I don’t know, and honestly….don’t care. I don’t want more houses, or whatever they call them now. They look like townhomes so smashed together. Hell, if I lived in one of those my neighbors would know if i had Chili for dinner!
There is a shortage of affordable housing. Not everyone wants a “monster home” but construction companies build them for the extra profit.

California doesn’t have a housing shortage, California has on overpopulation of illegal invaders taking up too much space at the taxpayers expense.
The new showed that a 15 story office building there was new in San Francisco and worth 65 million just sold for 6.5 million. I thought to myself why couldn’t that be converted to apartment living or studios? There’s something going on in this Biden economy, because office buildings and hotels are being turned back to the banks in record numbers.
I also find it interesting that while California supposidly has a housing shortage, along with water and energy shortage, that we are allowing mllions of illegals aliens to flood in. How’s that all going to work out?

I have mentioned this before, I personally know a LOT of people who own unused property. Sometimes it is inherited and they just don’t get around to living in it or selling it. Others own a few rentals near colleges and love that the students will live anywhere and share the monthly rent. And (the property owner) doesn’t have to make repairs and hasn’t made upgrades in over twenty to thirty years.
So, no, there is no housing shortage. Just housing hoarders.

No! … there is a glut of housing in the high rise high density downtown WC … hundreds are vacant and they can’t sell …. many / most? have been vacant since they’ve been built and more are being planned right now – around the old DMV office area and on the corner of YVR And Civic.

There is a shortage of people willing to work, sacrifice and save to afford house. A growing segment of our population thinks if they sit around and whine they will receive government funding. Unfortunately it seems to work

Supply and demand is the basic law of markets. When demand exceeds supply, prices are pushed up. When supply is greater than demand, prices go down. New homes in Texas are much less expensive than similar homes in California, and it’s not because people are fleeing Texas to move to California. Of course there are many factors that affect housing prices, but none are as important as supply and demand.

I don’t get the shortage, I read an article 3 weeks ago that apartment rentals vacancies exceeded 2020 levels. I also read 2 of the newer big projects in WC filled for bankruptcy.
In Concord we all know the Bart project failed because the developer said it didn’t, pan out. That was before rates went up.
If you want cheaper units cities have to stop requiring 100% union labor, you can’t have it both ways.
I’d like to live in Beverly Hills but I can’t afford it. I guess there is a shortage. Not sure if it’s housing or just my bank account. There’s plenty of places to live. People want what they can’t afford. “housing shortage” is a propaganda term for hyperinflation.
The housing shortage ruse is a brilliant scheme by the left, forcing compact voting blocks in urban areas. In 2020, Brandon won only 16.9% of all counties within the the United States. Rezoning single family neighborhoods to allow ADU’s and allowing developers to purchase former single family zoned lots to build multi family units is a democrat/socialist dream come true. Couple that with open border policies and a milk toast administration, we no longer have a sovereign nation.
How is curtailing government restrictions on property owners’ rights to use of THIER OWN LAND more profitably “socialist?”
Aren’t laws protecting private property rights from government interference the opposite of “socialism?”
This SFGate article made me think about the “housing shortage.” Apparently 20% of the housing in Palm Springs area is unavailable as it’s being used as Airbnb short term rentals. I know that in the Tahoe and Truckee area that it’s next to impossible for the people that work in local restaurants, shops, ski resorts, etc. to find affordable housing as it’s all tied up in short term rentals. The only available housing seems to be run-down dumps.

There are over 46,000 vacant homes in the Bay Area held mostly by Hedge Funds and real estate investors. I would not consider that a shortage.
