The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

QUESTION: It’s 1993, but you wake up, and it’s suddenly 2023. What would surprise you first? (besides the 30 year jump in time)

Of course, the biggest surprise has to be the explosion of the internet, and how it’s taken over so much of our interaction with friends and family. Even bigger is how we’ve come to know so much about strangers who we would never have known existed before the internet.

My wife died a week and a half ago and we’re having the service tomorrow. They’re streaming it so all of her family in the Netherlands can watch. Apparently this is kind of a thing now according the Father that we met with earlier today. I never realized doing something like that was even a thing.

That is about where I would be, just slightly different. Instead of stranger, it would be gray haired man. Then, I’d wonder where the mirror came from, as in ’93, my mirror was in IL, not CA.

Before I turn on the TV and check the news, the first thing I would notice when I stepped outside would be so many illegals. As I drive down the street, (with my 30-year-old, expired driver’s license), I would be surprised by the heavy traffic, the price of gas, and the filth caused by the homeless. After a short shopping trip, I’d be surprised to see K-Mart, Mervyn’s and Grand Auto are gone, and Sears on its last leg, looking like a ghost town.
So now I’m hungry, I head out to the grocery store, and the price of food knocks my socks off. I get back home, turn on the TV, and see fighting in the Middle East, and all the protesting and rioting. Now I’m really confused, and wonder if this is 2023, or did I go back to 1973.

Midnight Towboy you must be new around here?

JWB November 7, 2023 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

According to the Oxford Dictionary the definition of “racism” is:
.
“the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another..

The statement: “you can easily assume with all the Hispanics, some if not most, are not citizens.” fits that definition in the assumption that Hispanics possess the distinct characteristics that some if not MOST are not citizens.

One can only wonder why you feel the need to defend that statement so much? But probably your handle explains it well.

3
4
Cyn November 7, 2023 - 9:35 PM - 9:35 PM

@JWB
American Heritage has another definition where it does not mention “distinct characteristics”. Again, some Hispanics are not citizens and there’s nothing racist about that. You did a search until you found a definition that you thought would fit your shi!-stirring posts. Tsk, tsk.

5
3
JWB November 8, 2023 - 7:51 AM - 7:51 AM

Cyn you must be kidding. How do you think the American Heritage definition below helps your position?
.
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
.
And here is the definition from Merriam-Webster:
.
a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
.
There is simply no doubt about it.
.
But what’s most shocking is the length you go to defend this behavior.

1
1
Cyn November 8, 2023 - 11:19 AM - 11:19 AM

@JWB
Just stop it. What FPN said was fact. It would be the same if the U.S. bordered Sweden, Norway, or Finland, and all of a sudden the U.S. is full of blondes. There’s a good chance SOME of them won’t be U.S. citizens. Nothing racist about that, just fact. My mother was a good example of that. You’re trying to cancel someone….trying to get them kicked off of CLAYCORD.com over something you didn’t like. For crying out loud, what’s the matter with you? I enjoy reading comments and having discussions with those I disagree (like you), and would never in a million years try to get you thrown off of here.

1
2
JWB November 8, 2023 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

@Cyn

First nothing FPN has said is fact.
.
The vast majority of U.S. Hispanics are U.S. citizens. About 81% of Hispanics living in the country in 2021 were U.S. citizens, up from 74% in 2010. U.S. citizens include people born in the U.S. and its territories (including Puerto Rico), people born abroad to American parents, and immigrants who have become U.S. citizens through naturalization.
.
https://www.pewresearch.org/shortreads/2023/08/16/11-facts-about-hispanic-origin-groups-in-the-us
.
This number doesn’t include legal non-citizen residents.
.’
“ for Hispanics, you can easily assume with all the Hispanics, some if not most, are not citizens.”
.
So, fact is that most Hispanics (81%) in the US are actually citizens and of the reminder some are legal non-citizen immigrants as well some are undocumented.
.
So why are you defending the original comment which finally has been taken down by the blog operator?

1
2
Cyn November 8, 2023 - 7:33 PM - 7:33 PM

@JWB
FPN said some if not most, and you’re focusing on “if not most”, whereas I’m focusing on the word “some”, and once again, it’s a fact that SOME Hispanics are not citizens. Maybe it’s the word Hispanic you don’t like. Well then, there are some whites, blacks, and Asians who aren’t citizens either. Not racist, just fact. And yes, I defend facts.

FPN November 9, 2023 - 10:05 AM - 10:05 AM

@CYN, I am Hispanic. That’s why I notice all the Hispanic’s who have come into our community and we talk. We know the vast majority our illegal. Maybe if I was Italian or German I would have worded it to say just that.

Hanne Jeppesen November 7, 2023 - 3:45 PM - 3:45 PM

It seems racist, it’s making an assumption without facts. I have known several young Scandinavian ladies that over stayed their visa. The were here illegally, they looked Scandinavian
Eventually they went back to their home country.
I was lucky l had my green card before l ever got here. I was not ready to go back to Denmark after one year.

1
2
JWB November 7, 2023 - 5:54 PM - 5:54 PM

It’s actually not just an assumption without facts. Saying something like: “most if not all people who wear glasses are non citizens” would be a statement without facts, But FPN’s statement goes actually further it says that being not a citizen is actually a characteristics of hispanics seen here. And that fits the textbook definition.
.
And by the way it has nothing to do with being liberal or MAGA the definition is not dependent on your political position.

4
4
MAGA SAM November 7, 2023 - 10:56 PM - 10:56 PM

“More hispanics in America are here illegally than legally.”
.
Is this a RACIST statement or is it a factual statement. And if it’s factual, does it also qualify as RACIST? I don’t know if it’s factual, but if it is, is it racist to notice? That’s the real question here, is it racist to notice things? jbw seems to think it is. I don’t agree.
.
I can tell you for certain, there are a lot of illegals here and someone should probably do something about it. It’s literally the reason housing is in short supply. Jobs are in short supply. Regular employer’s can’t afford to pay people what they need to live. Remember the portable classrooms that every school desperately needed? It’s the same thing.
.
The whole issue is about so much more than race. Claiming “RACISM” is a feeble attempt to gaslight low intelligence people into shutting up. It will never work on me, but then you already know that

Hanne Jeppesen November 7, 2023 - 12:30 PM - 12:30 PM

I don’t think that is correct. Where I work we have a lot of hispanic customers most of them have Macy’s card, you cannot get a credit card without a social security number, many pay with other credit cards. Certainly some hispanics are here illgally, but not only hispanics, chinese, middle eastern, eastern Europe, it is not fair to single out one group. Contrary to what some believe, you cannot get a job with a big company if you are illegal, meaning no illegals work at MacDonald, other chains and big companies. I have an insurance license I could not get that without proof that I was here legally. Years ago when I wanted to work at Macy’s at Christmas time, at that time I still had a green card, but my wallet had been stolen and it was in the wallet. I was able to find proof that I was here legally until Macy’s could prove that they would not hire me.

Dr. Jellyfinger November 10, 2023 - 8:59 AM - 8:59 AM

Hanne, I’ll bet you $100 I can get a Macy’s card for my dog.

Hanne Jeppesen November 10, 2023 - 1:36 PM - 1:36 PM

Part of our job description is to open up a Macy’s credit card. Most months I do about 10 sometimes a little more sometimes a little less. Not all get accepted, some only get accepted after talking so somone in the credit card department, often this is because they need to verify their identity. The factors that play into being accepted is, income, housing (how much is the mortgage or rent). If approved then they are told their credit line, most are $1000.00, low $300, highest $10.000.

Hanne Jeppesen November 6, 2023 - 1:01 PM - 1:01 PM

That I’m 30 years older, and don’t have the same good looking younger boyfriend. That I can no longer hike halfway to Half Dome, that my daughter is married with 2 children. Things not personal, social media, cell phones, how bold people are that steals from stores, including my workplace every day. That Trump was president (I actually liked him as a business person, he showed a different side when president) that Joe Biden is president. I always thought after John F. Kennedy we needed a younger generation to lead us, still feel that way with the coming election. Not surprised Israel still fighting for it’s survival, different players, but same old story.

Hanne Jeppesen November 7, 2023 - 9:28 PM - 9:28 PM

Same here, since KGO disappeared I often listen to Tom, he is one conservative I can listen to. He has several liberal callers that he lets on and seem to like. I agree with him on some subjecst. I find him for the most part reasonable, he kind of like Trump, meaning he like his policies, but not his personality. He goes a little overboard in being critical about the government in general, but that is just my opinion.

RICARDOH,
.
A person can be sentenced to less than 7 years for having killed someone.
.
Killing someone in a hit-and-run with no priors while being an illegal alien can/will get a person a sentence of 2 years.
.
Killing someone in a hit-and-run with 2 strikes and numerous other priors by a career criminal while in the commission of other crimes can/will get a person a sentence of 4 years.
.
They’ll then qualify for good behavior credit that will let them out early and concurrent sentencing ensures they won’t serve additional time. I’ve seen this up close and personal from our criminal justice court system on two different occasions, both having to do with the hit-and-run deaths of a family member and a friend.

Cyn November 7, 2023 - 9:55 PM - 9:55 PM
