The following is from the Pleasant Hill Police Department:

On October 23, 2024, at about 6:40 PM, the Pleasant Hill Police Department responded to a two-vehicle collision on Contra Costa Blvd at Dexter Drive. It was determined that a motorcycle traveling northbound on Contra Costa Blvd collided with a vehicle turning left onto Dexter Drive from southbound Contra Costa Blvd. Northbound Contra Costa Blvd between Massolo Drive and Ellinwood Drive were closed for several hours due to this incident,

The lone motorcyclist, an 18-year-old Pleasant Hill resident, was transported to John Muir Hospital with major injuries. The motorcyclist later died from his injuries. The lone occupant driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was not injured.

Our investigators are still actively investigating the accident and ask that anyone with information regarding the motorcycle collision contact the Pleasant Hill Police Department at (925) 288-4600.

very sad. Too young to be on a motorcycle. The age should be changed to 21.

Too young to be on a motorcycle what kind of stupid comment is that?
Well why your at it why don’t you chastise the driver that made the left turn in front of him as being incompetent and shouldn’t be driving at all.

Do you even know what does on in an 18 year olds head?
speed speed speed and distraction., not enough experience.. They feel invincible.. You seem to be out of touch with reality.
Time will see who is at fault.

According to NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) – accidents by age groups:

16-20 account for 12.1%
21-24 account for 10.7%
25-34 account for 22.6%
35-44 account for 17.4%
45-54 account for 14.2%
55-64 account for 12.0%
65-74 account for 7.1%
75+ account for 8.0%

As you can clearly see the age group most likely to be involved in an accident is the 25-34 at 22.6%, followed by 35-44 at 17.4% followed by 45-54 at 14.2%. Coming in basically tied for 4th most likely group to be involved is 16-20 at 12.1% & 55-64 at 12%.

You anecdotal evidence is not backed by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records.

As to the PCF (Primary Collision Factor) of this accident, the press release states and I quote: motorcycle traveling northbound on Contra Costa Blvd (Through traffic) collided with a vehicle turning left onto Dexter Drive (Cross Traffic) from southbound Contra Costa Blvd.

That mean the driving of the car made a left turn and proceeded E/B across the through lanes of traffic for N/B CCB and failed to yield to the on coming M/C who was proceeding N/B on CCB.

  • According to the DMV handbook section 7, laws and Rule of the Road – Turning left: Check for pedestrians. Give the right-of-way to any pedestrian or approaching vehicle that is close enough to be dangerous.

That is also codified by California Vehicle Code Section 21804(a) CVC which to paraphrase says through traffic has the right away and vehicles crossing against through traffic shall yield and shall continue to yield until safe to continue their movement.

If you can come up with another primary collision factor that coincides with the information in PHPD’s press release I’d love to hear it.

Which part?

The statics from NHTSA?
My PCF on the 11-79?

What does the motorcyclist’s age have to do with this collision?

The car crossing N/B CCB to E/B Dexter is at fault for this accident.

21804(a) CVC – a vehicle crossing the highway from pubic or private property shall yield to all on coming traffic close enough to constitute a hazard AND shall continue to yield until they can proceed with reasonable safety.

The driving of the car is looking at misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter 192(c) PC –driving a vehicle in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death, in an unlawful manner, and with gross negligence.

.. agree … and the defense of “I didn’t see him until it was too late” doesn’t satisfy the court – even if the motorcycle was speeding

Sad for this guy. Motorcycles always lose vs cars.

My heart goes out to the family of 18 yr old that died. May their family be comforted at this time of great loss. My heart also goes out to the other driver as I could not even imagine how I would feel if I was in an accident that caused anyone to die.

People should wait until the police investigation has concluded.
The professionals will determine who’s at fault.

Imo, left and right turns should not be allowed between Dexter and Contra Costa. I have had close calls in that stretch of road, mostly with trucks.

The vehicle driver was driving like any other person would at that intersection so dismissing the speeding or the deceased is just not right
