Marijuana Cafes Could Soon Be Coming To Contra Costa County

A bill to allow Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes in California has been approved by the Legislature and is headed to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk.

Assembly Bill 374, authored by state Assemblymember Matt Haney, D-San Francisco, passed the Assembly with a 66-9 vote Monday after previously being approved by the state Senate.

The legislation would allow local jurisdictions to authorize cannabis retailers to prepare and serve non-cannabis food and beverages and to sell tickets to live performances.

Haney’s office in a statement said the bill “will allow struggling cannabis businesses to diversify away from the marijuana-only ‘dispensary’ model and will bring much-needed tourist dollars into empty downtowns.”

Haney said, “To be clear, we’re not saying that coffee shops should be allowed to sell cannabis. We’re saying that cannabis shops should be allowed to sell coffee. It shouldn’t be illegal for an existing cannabis business to move away from only selling marijuana and instead have the opportunity to grow, and create jobs by offering coffee or live jazz.”

If signed by Newsom, the bill would take effect at the start of 2024, when local governments could then create regulations for the cafes. According to Haney’s office,

A boon for local/state police agencies as far as DUIs go. It wouldn’t surprise me to see officers stationed at
the cafes for some easy pickins. Better that weed would be consumed at home.

Inhaling smoke from ANYTHING is bad for one’s health.
.
… just more ill-conceived legislation from a San Francisco legislator.

1) As a working jazz musician for the past 40+ years, I am offended by the linking of cannabis to jazz.
2) I was a middle school teacher for several years at a school where kids smoked weed during their lunch break. If you think teaching a bunch of middle school kids after lunch at that school was normal, you don’t know what you are talking about.
3) These stupid politicians continue to take us down the wrong path. My message – quit voting for these warped polititions.

So, as an honest citizen, I am not allowed to buy standard capacity magazines, firearms, that are not neutered to meet state specifications, and I have to provide fingerprints and a state ID when I buy ammo.

Yeah, marijuana, a class 1 controlled drug is now being sold openly in cafés and in dispensaries. Followed by the legalization of magic mushrooms.

The founding fathers would be shooting by now.

I am against the legalization of pot, shrooms, drugs in general. Voted no for the prop to legalize. So I am against cafes for this very thing. However, I am in conflict because while the pot is legal, the (once free) citizens still have to jump through government hoops to open up a business, and my liberty loving self gets angered when I hear some cretin has to write a law that allows someone to open, or legislates how to conduct a business.

Next they’ll make it available in the brunch line at high schools. I suppose it would make the kids more cooperative and open to discussing gender options with a “hip” counselor. Don’t tell the folks……

You guys are making a mistake, making it ok for people to grow marijuana. There are so many growers in Oregon, stealing water from creeks, vandalizing, those that are growing Illegal, getting busted everyday, many on drugs. Marijuana is great for helping those that are sick, but younger kids are smoking it . It has got out of hand. Police are having problem’s keep up. I grew up in concord in the 50’s and 60’s, it was nice then, Just a few words I thought I would say. Bill.

Ian September 16, 2023 - 11:03 PM - 11:03 PM

What a terrible idea!! Our politicians have to go to this length for votes I guess
