In recognition of Suicide Prevention Week, Contra Costa’s Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) program is partnering with Find Your Anchor to build care packages containing mental health resources.

This Community Forum is part of the PEI Community Program Planning Process.

Participants will learn about the program with a particular focus on suicide prevention, engage in self-care, hear from guest speakers and receive resources.

Anyone interested in volunteering will help create personalized boxes filled with tools and reminders that provide support to people during challenging times.

The event will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 from 2-5 p.m. at Vicente Martinez High School, 925 Susana St., Martinez.

Contra Costa County’s PEI program is funded through the state Mental Health Services Act. The current PEI budget provides over $50 million in support of more than 80 mental health and wellness programs. Program goals include sharing resources, identifying service needs and providing input to inform future planning of the PEI Three-Year Program and Expenditure plan.

I guess suicide prevention is a good thing but if someone really wants to stop the world so they can get off maybe oblige them. They do nothing to stop the drug addicts from killing themselves daily. They are all out there in the street and they will all die sooner rather than later. Maybe put them all in rehab and see who survives and who doesn’t. That’s suicide prevention.

.
Why is suicide a “bad” thing and frowned upon?
.
If someone wants to check out from life I think they should have that option.
.
THAT is liberty.

That reminds me of the right to die act assisted suicide for people with terminal illness like cancer should have the right to end their life.

What a completely ignorant statement.

.
Why?
.
So long as the person is legally able to exercise their rights, like voting in an election, they should be able to end their life.

Killing yourself is just like voting!

You COMPLETELY missed my point.

It’s the ability to exercise your rights… as those entitled by law and your right as a human being to control your own person.

We ran 911 calls for attempted suicides all the time. Many times it was for the same person we’ve seen in the past. If they’re gonna do it, they’re going to do it. There’s nothing you can do to talk them out of it. It is their life and they should be able to choose how they want to end it and win.

If we really want to help, we would provide a safe way to suicide. This would keep everyone else safe, as many people who suicide take others with them, whether on purpose or accidently. AND, it stops the waste of resources in keeping folks alive that do not want to be.

Why? Hypothetical, your son or daughter is having problems and says they are thinking of suicide you say ” it’s your right to end your life just like voting. ”
People only care if it effects them.
It’s truly sad what has happened to humanity.
Anyone who says they can’t end up in a similar situation needs to look around because it can.

I agree with you. I’ve known several women who experienced postpartum depression and were suicidal. The sudden drop in hormones after giving birth and the exhaustion of caring for a newborn can be overwhelming. If you haven’t seen it yourself you wouldn’t believe it could get that bad – but it can. Once they’re diagnosed and treated they are fine and recover completely. If someone disregarded their suffering and said, “sure it’s your right, do whatever you want”, it could result in a loss that would devastate an entire family. Yes, some people are very depressed and can’t be saved. But, I feel, we have to try.

SF OH, You have a valid point. Post-partum is real and devastating.

This is an interesting topic, especially in California where there is so much legislation about the “right to choose”. The right to choose abortion, the right to change gender, etc. etc. etc.
Dying is not negotiable. Some choose to go sooner than later, and we can only hope they are of sound mind when they make their choice. It’s not possible for legislation to stop someone who chooses to exit.

Exit 12A September 13, 2023 - 11:53 AM - 11:53 AM

… I’m sure State Senator Scott Wiener (D-SF) will come up with legislation to make suicide a crime punishable by confiscation of all assets by the State.

Worse.
He will go after the assets of the parents.
AB 957 is the beginning of such a process. In cases of LGBTQ suicide, the State of California will bring suit against parents for not properly providing gender affirmation. Sound crazy? No crazier than AB 957.
