Yet despite the turnouts, drivers still cross the yellow lines on blind corners to overtake cyclists.
One question…. How many tickets have been given out for this common and dangerous activity over the last 5 years?!?!
Why not make certain days for bikes only and certain days for cars only? Wouldn’t that be more enjoyable for everyone?
@Pepe – The early days of the 2020 pandemic were great as the park was closed. The only motor vehicles on the road were a few rangers on patrol and the residents. Both groups are familiar with the road and how to safely pass a bicyclist. I found that bicycle rides were much safer and enjoyable.
I’d rather see a model though where a few times a month the gates are closed and locked for motor vehicle traffic other than the rangers and residents. Bicyclists can ride any day. I’m not sure though if people using the campsites could be classified as “residents” or would not be allowed to have their vehicles on the roads on the bicycle days.

I don’t see how the turnouts would have prevented the collision that is at about the one minute mark in the video. The bicyclist being a little more aware would have helped a lot. That said, the turnouts will make things safer for everyone. I assume they are located at blind turns where a motor vehicle going on the wrong side of the road a bit to pass a bicyclist can’t see who or what is coming downhill.
Most of the time its these road bikers who are all over the road and dont care about others, riding in the middle of the road and into oncoming traffic lanes coming downhill at way too fast speed. Turn outs will help but unless there is a separate road for road bikers there will always be accidents. I ride and also drive occasionally up Mt Diablo but never stay on the road if at all possible when im on the bike, stay on the trails much safer for everyone.
The activist who they are interviewing was NOT hit on Mt Diablo……but in the community of Diablo!!!
I had to drive Mt Diablo monthly for work and I saw my share of cyclists cutting turns as they fly down the hill.
