AAA Northern California Celebrates Roadside Assistance

Each day, California roadside assistance workers come to the rescue of motorists in need. AAA Northern California extends its gratitude to these dedicated drivers who respond to over 2 million calls across California each year. In recognition of their hard work, California has proclaimed June 23-29 as Roadside Assistance Worker Appreciation Week.

Summer is the busiest time for AAA Northern California’s roadside assistance team. AAA estimates that it will respond to nearly 800,000 calls for roadside assistance nationwide over the upcoming Fourth of July travel period alone, which is 5 percent more than last year.

“Drivers can show their appreciation for tow truck drivers by adhering to California’s Move Over Law,” said Dan Hutchinson, Chief Roadside Officer for AAA Northern California. “With the busy summer driving season underway, it’s important that we remember to give our roadside heroes the safe space they need to help stranded motorists on the side of the road.”

California’s Move Over law requires drivers to reduce their speed and, when safe, move over to the next lane upon encountering emergency and maintenance vehicles with lights flashing. Violators face financial penalties and points on their license.

In recognition of Roadside Assistance Worker Appreciation Week (June 23-29), AAA Northern California encourages drivers to:

Stay alert, avoid distractions and concentrate on the task of driving.

Watch for situations where emergency vehicles, tow trucks, public service vehicles, or disabled vehicles on the side of the road.

Slow down and, if possible, keep one lane away from workers, motorists and their vehicles stranded on the side of the road.

This is pretty cool! I don’t work for AAA anymore but I’m still out working on the side of the road. Most tow operators love what we do but it’s a crazy dangerous job. A tow truck driver is killed on the side of the road every 6 days in North America. Please watch for our lights and give us room to work! We just want to make it home and get you home safe as well.
