I got busted for putting a 49cc engine on a bike because I didn’t register it as a moped and didn’t have an M1 license to operate the moped. If there is a law for moped, there should be a law for ebike as well.

I got arrested for DUI while riding a vintage style minibike after having some beers at a friend’s house. Luckily the DA never pressed charges (I blew a 0.088). Still cost me $5,000 just for my lawyer. This was close to 20 years ago that happened.
Not real proud of it, but I do think it’s a funny way to get popped for DUI.

anything over 20mph on it’s own is a motor vehicle. Now you can pedal with assist faster but motor only cannot exceed 20. totally sucks.

I had a 49cc Motobecane Moped in college. Back then the law was 35 mph for top speed as I recall. On summer break I ported the cylinder head, gasket matched the exhaust, installed a larger carb, and here’s the fun part, installed an NOS fogger nozzle activated with a nine volt battery. I was pulled over clocked at 49 MPH. No ticket, but he insisted on an explanation of the modifications.
Some of those E -bikes seem quite fast. so I suppose some limits make sense.

I was wondering about this subject the other day.
When I was riding mini bikes on the street, back when, the police could, would give you a ticket for no license on the vehicle and you.
Now days there are all kinds of motorized “things” running around on streets and sidewalks. Scooters, skateboards, bikes, one wheel gizmos, etc.

Toddler Sidewalk Peddle cars that we had when we were kids were fun …. now they’re electric…. little mini corvette zooming down the middle of my street a few days ago– into the cross street to make u-turn…Kid may have been 5- at most. I cringed just watching. I think I’m in favor of some sort of age restrictions, and proof of safety skills.

California adopted new laws for legal eBikes in 2015, breaking the bikes down into three classes. The classifications are primarily based on where they are allowed to operate.
AB 1096: Electric Bicycles
This is the law that defines electric bicycles as those with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. It also creates three classes of electric bicycles based on their motor speed and level of electric assist. Electric bikes subsequently fell into classes 1, 2, and 3.
Important note! CA State AB1096 established a default framework – where a local jurisdiction (city, county, etc.) had not put any form of ordinance in place for electric bikes. A local jurisdiction (city, county, etc.) may enact an ordinance to allow or restrict electric bike usage for their area that may differ from the State default.

I knew it! … a couple years ago I said just give Newscum time and he’ll find a way to over lib ebikes.. they’ll be required training, a written test, a ride test, periodic retesting, insurance requirements, brake lights, mirrors, horns or bells are already required in some areas…. that’s Cali for ya… ,,,,sad what this state has become

I’ve seen hundreds of e-bike riders and not one had been irresponsible. Regulation of e-bikes is nothing more than a power grab, plain and simple. The reality is there is absolutely NO NEED for this.

The same can be said for people driving cars. It used to be you’d always see CHP patrolling the highways, often pulling some yahoo over for speeding or driving recklessly. I can’t recall the last time I saw a CHP, except when there’s been a bad accident.

The other week, I passed a middle-aged man riding his bike over two feet into the car lane, there was a bike lane, but he was not using it. I went over the yellow stripe to pass him and he still flipped me off. I guess he wanted all car to just follow along behind him.

Unless you can state the number of state laws that currently exist in California then you shouldn’t be introducing more laws. How about you spend some time introducing legislation to repeal some laws that are redundant, unnecessary, out of date, or that we just don’t need and don’t want. We don’t always need more laws, more laws, more laws!!! Remember, this is supposed to be “the land of the free,” well let us be free, let us live free, and let us make free decisions for our lives.

People like you are always supporting and passing laws that make it more difficult for people to travel by car, especially gas powered cars, and now that people are using alternative transportation you want to make that more difficult too, making it virtually impossible for families to travel by e-bike, as the above news story shows. You’re only going to push more people back into cars, great job!
