Good Move, But Is It Tall Enough? Cape Cod & Clayton House Builds Concrete Wall Around Property

In an effort to stop vehicles from smashing into their home, the owners of the house on Cape Cod and Clayton Rd. in Concord built a concrete wall around their property.

Is it tall enough?

I want to know who paid for it?

That guy’s home insurance premiums have to be astronomical

I’m sure there is a city ordinance in height. It’s on a corner. So the city will have a say in how you protect your property.

Transparent concrete?

That does not look like a solid wall to me, it looks like there is fabric or a screen over it.
That wall wouldn’t stop a Smartcar.

Good Question!!
No!!, …don’t a test run!

…. if it’s reinforced it should be ok – unless it’s some huge semi!

You can’t block the line of sight on that corner, or else there would be a whole slew of different accidents.

Well right off the bat it’s an eyesore, it’s ugly and all it’s gonna do if a vehicle crashes into it, it will launch big chunks right into the house probably seriously injuring someone. Should have gone with a few 2 ton boulders to protect the house and look way better.
Good try but it’s a FAIL.

After the concrete cures it can be painted a more attractive color, to blend in with the property.
I would rather have my house hit with some chunks of concrete than a 3000 lb car

@Whatever
.
If the intersection is a four-way stop, fence/wall heights may be allowed to be taller than the typical 36 or 42 inches on a corner property.
.

If it were my property, I would have it decorated with some metal arrows or other metal decoration, even metal bars.
The speed limit on Clayton Rd, between Farm Bureau and Ygnacio Valley, should be reduced.

I’m more curious about if it’s thick enough to prevent a car from hitting the house. Keep in mind that we are shifting to electric cars which tend to be around 1000 pounds heavier than gas powered cars. I’m also curious about the cost to rebuild or repair this wall vs. the house. Finally, the homeowner is responsible for graffiti abatement but maybe that can be offset, as it’s a nice solid wall, to use the blank space as advertising for the funeral home that is across the street.

Nope

People routinely drive 55-60mph on Clayton Rd. I do 45 and am passed up for being too slow? The only thing that would remotely work there is one of those barrier walls they use on the freeways. Apply for a variance with the city.

ON DA – Jersey barriers on highways and freeway are designed to trap/capture vehicles that hit them while going more or less parallel to the wall. The goals are to prevent the vehicle from getting deflected back into traffic, to prevent them from going through or over the wall and head on into traffic on the other side, and to minimize damage to vehicles that hit them. They are not effective against head on ramming such as what happens at this corner.

This corner is a challenge due to the curb which deflect cars into the air. I would have hoped that the City of Concord would have been willing to build a wall or fence at the curb using anti-ram design standards. As it would have been a City of Concord barrier they could paint a white picket fence on it.

Yes, WC Resident there are no easy solutions here. Clayton Rd. used to be a 2-lane highway in both directions. A large wall would require a major footing. What I noticed now is that there may be a drainage issue when it rains. Across the street there is substantial fencing around the Church playgrounds. So, perhaps an MMA fighter cage or consult with the 3 little pigs and continue to build with bricks and not straw.

Not sure if that wall is permited being so close to the sidewalk. I hope there are no more accidents at that house, they have had enough.

A wall or fence may be allowed to abut the sidewalk. It all depends on the right-of-way line and/or utility easement, if present, along the frontage.
.
Typically, the front property line may be up to 10 feet BEHIND the sidewalk in some neighborhoods.
.
Depends.
.
Btw, I have a civil engineering background and worked on dozens and dozens of residential subdivisions.
.

What else do they have behind it to reinforce it as a real barrier?

Put “Canterbury Village” on it

The wall is OK but I’d add some explosive reactive armor.

More of a question like, “why are we talking about someone’s home?” Kinda shady Claycpord, smh

The rules of Concord do not include you being safe, they are worried about a fence more than 3 feet tall, and the city rep could not think of a reason why,she said she thinks they want you to put trees there, with no height restrictions, ridiculously.

I am sure I would be putting those huge rocks behind the wall as a second barrier. Just saying

Unless that wall is reinforced with solid steel beams, that’s not gonna stop anything. I have a car going fast will plow right through it.

That property and Galindo/Concord Blvd are cursed. BTW, how long is G/CB going to remain empty? How many years has it been….more than 10 already?

Well boys and girls, it’s time for me to edgamacate ya’ll. Years ago a trucker tried to blast his way into our glorious State Capitol building in Sacramento. In response, us generous taxpayers built a security perimeter around the building because, God forbid, anything should happen to our one-party Marxist masters.

Anyway, one of the things that was done was concrete planter boxes were built. They were about 3′-4′ wide and back-filled with soil and then plants. However, the key thing is that there were hidden interior transverse concrete walls connecting the front planter wall facing the street with the back planter wall. No truck was going to get through that and that what is really needed here. Also, some 6″ dia. steel bollards filled with concrete wouldn’t hurt either. I would put in some screen planting just to help block the headlights and traffic noise!

Unfortunately, I was not called in as a consultant. However, it could still be done. If it was my home and family at stake, I would consider it. You might even get the insurance company to pay for it!

I live around the corner, I watched them build it. It’s steel reinforce. It may not stop a speeding car but it will slow it down and probably kill the driver.

I wish the best of luck for the family that this idiot crashed into in the middle of the night. He was probably drunk or on drugs. Almost hit the sleeping Grandma and displaced the family for months. The jerk that hit the house should have his name and address made public. Did he have any consequences? I hope this family hired a good lawyer.
