The death of a woman who crashed while fleeing from a California Highway Patrol officer was an accident, a Contra Costa County coroner’s jury decided Friday.
The verdict in the Feb. 8 death of Elsy Zapien-Vasquez, 31, of Pittsburg, was announced by Sheriff-Coroner David Livingston.
The CHP had been chasing Zapien-Vasquez on state Highway 4 for about 13 miles from near Bailey Road.
She left the highway, ran a light and tried to re-enter the freeway on an entrance ramp at Contra Loma Boulevard when her gray Saturn SUV collided with a tanker truck.
The sheriff-coroner’s office holds an inquest anytime law enforcement is involved in a fatal incident in Contra Costa County.
If you are not guilty then don’t run. Scared is only going to get you in trouble or killed. There is always time later to argue guilt but when you are dead not so much.
STUPID!!! why people do dumb things like this I will never ever know. In 55 years I have been pulled over plenty of times never had a bad experience & treated the officers with the respect they are due. No sympathy here completely preventable at least she didn’t take an innocent bystander out with her idiotic actions.
There used to be a term ‘death by misadventure’. Seems to apply here.

She was previously arrested in Vacaville in 2020, in a stolen car, for car burglary.
