I would much rather not have to through this commercialism every 12 months. So much is a waste of money, or the making of money, as it depends on which end your on.

No, not so much this year. I always gets stressed this time of the year. First of all we get very busy at work, we have new hires, although trained, need some coaching on the floor, I don’t mind helping new hires, in fact I enjoyed it, but if you are helping a customer and have several in line, you get kind of stressed between doing the best for the customer and at the same time helping out a new hire. Although majority of the customers are very understanding. Then I get stressed over the schedule, my daughter, husband and grandchildren lives by Pasadena, and it is very unusual I get enough time off to drive down or even fly down to spend Christmas with them. We are closed on the 25th, we celebrate Christmas eve, so I would have to be off the 23rd and 24th to be able to drive down there. I was 2 years ago, but that is unusual. I can ask a manager to try to change my shift, but that is unlikely to happen. I can also advertise it and hope someone will pick it up. If I’m off the 24th, it is possible someone would pick up by shift for the 23rd. So I have to wait until the schedule comes out (around Thanksgiving for the rest of the year). I always attend a Christmas dinner with the Scandinavian Club in the City, it is on a Saturday often mid December, since 1984 I have only missed 2, one because I was sick and the other due to Covid, well can’t say I missed it, because there were no dinner that year.
If I can’t celebrate Christmas with my family I will probably celebrate alone. I use to go to my friends house here in Concord and cook my Danish Christmas meal for him and his neighbor and another friend, but my friend passed away so that is not an option. When my daugher was growing up I always stayed home with her Christmas eve and cooked my meal and often invited other single friends to join us.
Hanne, you may be able to book a flight on Southwest that could leave late the 23rd (if you get off 24th) and get you back. Cost is maybe $250 (which is cheaper than gas, depending on car).
Thank you. I might look into it. No I don’t spend $250.00 on gas. My Toyota Camry cost about $65.00 to fill up, with the current prices, I can usually make it down on less than one tank. So about $130.00 or so. I also like having a car when I get there, so I’m not depending on someone picking me up. Sometimes I stay at a motel, depending if my stepgranddaughter is there. Anyway I appreciate your information.

It is not the Hanne Jeppesen Christmas dinner it is the Danish Christmas dinner that probably 95 percent of all Danes serve on the 24th of December. Meat is pork tenderloin, duck or goose, often stuffed with apple and prunes, caramelized potatoes, sweet and sour red cabbage, brown gravy. The dessert is rice pudding, but different than what you get here. Cook white long grain rice with milk, let it cool, add sugar and almond essence to taste, then add plenty of whipped cream. It is served with either a cherry sause or a caramel sauce and accompanied by a glass or 2 of Cherry Heering or Port. It is harder and harder to find the authentic Cherry Heering, although I’m sure I can find it on the internet. The website Nordic Living have really good recipes of all above mentioned in English.

Try not to think about or discuss politics during the Holidays. If you don’t like the commericial aspect of Christmas, keep your shopping to a minimum, stay home and listen to Frank Sinatra singing Silent Night, or Bing Crosby White Christmas and watch “It’s a wonderful life” with James Stewart and Donna Reed.

You can choose to not getting caught up in all the commercializing of the Christmas. Keep shopping to a minimum. Stay home, enjoy some good food. listen to Frank Sinatra’s Silent Night and Bing Crosby’s White Christmas. Watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” with James Stewart and Donna Reed.
Yes! I understand the holidays can be hard for some, and my heart goes out to them. For me, it’s a very happy time of year!
Don’t misunderstand my comment, I feel stressed this time of the year, because of work and a tough schedule, however I’m not depressed, and I have spend Christmas alone before, and does not bother me that much (benefits of being an only child) although now that grandchildren are a fun age (7 and 3-1/2) I hate to miss this special Holiday with them. However, if it is not possible I will drive down there in January with it is my birthday.

Thanksgiving is fine.
I dont like cold temperatures of winter, short daylight hours, nor the Christmas season. The latter is too commercialized.

Since I see Christmas stuff sneaking into store not long after school starts for the year it’s hard to excited about it.
I miss it. I miss the enjoyment I get from shopping for gifts, and the enjoyment of giving. I was never one to buy a simple gift without any thought, I would think of the person I’m buying for, and buy a gift that I felt they will enjoy and appreciate without giving any thought about the cost. This, coming from a guy who at times can be frugal and hates shopping, but for some reason, the Christmas season seemed to make it all worthwhile.
It’s all over now, too many loved ones have died in recent years, and the family is a lot smaller now. My daughter has taken over hosting Christmas dinner, and I am grateful, but it will never be the same.
I’m trying to remember the last time I was truly excited about something. Been a while. Need to shake things up though. Maybe a trip. I forgot the question.
Aw that is too bad. Getting excited about something keeps us young. Yes as we get older it is different. However, I think there is always something to enjoy. When I was single there was always a lot of excitement. I try to get into something new ever so often, or rediscover something. I have always loved music mostly Jazz, Rock and Roll and Folk, however several years back I decided to start to listen and learn more about classical music. RIght now, since reading Robbie Robertson book “Testimony”, I have rediscovered The Band, and especially Rick Danko, and have listen to whatever I can on Utube and read another book about The Band. It seems like a small thing, but it is giving me a lot of pleasure.
In a few weeks I will spend the weekend somewhere in Northern California with one of my best girl friends, look forward to that.
I love the decorations. Lights and sparkles. I used to despise the commercialism but I am much more humble these days. We bake/cook alot now. I am weary of ugly news/trends and look forward to silly pleasantries.
Excited no. Enjoy the holidays? Sure.
That said, I don’t like having house guests. The only thing worse than having house guests is being a house guest.

I always look forward to the holidays, starting with Halloween. This year, on Halloween, we suffered a loss, so we are all sad. I am sure this will impact Christmas, but I will try to make this as Merry as can be to keep my family happy. Right now, not looking forward to decorating for Thanksgiving, but as time heals all wounds, should get there in time for Christmas. Have to. I enjoy seeing all the decorations in the stores, and do look forward to my hood decorating (so, all you Claycordians who do decorate, I am looking forward to it).
