Luigi’s Delicatessen, located at 2709 Clayton Rd. in Concord, was shut down this week after a health inspection confirmed evidence of a rodent infestation, according to the Contra Costa County Environmental Health Department.

The health department says they decided to inspect the deli after a complainant claimed he saw a rat crawl down from the ceiling on March 25. He said the rat then allegedly walked into the deli case and started eating the potato salad.

A health inspector says they found the following during their inspection on April 22.

  • Observed openings and cracks on wall, ceiling, floor corner surfaces in water heater and rear bulk bin container areas.
  • Observed buildup on floor corner surfaces throughout rear kitchen storage and office area.
  • Observed debris on ground surface outside rear door and above outside storage area.
  • Observed gap on front door.

The restaurant has been reinspected amd reopened.

Disgusting, you know that place was NEVER the same once they sold it to someone else.

I grew up in that deli. My family worked with the og owner. Then after he sold it to one man or want too bad. But after he sold it to another man it went to crap! He burned all the og vendors and they never had stock. So sad.

Another place bites the dust in my NO list.

So sad. This used to be a top-notch deli.

Nevermore.

This is horrible! However, I believe when the lights go out at night in any food establishment, the roaches, mice, and rats come out full force! Once the lights go on in the morning, they’re back to their hiding places!

Last time I went in there was a couple years ago and it gave me nasty vibes then. No surprise now.

Complaint of a rat coming down and eating food in the case… and it took you a month to get out there?

Nothing like a rat in the deli case to kill business.

That place fell off years ago

So those weren’t raisins in the carrot salad?

15

Never again.

What a shame. Was the best deli in the area for decades. I had friends come from Oakley Brentwood just to get a sandwich and salad. We grew up on that place. Someone who cares should buy it.

Oh man, say it ain’t so. I love their sandwiches.

I’ve been there 3 times in the last 8 years. Every time, mediocre or worse. It doesn’t hold a candle to Parma or Morucci’s. Sorry. That whole shopping center needs to be demolished and something good put there.

I quit going there after I found out who took over the business.

Used to be a great deli but is not worth visiting now. Been there a couple times in recent years and experienced terrible service and poor selection. Change of ownership many tmes results in this.

Which begs the question, why are the food choices on Clayton Rd. so awful? It’s all dryrotting strip malls from the 1960s with either lousy franchise food, or weird places that open for a month and fade away. Can we please get some way to reinvigorate this area? It’s got to be the worst “food armpit” of Contra Costa county!

Agree. What a waste of a great location. But that’s Concord for you. No more mexican food

The entire shopping center should be leveled and rebuilt, ever since new houses were built at Clayton and the Alameda all the wildlife went to all the buildings and houses in the area, and for the last 10 years they all have mice and rats, and squirrels and racoon problems. When you build on a 4 acre field, the animals have to go somewhere.

Run away rats at Luigi’s sounds like a great Nintendo game.

This place fell off after it was sold. No lie, I saw one of the people working the counter dunk their entire arm into a jar of pickles. No gloves, no tongs, just bare hands and arm into the jar. She also dropped some change into one of the trays of food in the display case, and then just proceeded to pick out the coins with her bare fingers. That was the last time I went there, and this was at least 6-7 years ago. I’m not surprised, but I am disappointed at what Luigi’s has become. This place was one of my favorite delis at one time.

that must have been Marcie, large ,in charge

What?!? No video?

Potato Salad?
He should’ve tried the 3 bean salad, really tasty & a healthier choice too.

I’m surprised that none of the regular Claycord posters have yet blamed Newsom or Democrats for the Luigi’s problems…

I’m sure Luigi had plenty of money to devote to pest control despite Biden’s outrageous inflation driving prices up for everyone and every business…. and less money for consumers to spend on non necessities like going out to eat.
Newsom should be held blameless as well even tho he shut down almost every restaurant (except his own) during the Pandemic, everyone has managed to make up for all that money they lost, well…. except all the ones that went out of business for good that is.
Nope…. Luigi owns this.

Who could blame him the potato salad is to die for
