Two patients and four firefighters have been transported to an area hospital this morning, following two traffic collisions on southbound I680 in Walnut Creek.
The initial solo collision occurred just before 9:55am, when a box truck collided with the center divider, just south of Olympic Blvd. The second collision occurred around 10:18am, when a vehicle collided with ConFire Truck 1, at the original collision scene.
Both the drivers of the box truck and second vehicle required extrication and were transported to an area hospital, in critical condition. All four firefighters on Truck 1 were given an initial medical assessment at the scene by the crew of a medic unit, even though all of them reported they were fine. The Battalion Chief made the decision to have all of them transported under “precautionary” status, to an area hospital.

The initial solo collision occurred before 8am as I saw the fire trucks and the overturned truck on the way to the gym.
What fire truck? I didn’t see a bright red truck with red flashing lights!
Sometimes the lights draw the extra dim right to them. Like mosquitos to a zapper.
They were trying to maneuver around the initial accident when another vehicle side-swept them into the firetruck and fled the scene. The story is still developing until they find out who the other driver was. But yeah, let’s be disrespectful and mock the victims in a terrible accident where their family can read it…

Sometimes True, But not in this case!
I wonder if the vehicle hitting the fire truck was a Tesla in self-driving mode. Teslas on autopilot seem to be attracted to emergency vehicles’ flashing lights like moths atrracted to a porch light.
Again always a possibility, but not in this case.
Box truck was obviously driving way too fast for the wet conditions.

I was getting off southbound 680 at Olympic at the time. The CHP was already on scene, the first fire truck was to my left and working to get from the right lane to left side where the collision scene was, and the second fire truck was in my rear view mirror and would arrive in a minute or two. The entire scene was plainly visible due to the way southbound 680 loops over the 680/24 interchange with a slight downhill and zero obstructions. The CHP vehicle was ablaze with lights. Both fire trucks were the huge ladder trucks also with all of their lights on. I assumed the first truck would position itself to protect the CHP vehicle, the truck that collided with the wall, plus bystanders and that second fire truck would be backup protection. People could not miss seeing the scene plus traffic was jammed up a bit, and yet someone ends up running hard into one of the fire trucks?
Some people just shouldn’t be driving. You definitely weren’t paying attention if you didn’t see a big a** fire truck and must have been speeding if you have to be extradited from your vehicle. Hopefully the firefighters truly are ok!

Californians can’t drive in rainy weather… or dry weather for that matter.
I’ll bet the Side-swiper did not have either a license or insurance nor possibly both.
