Two men suspected in an armed robbery have been accused of attempted murder after trading gunshots with pursuing Benicia officers.

The incident Friday involved more than 17 law enforcement agencies and closed Interstate Highway 780 for hours.

Neither of the men, ages 33 and 39, nor any officers were injured, police said Saturday.

An automated license plate reader alerted police at 9:22 p.m. Friday that a vehicle involved in a holdup was in the area of Columbus Parkway and Rose Drive.

Officers who tried to stop the vehicle came under fire when it fled on I-780, police said.

The vehicle crashed at the bottom of the eastbound offramp to Military West, where one man was captured.

The second ran back toward the freeway, shooting at officers, who returned fire, police said. He was eventually found hiding in bushes in the highway median.

Traffic on I-780 was shut down in both directions between Columbus Parkway/Rose Drive and Southampton Road until about 5 a.m. Saturday.

Benicia police said the arrests involved the California Highway Patrol, which provided a helicopter; officers from American Canyon, California State University Maritime Academy, Concord, Emeryville, Fairfield, Hercules, Napa, Pleasant Hill, Richmond, Rio Vista, San Pablo, Vacaville and Vallejo, the sheriff’s departments of Contra Costa, Solano and Napa County, and Solano County SWAT teams

If the crooks were less than 50yds running away with with a clear background, which evidently was the case, both the robbers should have at least been winged, minimum. Someone might need more range time.

Actually yes, and I used to competition pistol shoot many years ago.

The answer is actually “No”, I have not been in a gunfight were someone was trying to kill me.

All my knowledge is based solely on shooting on a closed range where my safety was of paramount concern and everyone was a range safety officer who could call a cease fire at anytime for any reason.

50 yards seems like a nice even number to completely make up.

Adrenaline and shooting on the run can make your aim a little shaky, but what do I know?
I’ve never shot anybody….yet.

Have you ever heard the Vietnam era term “Broken Arrow”? In a nutshell it means that a military unit is about to be overwhelmed and annihilated. All available military resources will be diverted to save that unit regardless of the cost.

11-99 “officer needs help” is the police equivalent. An officer or officers are in immediate threat of death or great bodily injury. This call went to an 11-99.

Whenever an officer broadcasts an 11-99 all police agencies (Police Departments, Sheriff’s Offices, Special District police, CHP even Federal Law Enforcement) in the county and in some cases outside the county will respond with emergency lights and siren until the scene is secure.

Law Enforcement agencies will continue to send officers and resources until the officer(s) in need have been secured.

They do not happen very often thankfully but when they do, peace officers stop whatever they were doing and respond as if their own lives depended on it.

Thank you for the clarification.

Thank you for a knowledge based comment.

It didn’t actually “…take 17 agencies…” However~~People from 17 agencies left their previously-assigned posts to Get A Piece of Shoot-em-up-Action!🤠~~~ I, for one appreciate the outcome… but surely would like to see some “mug-shot” action. 17 Agencies and two in handcuffs…leaves very little room for “allegedly.”

It would have been even more if there was a naked lady involved.

Captured on other side of the river so they stand a better chance of being incarcerated for awhile.
Will we find out later they are convicted felons on probation or parole?
