Cowellian’s first.
It sure seems too early for school being back in session.

I have to change about 1/3 of my commute when school’s open – the freeway’s more crowded and I don’t dare go anywhere near Las Lomas High School. It was nice during covid – freeway traffic just flew!

First?

So here’s my latest observation:
When buying gas, I used to get the receipt at the pump. Now, the machine asks if I want a receipt and I press “Yes”. There’s a whirring noise and the machine instructs me to take my receipt, even though no receipt has emerged. I have to go into the office and ask for a receipt.
At first I though they were lazy about reloading the receipt tapes.
Then I thought it was a cost-saving measure.
First Mate set me straight – she says it’s to make you go into the office where the snacks and other convenience store items are, to get you to buy them. Makes sense to me.
Has anybody else noticed the lack of gas-pump receipts or is it just at my local gas stations?

I buy gas inside the store so I wouldn’t know. If you’re having to go inside to get a receipt just pay inside. It’s safer. Gas pump machines outside are full of skimmers.

sorry mariner, I do not ask for receipts, so other than wasting 20 seconds of your time with this response, I have nothing to add.

Absolutely no problem at the Costco gas stations. The receipts always come as soon as I press “yes”

Conspiracy theory. I attribute it to cheap paper in a roll.

Yep! At Arco all the time!
I need the receipts for my work because I use a company vehicle.
I don’t much like waiting in a long line just to get my receipt,

Pretty good headline: 17 Remain Dead in Morgue Shooting Spree. Real? Uhhhh, I doubt it.

Break dancing at the Olympics I was unable to change channel at restaurant in WC and saw that garbage. What’s next Cornhole game?
Unbelievable to say the least what they consider Olympic nowadays.

No Cornhole, Twerking Competition was on next… you should have stuck around.

By the way, I think we’re overdue for MLB to have a “Mommy Mascot” for each team.
She could be trotted out to kiss the boo-boo each time a player gets hit by a pitch or fouls the ball off his foot or wherever… except maybe some of those Catcher bell ringers.
I think it would encourage the players to wipe away the tears and stand back up alot faster to keep the game going.

Conceptually, that was my impression as well. But it was on this morning, and I watched it. And I surprised myself by enjoying it immensely.

Dance-type competitions have been part of the summer and winter Olympics forever. Why not break dancing? The athleticism was amazing. I’m bummed that it won’t be back at the 2028 Games.

Break dancing made its debut in Paris 2024. When it came on, I turned off the tv. Thankfully, break dancing won’t be at the games in Los Angeles 2028. It’s not a sport.

PG and E bill is the highest I have ever had! We have a small place! Highway robbery! They are ripping us all off, really bad! I called them, thinking someone was tapping into our place! Or there was a mistake!
They just wanted to talk me thru the bill. I just wanted to cry!

All PG&E rate increases are approved by the CPUC, snd all CPUC commissioners are appointed by Governor Newsom. The buck stops with the Governor and the California Legislature. PG&E is their baby. 100%.

Elected officials and appointed buddies should be required to divest all stocks etc before they can accept a position in something like the CPUC. Maybe they are already required to? I don’t know.

July was the hottest month in CA on record, dating back to 1895. Or the hottest July, whatever I read this morning. If you ran your A/C of course your bill would be a lot higher. Ours went up by 70% and that’s with a 9% decrease in rates (starting in July according to PG&E) and turning our thermostat up 1 degree. I was surprised when the bill came but it was a painful reminder how expensive it is to run our A/C. We had a choice of being hot and miserable or paying a much higher bill. We went with the latter.

I take advantage of the low temperatures overnight to cool the house inside low enough that even on a hot day the AC isn’t needed.

I’m on propane out here in Tule Land, all PG&E provides here is electricity….. Bill was over $800 !!!!

😲 Holy Swearword. 😲Holy Swearword 😲Holy Cow!

Pardon me if this borders on political 😉 SF Gate story today about $113,000 spent to buy lock pouches for student cell phones. That comes to about $40. per student…. BUT ONLY THE KIDS AT MT DIABLO AND YGNACIO VALLEY ARE BEING FORCED TO LOCK UP THEIR PHONES DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.
Really? Do the kids at the various “continuation” “special needs” “academy” High Schools, AND all the kids from the ‘wealthier’ neighborhood schools just roll over and put their phones away for 6-7 hours like good little kidikins?
Hard to tolerate or understand why those two schools are being singled out?
95-96% OF the students at both schools are minority…and around 60% are “economically disadvantaged” according US News and World Report.

SO…. why has the District decided to enforce this discipline on just these school, these students?
Yeah, we know poor kids are more likely to cause trouble….. [don’t shoot the messenger] …. But something here just does not seem to be very kosher to me.

MDUSD did a walk through prior to so maybe they noticed kids at these two schools were less attentive. Mt Diablo has always been at the low end of education and since the 90s so has Ygnacio Valley. This is happening in San Mateo County too which happens to be a wealthy county.

Dr. J. That is crazy. Here in Oregon, we’re quite a bit behind you, but our utilities are doing their best to catch up with PG&E.
