Or bikinis. Dress up like Darth Vader, maybe wear the most appropriate dress of all. A Bozo the Clown costume.

Never have been a fan of dress codes. One can tell a lot about someone by the way they dress.

I think it shows respect to dress in a professional manner.

Uhhh, the democrats all voted guilty in both trials, genius. The ONLY defectors from party line votes were republicans. Don’t let any facts get in your way.

Why not? Politicians are always telling the rest of us what we should or should not do, depending on the flavor of the politician. Why not mandate a dress code for all political levels and genders or whatever.

If a person cannot even comply with a dress code, how professional can they be fulfilling their position?

I think schumer was too afraid to require fetterman dress at least semi-professionally; instead, the clown gets to wear his clown suit. I am not one for dressing up, but he is a United States Senator for crying out loud. Have some respect for the position, the tradition, the importance of the Office (even if it has been sullied by many current members of that body). But I do suspect 5’7″ 160 pound 72 year old schumer was too afraid, literally afraid of the mentally unstable 6’8″, 375+ pound, 53 year old fetterman.

We have clowns on the right, clowns on the left…. do they have a dress code in a sanitarum? I think they should all wear sterile hospital clothing.

If the democrat eepresentatives want to be slobs let them be. Let them come in sweatpants and hoodies and Crocs for shoes. Actually most liberals really are kind of unkempt. I guess the hangover from the hippie days. But I advise the Republicans to still dress neatly.

Dawg September 19, 2023 - 1:57 PM - 1:57 PM

Not necessarily a dress code, nobody wants to be told how to dress, but they should have the decency and respect to dress accordingly. One senator said she was going to show up in a bikini. That could be good or bad. A young, shapely woman in a bikini would be sexy, but some men might be distracted by her. On the other hand, I could not envision Senator Feinstein in a bikini.
John Fetterman is a slob, and a liar. Before he was elected, he said he would follow the dress code. But the GOP shouldn’t be talking so much about it and making it such a big deal. That’s exactly the response the Dems expect from the GOP, and they are having a field day with it.

I think they should dress their colors, like street gangs. Blue tops and Red tops, show how much they hate each other and don’t give a rat about the people they are suppose to serve.

El D September 19, 2023 - 2:53 PM - 2:53 PM

No, politicians do not need a dress code. They are adults. Let them wear whatever they want. It does not affect their ability to do their jobs. In fact, I think the last few years have taught us that wearing a suit does not guarantee that a politician has any respect for the institution in which they serve or its traditions, any sense of decorum, or any respect for the Constitution.

Unbelievable! There is an image (at least) that should be upheld in both the House and Senate.

Hammer Head September 19, 2023 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

The way you dress is a sign of respect for both yourself and those around you. Like it or not you will be judged by the way you dress.

22
Led September 19, 2023 - 3:28 PM - 3:28 PM

It’s obviously less important than all the many ways Congress fails to do its job. But it is a nice symbolic example of how our society treats it’s institutions: they exist to allow individuals (some of them) to express themselves in their identity (if it’s a favored type). Whereas a same understanding of important institutions is that they shape the people within them. You grow into the role and that makes you more competent, more responsible, more public-minded, etc. etc.

I think this is why sports and the armed forces have maintained the respect of the public for longer (though as we’ve seen, that is in question now as well). It is more obviously true that sports players are being tried in the fire of elite competition, and that servicemen are being tried in the fire of military discipline. That the institution shapes the individual and makes him or her better in some way – better and more capable of achieving something largwr tham themselves.

Dress codes are meant to symbolize that. It’s a sign of a sick society when that is no longer obvious.

Glen223 September 19, 2023 - 3:49 PM - 3:49 PM

They act like slobs, might as well dress the part.

One would think they would have the common decency to at least look like they gave a $hit….

But this removes all doubt. They don’t respect the office, then they don’t deserve respect.

Period.

I’m not sure that a suit will make someone be more “professional”. That’s all in the head. In the tech sector we dressed casual and everyone felt relaxed and got stuff done. Save the suit for a formal occasion. How many times have you been robbed by those wearing suits?

With no dress code, there will be no need for a clothing allowance any longer.

But that allowance won’t go away, it may be increased.

Great, get rid of the dress code. However…………..Dressing well in classic, (not flashy) attire provides a psychological advantage when presenting or negotiating. A perceived advantage, even from within may still be an advantage.
When someone wanders in dressed like Fetterman, the perception among competitors is this guy must be really struggling. That’s a disadvantage in a presentation or negotiation.
Perception is reality.

I think it would be nice if they at least would dress in business casual. Dress codes are getting more and more relaxed all over. When I started at Macy’s in Palo Alto we had to black or dark colors, we could wear a colorful scarf (thus I have about 50) and a colorful blouse or top under a dark colored top (brown, navy, charcoal grey etc) we could wear something with a pattern as long as it was mostly dark colors. Now we don’t have any dress code what so ever, and I think it is too bad. We looked more professional the other way, I still wear mostly dark colors, because I have a lot of it and it is practical. Our managers still dress professisonal, but not necessarity in dark color. Male manager use to wear suit and tie, now the often wear a sweater and or just a dark shirt. Even our store manager do not always wear a suit and tie, even though he dresses nicely, so seems to me to be a sign of the times. Things change, I guess it is not the end of the world if our politicians wear something causual. I do think a sweatshirt and shorts is too causual.
