I think it was a couple of weeks ago that “S” had a melon choice when “Nytemuvr” said to put salt on watermelon and “Dr. Jellyfinger” said to use kosher. I have since tried that and cannot tell the difference. I put a couple of sprinkles and all I could taste was salted watermelon. Not a fan.
@CYN…..I think it’s a mid-western, “southern” thing. I was just always raised eating musk melon(cantaloupe) and watermelon with salt on them. Granpa used to pepper his melons too but then he put pepper on everything. People that worked the fields back then ate salt tablets and a lot of salt on food as they sweated a lot and drank lots of water.
Good point, Nyte – my Texas family worked hard on their farms – from can til’ can’t – salt was not just a condiment – it was an elemental part of their diet; went on practically everything. They ate like kings: plenty of farm-raised pork, chicken, fish they caught themselves – and dish after dish of home-raised vegetables on their long supper table – corn, tomatoes, butter beans, black-eyed peas, okra, green beans, potatoes, collards, you name it. The men drank discreetly behind the barn on Sundays after church while the women prepared a big Sunday dinner. The 14 original brothers and sisters lived long, long lives – all tall, healthy, and skinny as rails. Great weekend to all!

…..and here all this time I thought I was the only one who considered the Beetles to be overrated. Good one about the passing lane. And there is no shame in not knowing a Taylor Swift song. I know 1 title and that’s only because she sang that song with Def Leppard. Good post. 🙂
Although The Doors and The Band are my favorite sixties groups, l like the Beatles a lot. Did not in when they first became popular, my friends and l were into jazz. Dexter Gordon was living and playing in Copenhagen. However, when the Beatles came out with Sgt Pepper’s that changed. Also love Abby Road and the White Album. Probably Abby Road is my favorite.

In my opinion, the best part about the Beatles was George Harrison and his guitar. They sang “Help” live at the Hollywood Bowl, which was pretty good. Best McCartney song….”Band On The Run”.
Book report: Those Idiots From Earth, Richard Wilson, 1952-1956. This collection of 10 short stories bounces around from how to have a baby in 3 months instead of 9 and a story that will remind you of Peter and the Wolf. The Lonely Road might make you feel lonely. I’m sorry to say this is another falling apart book that will find its way to the recycle bin in multiple pieces. Since it was asked of the last similar fated book, this one cost of whole .35 cents.
As mentioned about a month ago when Robbie Robertson of The Band died, I was a great fan of his and the music of The Band. I finished his book Testimony, fascinating. I have gone back and listened to more of their music, some old favorites, The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek, others. Some I had forgotten about Stage Freigth and It makes no difference, sung by Rick Danko. I love his singing, he puts so much soul and feelings into it. Not that I don’t like Rich Manuel or Levon Helm, but there’s something special about Danko.
When I’m driving somewhere, long or short drives, I have the radio on, news, talk, but often music. I listen to the Eagle Sacramento 96.9 I think, 103.5 and 107.7 I hear The Beatles, The Doors, The Stones, The Who, Creedence Clear Water, Lynard Skynard, U2, Springsteen and many others, however I never hear anything from The Band. Does anyone know why? Curious in Concord.

The Eagle is great because they really mix things up and play the more obscure cuts, not just the hits.
107.7 seems to have a rather set rotation. They play Guns and Roses so much I swear Axl Rose must have ownership in the station. “Sweet Child ‘O Mine” over and over and over. I don’t get migraines, but I imagine that’s what they feel like.

@JoJo THE CIRCUS CLOWN…In ’85 I think the only place to stay in Lahina was the Pioneer Inn. I stayed there for a week in ’83. My room was across the street from the big Banyan tree by the docks next to the Inn….killer week.

From my recollection, the Spirit Poles, Crowell Smokestack demo and that jabrone that was dropping stuff out of his small plane at low altitude on his girlfriends house in Concord and it took a lot longer to stop him than you’d think it would.
Has anyone had a garage sale, sold at the flea market or online lately? Was it worth your time? Or did you just donate your stuff to charity?
Been over a year; Garage sale… My adult kids helped otherwise woulda’ been a hassle.

I always donate to charity. First, I am comfortable, not needing anything (other than better will power to control my eating). Also, I do not have the patience to set up tables, figure prices for everything, and then sit half the day, and then negotiate with people on prices (I’d just agree to whatever anyway).

What exactly is Danish Ham? I mostly see Black Forest Ham in stores or sandwich shops. We do have a popular open faced sandwich made with ham. It is a slice of ham (much thicker than ham here, more like Canadian Bacon) on buttered dark bread, then topped with what we call “Italian Salad”, which is green pea’s and carrots, cut into tiny squares and cooked just enough to make them a little soft, then mixed with mayonnaise.
@HANNE JEPPESEN..…”Danish ham” is just an old time reference to a canned ham, at least it was in my extended family. The sandwich you described sounds pretty tasty. I get this “Danish” bleu cheese that is made in Denmark and it’s made with Penicillium roqueforti bacteria just like many “bleu cheeses” from around the world just with different tastes and consistencies, it’s much creamier than most….now I’m hungry.

In general the Castello cheese are pretty good. Raley’s and Sprouts use to carry the Castello havarti with caraway seeds, which is my favorite. However, they no longer do. As for the Blue Cheese it has a fairly long shelf life to you could buy 2 and 3 at the time. Safeay does not carry the Castello brand.
Yes, I do remember seeing the canned ham, named Danish, I never took it seriously. Just like the Danish cookies that comes in a blue tin. They are shaped like the Danish cookies that people use to bake themselves at Christmas time. However, not they are all that bad, they bear little resembling to the real thing. First of all Danish cookis in different shapes, means different recipe, some have a strong vanilla taste, other cardomon etc. When I was growing up most household would bake many different cookes at Christmas time. Then in the month of December, whenever you visited a neighbor the cookies would come out. At that time mail was delivered by the mailman on bicycle. Since it was often cold, snowy or rainy, he would often get invited in for a hot cup of coffee and cookies. Sometimes a sandwich and a shot of Aqavuit (snaps) that warmed you up, even though I think it taste terrible.

Here’s a joke about lutefisk, if you are Norwegian please don’t get offended. I never claimed to be politically correct. A woman calls into a talk show in Minnesota, she is in a panic, she has scores of skunks under her house. How do I get rid of them she asks. The host answers “Oh, that is easy just put some lutefisk under the house and the skunks will be gone. Be sure to call me back and let me know if it works. There wasn’t much Italian about that salad, it was just a name, probably from way back before many people travelled and got to know real Italian food.

When I lived in New York in 69 and 70, Little Italy was a favorite for dinner. In fact one of the first dates I had with my exhusband, he took me to a restaurant in Little Italy. Place was very plain, there was an older woman singing italian songs, and the service was so and so, but the good was great as was the price, which might have something do with him taking me there. He also said he took dates there as a test, he didn’t want to date someone snobbish, and if they didn’t get that place he would be moving on. When we moved to San Francisco we would go to family style restaurant in North Beach, also Vanessi’s, Modesto Lanzone and others I forgot the name of, but great italian food.

Hearing the Clayton Council did vote to raise the fees; substantially, for groups wanting to hold events. Some event holders may not be able to afford it, so will cancel or look elsewhere. Like the BBQ event and such.

Nytemuvr. I think one was Capp’s Corner, fairly inexpensive, I don’t think we went to Original Joe’s, perhaps the one in Marin where we lived for 6 years. However, my ex worked in the city was business partner with a well known Italian, his family use to own Geyser Peak Winery (Joe Ciatti) so we often ate out in the CIty. And there was another one right on the square in North Beach, if I look it up I can probably find the name.
Nytemuvr, Did a little googling here are a few others Golden Spike and Cafe Sport. After I got divorced I would hang out at these places with friends or a date. Bohemian Cigar Store, Tosca Cafe, Adler’s Museum Cafe, Tivoli Savoy, and for dancing Silouettes. Would also pop into to City Lights Bookstore often they were open late and had a great selection. I loved North Beach, the atmosphere, the diversity of restaurants, store and cafe’s and I always felt safe, never worried about getting robbed etc. How things change.
@HANNE JEPPESEN…..No doubt we were running with different crowds but a couple sound familiar, Capp’s Corner and Tivoli Savoy ring a bell. It does take all kinds to have a good party. Definitely a great time to run around in SF.

Yesterday there were tables/ signs set up at Chevron Station at Treat and Oak Grove supporting Trump. There were anti- Biden shirts with inappropriate language hanging for everyone including children to see. Regardless of political views this does not seem ok to me. I for one, will never go to that Chevron station.
This is what it is going to take to keep the Biden administration from totally destroying the US, if they haven’t achieved that already. I’m not a Trump fan either but the spirit of what he tried to do against the global elite was good. It was for once that by surprise that the elite didn’t get their “selection”, Hillary.

I personally don’t believe bad words will send you to hell. That said, I don’t care for the use of such language around children.
However if I have a choice between my grandchildren seeing a t-shirt with a bad word, or some LGBTQ guy swinging his trunk in a parade, I would certainly choose the former.

I support Chevron in Treat/Oak Grove. Its so refreshing to see Republican flags who stand for the educated majority in this area. @S….”C”.….I remember those cards. Before RS closed it’s doors I went in to get some pilot light bulbs for my McIntosh stereo amplifier. I couldn’t read the number on the bulb so this younger clerk said he would just look them up. After about 10 minutes, no luck. He turned the reference book around and he was looking for bulbs in the computer section. He said I don’t see anything for stereo equipment from Apple. Sure do miss that place though. It was nice to just be able to replace and solder a burned 30¢ resistor on a circuit board to fix it, those days are long gone I guess.
