Book report: Between Planets, Robert A. Heinlein, 1951. Mother born on Venus, father from Earth, and our hero born in space. Early years on Venus before school on Earth. Suddenly a message from parents to meet them on Mars. Then a second message to remember to say goodby to a special friend. There is a package to be delivered to parents. War/rebellion breaks out and the story goes on from there. Fun story but sadly another case of an old paperback falling apart.

@Frank
In case you missed it, a few weeks ago Atticus said he was taking the summer off of Claycord.com.

Dr. Jellyfinger May 14, 2024 - 8:18 AM - 8:18 AM

Is he P’OD at the moderator again?
I did that once…. I got all butt hurt about some of my really tame comments being deleted so I quit posting for about a month or so, but eventually I just couldn’t let so many dumb comments go unanswered and I started posting again…. blame DOH & JWB.
I don’t think anybody noticed my absence tho.

Local fishing holes: does anybody have a favorite place to fish? Obviously, if it is not a crowded place (a secret spot), withhold the name, but describe the body of water, fish landed, etc., for fun. I have not had much success in any of the areas I have fished, not being a “good” fisherman, but still a good time.

I do have one question: as I drive along Rte 160, along the Sac river, I see many people fishing on the banks. I have always assumed this was not legal. Anybody know, is it legal?

domo May 11, 2024 - 1:22 PM - 1:22 PM

…. going to San Pablo Reservoir? …. off the tip of Scow Canyon, towards the steeper side – cast to the inlet side – early

Dr. Jellyfinger May 11, 2024 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

It’s legal to fish there unless posted “No Trespassing” but you better be sure it’s legal to park (you gotta be off the road) I think there is no levee parking allowed on most of Sherman Island. There is a nice public pier next to the Antioch Bridge. There is great cat fishing to be had at Brannan Island State Recreation Area (I’d use live minnows or frozen shad) and anywhere you go you’d better have a fishing license because there is always a good chance you will be checked out there.

There is also a public pier in Rio Vista (bring a crawdad trap too).

They should be visible again tonight.

Which country’s Eurovision entry are you rooting for? I like Ukraine’s entry, “Teresa and Maria”. Time to get out and enjoy the sun.

California Toad May 11, 2024 - 1:07 PM - 1:07 PM

Thanks for the question. One thought: Extend “Whatever” to every day? We all have interesting stuff to contribute – an everyday “Whatever” might be fun, and a little easier than scrolling down through days’ worth of older posts. Also, maybe go easy on questions about favorite restaurants?

Hanne Jeppesen May 12, 2024 - 12:01 AM - 12:01 AM

I use to watch Eurovision back in my native Denmark. Denmark even won one year “Dansevisen
Grethe and Jorgen Ingman, husband and wife. Jorgen Ingman was also famours for “Apache” an instrumental song that also The Shadows was known for. Of course I prefer Ingman’s version, he died a few years ago, in his nineties.

It used to have a lot about goings on in the community. We could always go here to find out what was happening. It’s turned evolved into negative Nellies complaining. People are tired of it.

THE BLACK KNIGHT May 12, 2024 - 8:49 AM - 8:49 AM

BOB,
.
It used to be if there was some sort of police action going on in the area or the Sheriff’s helicopter was out, then Claycord was the place to go to find out what was going on, but unfortunately that’s no longer the case.
.
Claycord has become a site that seems to primarily posts press releases from different government agencies and some non-governmental groups and organizations.
.
The loss of “Talk About Local Politics” was unfortunate, but somewhat understandable due to few to no comments some weeks, but it was a detrimental loss for the community. Posts about local politics just get overlooked and lost on the “Talk About Politics” page.
.
We have way too many Claycordians who turn comments on every thread into something about national politics. It can become overwhelming and exhaustive.
.
It’d be nice to know exactly what the Claycord policy is on the editing and removal of comments. It doesn’t seem to make much sense given some of the comments that remain up.

I noticed that about the obituaries….. I’m pretty sure some people have died in the past 6 months. Maybe CC should let some mortuaries know about the free obits?

The Black Knight,

The policy on any site is the same. At the sole discretion of the person moderating comments. It’s common sense.

I gave up smoking 36 years ago. I gave up eating out daily this year and I never carry a credit card balance…. never cared for designer brands, all else are still “essentials”.

Dr. Jellyfinger May 16, 2024 - 6:14 PM - 6:14 PM

I felt like cheering myself up so I tried to figure out how much money I saved by quitting smoking a pack a day 36 years ago……. If the price stayed at $1.44 per pack since I quit that would be nearly $19,000 dollars. Current price in USA is about $8.00 per pack of 20…..so go figure.

Dr. Jellyfinger May 13, 2024 - 5:15 PM - 5:15 PM

OK Y’all…. if you can stand someone saying “Y’all” over and over again, watch this video & take a few notes to make a killer Cornbread Casserole.
Really, I was impressed….. Muy Sobroso! (I made 1/2 and it was plenty for 3 of us).
You could also make this with Carnitas or Chicken… (maybe add some green chilies too)
Just for fun, try counting how many times Kiera says “Y’all”.

Ok….OK…. I did my best.
If any of you between now & some years from now find yourselves on your death bed only moments of life left…. you’ll be thinking “I wonder if I should have tried that cornbread casserole Dr J had such a hard on for?”
Well………. yeah, you should have!
Now you’ll never know what you missed and it will torment you thru eternity!
