There is a kmart in Australia

Not a surprise. It’s been quite a few years since Sear’s was anywhere near the great store it used to be.

How very sad that a once mighty retailer has been brought to this by a greedy financier. I recall fondly, years ago, ordering from the Sears catalog so many useful things. When a new appliance was needed, Kenmore rose to m ind. The ease of repairing Sears appliances that used screws as opposed to rivets was so easy for the home handyman and the legendary “lifetime guaranteed” Craftsman tools were unbeatable. All down the drain. An American tragedy and seemingly there is no light at the end of the tunnel. As I said, so sad.

I remember going to Sears with my dad to get replacements for his Craftsman tools. Oftentimes it was wrenches he’d break trying to get a stubborn nut off one of his classic cars. Agree it’s sad to see it decline the way it has. As kids eagerly anticipating the Christmas catalog, who would’ve imagined?

i grew up with Montgomery Wards as my go to; was sad when they folded.
.
For a time, it looked like J C Penny would fold b4 Sears…

It should die. It’s bad.

Pretty shallow statement on your end.

Growing up in SF, I would always shop the Sears on Geary Blvd mostly for Craftsman tools. Guess it’s long gone!

I believe there is a Target in that former Sears location.

It’s a sad ending to a once great company. Sears had the opportunity to transition to an e-commerce behemoth that could’ve rivaled Amazon, and kept their brick and mortar location viable. After all, the internet ordering and delivery model is the 21 century version of the late 19th century and early to mid 20th century catalog ordering and delivery model that Saers mastered.

100% correct!
They already had the distribution network in place and could’ve easily adapted to more online shopping options. Sad.

only because Sears owns that building and the parking lot. They’ve dumped all their leases and only kept the property they own as a real estate investment. Although it’s attached to Sun Valley, it’s separately owned and maintained, even the security is separate from mall security (or at least it used to be).

If that was a leased building it would have been closed over a decade ago. The PE firms that bought Sears bought it for the real estate, not the retail business.

@whatever – The owner of parcel 153-230-025, which is the Sears store plus the parking lots to the south and east of the store, is listed as Taubman Land Associates LLC. Taubman owns all of the properties between Contra Costa Blvd and the freeway from south of the Safeway store down to the corner of Contra Costa Blvd and Sun Valley Blvd. I too had assumed that Sears owned that property and that was why it was one of the 13 remaining Sears in the USA. As Taubman owns it the mystery runs a little deeper.

This is very sad! And actually the Concord store is very sad .. just hardly any merchandise in it and it seems like there’s only one cashier per floor. I don’t think it will last long either you can’t even buy Sears made work boots anymore.

Change is inevitable.
The niche is filled.

Eddie Lamper extracted amazing value from the carcass of Sears Roebuck & Co. In so doing he conferred a terrific windfall upon Sears’ shareholders who had written their holdings off.

He’s an extraordinary financial talent, though I wonder what business case justifies keeping zombies like the Sun Valley store open.

Wheel alignments were guaranteed for as long as you owned your car. I paid $70.00 for the first alignment, then every year I’d take the car in for an alignment at no charge. I saved a bundle because I had that particular car for over 10 years. Sears meant quality, Die Hard, Craftsman, and Kenmore could not be beat.

I worked in the Automotive building. I used to give those lifetime alignments out to angry customers, which there were plenty of due to incompetent mechanics and crooked service writers. They eventually got busted by the BAR. Monkey Wards automotive framed the newspaper clipping behind of the Sears bust, on their counter for all to see. They were just as bad, or worse. Sleezy beyond belief.

I never had that problem, my car would be ready in about an hour, and I drove off a happy customer. The steering wheel would stay centered, and the car would drive in a straight line without wandering left or right. I don’t know what years they started to cheat the customers, I had mine done in the 1980s.

They made a huge mistake closing Kmarts in suburban strip centers for the carcass known as Sears. Should have been the other way around.

Yeah only 13 left but Concord store has not yet closed… what’s taking so long?

I’ll always have a deep fondness for this store. Back in the day, we’d visit Uncle when I was a little girl into teens, and we’d all usually start there. If I needed a key made later, I’d drive my 64 Chevy Impala. My first vehicle.

Fast Forward adult life. Live here and would head there to grab some dance wear for class and over the years exercise equipment and much more.

It’s been one of the last stores for a while. I sincerely thought it was going to close last year or early this year, but it managed to hang on.

Shopping there is a sad experience, and nothing like it was in the past. Still, I picked up a vacuum cleaner last Christmas.

I remember when the place was bustling, and was the destination for many items. I used to have my taxes done there. I remember getting my tires replaced at the auto center.

Showing my age here but I remember the good ole days when Sears had fresh buttered popcorn. You could smell it when walking in the front door.

They also had cheddar popcorn at some locations….. Luv’ed the stuff

@SIMONPURE….Speaking of showing your age, I say tear all of Sun Valley down and turn the land back into tomato and cabbage fields like it was when I was a kid.

I thought Sears closed several years ago. I’m surprised the Sun Valley Mall is still open.

Sears had a small candy counter. Chocolate hay stacks were killer.

Penney’s was lucky enough to survive Ron Johnson. Sears hasn’t really survived, but Eddie Lampert thinks he can still enrich himself from these remaining Kmart and Sears stores.

Bought a Sears AC wall unit in 2003 and it is still delivering. Can’t say that about the LG fridge I bought 3 years ago.

I remember buying guns and ammo at the Sears when I was a kid. Ted Williams brand. I remember when they also sold minibikes. A kid that I knew got one. It had a 3 hp engine. Sears was a great store.

A troubled company always sells its best assets first. Once they sold off the tool business it was just a matter of time. As a metaphor, Baltic Avenue is all that remains…….

Guess I better take that broken ratchet back there for a Chinese replacement before it closes.

….. sad… used to go to Sears for everything (appliances to clothes to tools to tires and batteries, etc.) ….. if SVM wasn’t so much of a safety hazard in itself it might do better… that and stock their shelves again and get employees that give a hoot
