What is the Point in Time Count?
- The Point in Time (PIT) Count is a snapshot of the number of families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Contra Costa on ONE night.
- This count is required by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for all communities receiving their homeless service funding.
- This information is used to decide how much funding communities get to help with homelessness.
What Am I Being Asked to Do?
- Volunteer to be part of a one-day, county-wide project to count unsheltered people in Contra Costa
- Work in a pair (with someone you know or you can be paired with someone)
- Either drive (if you have a car), or capture data on an iPhone-based app while your partner drives
- Choose the area where you will do the count (with some limitations)
When Do You Need Me?
- The week of January 13 for one (1) two-hour IN-PERSON volunteer training. You will select when/where you want to do the training when you register. Central, East and West county locations are available.
- PIT Count: Thursday, January 30 from 5:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
How Do I Sign Up?
- Please sign up using the Volunteer Registration
Sounds like a blast! 🤣
Can volunteers choose to pair up with a carrying member of LE? … maybe with a K9?
A volunteer could do it….OR!!! how about a high ranking city official does the task? Maybe, just maybe, they can come down and interact with the homeless individual and families to understand some of the reasons why homelessness happens.
Yeah, none of them city officials would do it because it is beneath them to get close to someone down on their luck.
Hmmm, doing the count between 5:30 and 9 AM. Wouldn’t a lot of homeless folks be in a tent or a spot not easily seen from a car at those hours in the morning?
Ikr. The “limitations” to the areas chosen to be searched might actually hinder the finding of the majority of homeless. In my opinion unless the volunteers are willing to park their vehicles to head out on foot to some secluded areas, walk along trails and other places unseen from the view of the public roadways then many will go undetected for the count
We pay them to help us out of our tax money. The least they can do is THEIR JOBS. We are all working ourselves ! What do they think we have a ton of free time to help them for FREE ?! Crazy. No. a lot of us have families we barely see because we work full time. How disrespectful.
