The City of Martinez approved Eden Housing’s proposal to expand affordable housing at the historic Riverhouse Hotel, located at 700 Alhambra Avenue in Downtown Martinez.

The project includes the conversion of existing ground-floor commercial spaces into nine new affordable units.

Additionally, the project includes a multitude of other improvements to the Riverhouse Hotel that will increase the quality of the lives for existing and future residents, including accessibility upgrades, bike lockers, seismic upgrades, and new landscaping and benches along Alhambra Avenue.

The remodeled Riverhouse Hotel will also have enhanced office space for Eden Housing staff to aid in their ability to better serve residents.

Martinez is like a disfunctional parent that always makes bad decisions based on money.

Crime in the neighborhood imploding in 3….2…..1…..

I live a few blocks away. That hotel is already a bum hotel – but there’s not really any problems with the folks that live there. I don’ t think a few more units will change anything. Better than having them crapping on the streets.

My reply was overly harsh. Lots of the people there are elderly – and quite a few in wheel chairs, etc – missing limbs. The place is pretty quiet. My point stands – won’t make a difference. There’s bigger issues downtown that that hotel/motel. I’m sick of the crazy lady with the short blond hair – always throwing stuff.

The place is a dump. Chronic bed bug infestations, mini-fridges that hold very little food, substandard shower stalls and tubs, community kitchens that are hardly ever used, tenants feigning craziness, crazy tenants not taking meds who then get booted back onto the street.

Putting benches on Alhambra, between Main and Green, is a bad idea, because the area is congested with bus and vehicles. So lots of noise, dirt, and exhaust fumes. And they’ll just collect dirt and random people sleeping in them as well as destroying them.

Indeed, I was thinking how that corner will get busier. Half the time one doesn’t know where a resident there is going and sometime they might not know either.

Just when Martinez was finally recovering from its meth days of the 90s.

When did this “recovery” you speak of begin?

Probably never, just being optimistic..

The government creating housing, what could go wrong. What are the application requirements?

Three fun facts about how your tax dollars subsidize “affordable housing” for “needy” families:

1. Fun Fact: A single mom with two kids earning $100k is eligible for a $3,400 annual rent subsidy!

2. Fun Fact: A single parent with two kids earning over $100k is eligible to rent a 3 bedroom home with a “fair market value” of $3,144.

3. Fun Fact: An ACTUAL market rate 3 bedroom apartment in WALNUT CREEK is only $2,500/mo!

840 square foot is not exactly a standard three bedroom. Sounds like they may have converted a closet or two into rooms.

This hotel has held for the most the dregs of society always. There are legitimate good tenants there trying to live a good life in a good way but for the most part the dregs of society right at the beginning of a downtown that is finding long overdue renaissance of recovery! Now welcome the former old ways of Martinez where more dirtbags will be mingling with a downtown filled with the families an safety desired and intended to a recovering businesses district Bravo the genius of Martinez city counsel is back Bravo!!! Read the police reports of this place it’s insane!

The tenants will drive away any potential shopping/restaurant business downtown. Just watch.

Yeah, but the politicians need to show that they are “doing something” so they get re-elected. 😄

So does this cost the taxpayer or not?

Yes. sure not the private sector.

Of course, the people that will live there don’t have any money to fix it up.
