If a coyote’s eyes are open he is looking for food.
Anything small enough for him to kill is a meal as far as a wild dog is concerned, including the little pet dog you are walking if he can pull it away from you.

I once saw a big ol tom cat chase a coyote away.
No hissing or posturing
everytime the coyote stuck it’s face in it got four scratches on its snout
after the third swat, coyote ambled off
Would have bought that cat a beer
if such a thing were possible.
Hotel in Bremerton WA. 2003 or so.
I saw a coyote kill and run off with a neighbor’s cat right in front of the family that owned it.
Kids were horrified. I’ve seen coyotes run thru my old neighborhood carrying dead cats in predawn hours on several occasions. Sorry if I come off like Doctor Downer….
I just dislike coyotes for good reasons.
