped being bacon too it appears.

That one made me smile and cringe at the same time. I can appreciate the play on the phrase, but that “wheee” annoyed the heck outta me.

Haven’t watched regular TV in over a year (just no commercial movies). My wife was watching her regular garbage and I walked thru the room for about 10 different recorded series.
Wow talk about woke garbage and commercials. I don’t see how anybody watches that trash on TV nowadays stuff and all they gain on since down people’s throats and woke crap.

I have been listening to “Mack the Knife” since the sixties, mostly by Ella Fitzgerald, but also love the Bobby Darin version. I know the most of the words, however it was not until recently that I learned what the song were about.

So a mystery question, what exactly is the song “Mack the Knife” about?

@HANNE JEPPESEN….Always thought it was about a Jack the Ripper type, don’t forget Satchmo’s version.

Yes, l know Satchmo’s version. I don’t care for it. It is about a murdered MacHeath. Some young people on Utube we’re listening to it and one of them figured it out. However, she thought all the women Jinny Diver, Suki Tawdry, a few more were victims as well, but someone wrote they were hookers lining up to help MacHeath spend the money he stole from his murder victim. Amazing such a nice song can be so dark. It is original from a German opera. When l send the Bobby Darin version to my German girlfriend, she only knew it in German.

I read somewhere that it’s about Jack MacHeath, a butcher, who was a serial killer in London. He escaped to South America for 20 years, and returned to London killing prostitutes. That’s why in the song, they say, “now that Macky’s back in town, look out, old Macky’s back!” The women mentioned in the song were the prostitutes he murdered. It was rumored that he was Jack the Ripper, but never proven.

That sounds right, however there’s a line in the song that goes, the line forms to the right, thus someone thought it was hookers lining up to help him spend his stolen money. Either could be right not that it matters, but fun to speculate.

Hanne, what you said about the line forming on the right makes sense. Now I’m wondering if he murdered them after he had his fun with them.

Ha. ha, could be. I wouldn’t put it past him.

I just want to tell you both good luck, we’re all counting on you.

I know money is tight, but our furry friends at the animal shelter, could use some toys.
It makes your heart feel good and brings joy to our furry friends.

I am really tired of the Covid commercial on TV , where did they get these people, so annoying!!

Most commercials according to my wife the actor pools for them is who can be the weirdest and most woke crap. We try pretty hard to avoid the news or any commercials. It’s not that hard to do when we record everything.

I also really like the New Day USA commercials with Juliana Folk revealing just a little more cleavage with each new commercial.

Here is some “food for thought” … pun intended.

I saw this recently while studying for my certification as a food is medicine practitioner.

“Without proper diet, medicine is of no use … With proper diet medicine is of no need”

Chew on that neighbor!

Anybody catch Dave Chappelle’s recent stand-up routine in San Francisco … just keeps getting worse by his telling of the state of the city. Really sad about that once wonderful city. What a cryin’ shame.

NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace decided to flip off the camera in a post race interview.
Always the charmer, he is unique as he is the only driver with a Continental Kit on his car.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence coming to a Major League Baseball game near you:
The LA Dodgers rolled over, so to speak, for the Sisters.
Funny, there doesn’t seem to be any actual data as to how many, err, members the Sisters have. Therefore it’s curious a ball team would capitulate to a group of unknown size, that likely don’t attend ball games (at least this kind) anyway.
Something tells me this is another example of the Alissa Heinerscheid effect:
Never pi** on your own client base.

The movie “AIRPLANE!” was based on the movie “Zero Hour” I never knew that!

https://tinyurl.com/yn8b27a2

@DR. JELLYFINGER….No one speaking “jive” on that plane.

Well, that was just a 5 minute clip of the movie highlights……
I’ll have to watch the whole movie to see fo sho.

OK. I just watched “Zero Hour”
No Soul Brothers speaking jive but there were 3 Scotsmen speaking with heavy Scottish accents who were drinking a bottle of booze in the back of the plane. Nothing else was very comical in the film but I couldn’t help but laugh at all the “Airplane!” scenes I recognized.
Give it a watch when you have 90 minutes to spare.
