City Of Concord Wants You To Report Illegal Fireworks Using Concord Connect APP

by CLAYCORD.com
19 comments

All fireworks (even those labeled “safe and sane”) are illegal in Concord and all of Contra Costa County, except for permitted professional displays. This includes bottle rockets, roman candles, firecrackers, and sparklers.

Fireworks are dangerous and cause fires, which can result in severe injury and even death, as well as costly property damage.

People who possess, discharge, sell, or manufacture fireworks will be cited and fined.

To report illegal fireworks activity, please use the City’s Concord Connect app. Select “Make a Request,” and click on “Illegal Fireworks Reporting.”

In 2023, the Concord Police Department deployed this successful strategy to help decrease fireworks-related calls to 911, improve response times to community reports of illegal fireworks use, and deter fireworks usage overall.

Between May 24, 2023 and July 5, 2023, 493 reports of illegal fireworks usage were reported through the app, while 79 fireworks-related calls came in through the City’s 911 or non-emergency dispatch phone lines.

If you are reporting an injury, fire, or medical emergency, please call 911. If you are not reporting a life-threatening emergency, please use the app so the Police Department can keep its 911 dispatch lines open.

This is good. Last July 4 (actually early in the morning July 5) a house in our neighborhood caught fire, which spread to vegetation of an adjoining house. Cause of the fire was improperly disposing of “safe and sane” fireworks that the family had ignited the evening of July 4. Fire Department was on top of it and prevented a disaster on a larger scale.

On July 4 self-indulgent people flaut the law with illegal fireworks. So glad we now have the resource to report this illegal and dangerous activity.

Any material involving flame should be held in if possible a metal container for day and a half.
Ashes from wood burning stove at first house were collected in a metal container with lid and sat outside on cement for a week or more before disposal. Example, about 17 years ago 04:30 driving to work glanced over and saw orange glow reflected off a garage wall. Owners had emptied ash trays in garbage then taken it out to plastic tote. Only thing left of tote was a blob of melted plastic. Garage was a little scorched and they had to replace part of a fence.

It has already started in my neighborhood with airborne fireworks after 10 PM. But I won’t install any more spyware on my phone.

We cannot rely on the Police dept. or the City leadership to resolve the use of illegal fireworks. If we want to get things done. We as a Community must come together to get things done. If we can assemble enough volunteers, we can focus on an area of the city to witness what homes are setting off fireworks. We can then put pressure on the City that they will stop. Keep in mind that this would take time. Email concordfirewatch@gmail.com if you are interested

Let’s see: fire, explosive material, people with a high school education (or less). What could go wrong? High school acquaintance Jerry lost a thumb and 3 finger tips playing with cherry bombs. I almost got blown up with an unexploded grenade in Vietnam. Some fool forgot the wire safety around the spoon when they tossed it into our base swimming hole. I steer clear of devices that go boom.

These kids with illegal explosives don’t stick around after they light them. By the time anyone at the police department reads your post it will be too late to catch them.

Bill Cutting June 20, 2024 - 6:36 AM - 6:36 AM

How about a designated zone or build a man-made lake where people can fire off fireworks over the lake you know something like a compromise instead of being draconian. Plenty of open parking lots in Concord you could convert into a fireworks lighting zone for Fourth of July. Actually bring the community together. Have the police and fire department there in case anything goes wrong. Just an idea. I’m sure the insurance liabilities would be through the roof, but it’s better than the garbage firework shows that go on around here, you might actually meet somebody in your community. The city can make money allowing food and drink to be sold.

sleve June 21, 2024 - 3:37 PM - 3:37 PM

Ill be sure to send reports that fireworks are coming from Police HQ in the app.
