Sailing on the San Francisco Bay. I found a great club, Tradewinds, in Richmond. For a monthly fee I can sail as often as I want. The fee is less than slip rental for a boat and I don’t have the other upkeep costs that go with boat ownership.
Nothing better than a dose of vitamin sea.

I use to hike and walk a lot. When I lived in Benicia I would walk at Benicia State Park about 4 to 5 times a week, often all the way out to the end, and up in the hills, where you have a great view of the Carquinez Bridge. However, as I’m getting older I mostly exercise at home, I cannot walk when it is hot, and I have knee problem, it hasn’t bothered me for 5 years, (I got a cortisone shot) but is acting up again. So in my free time, when I’m not doing something with friends, I listen to music (everything from jazz, big band, rock and roll, folk, classical and even a little country) read, and watch movies either on Utube or one of the many dvd’s I have. Also use to knit, mostly scarves, but not so much anymore, I have more scarves than I know what to do with.

We have a lot in common, Hanne. I try to protect my knees by keeping my weight down and not carrying anything heavy, which is what I did to wreck one the last time. The cortisone shot worked again. I also used to take art lessons but stopped when I had more paintings than I knew what to do with. Keep exercising! I do a lot of stretching when I wake up and that helps me to stay strong and flexible.

.
Everything is “extracurricular” since I graduated from college a long time ago.
.
But if you mean “outside the normal routine”, then Id have to say my interests and activities are varied so far and wide such that there is no normal routine. Everyday of every year brings on something new! Lately, it’s restoring a 1986 Kawasaki Ninja.

With all the yardwork I do on our 1/3-acre lot, … I like to provide an environment for the birds, praying mantis, lizards, and beside honeybees and have been learning about leafcutter bees, …they are amazing! One day I’ll jump back into my artwork 🙂

I love reading. Something people forgot how to do these days. No one knows what books are anymore but i love reading them on the weekends with a cup of coffee.

ConcordRez July 28, 2023 - 4:37 PM - 4:37 PM

Glad to share that LOTS of people read books. Here are several examples. YV Library has two book clubs. Clayton Library has a book club. PH library has several book clubs. The Walnut Country/Crossings neighborhood has a book club. Those who attend classes through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSUEB, Concord read books. The monthly book events at Lafayette Library are always full. The author events at Downtown WC Library are always full. Book events at Rakestraw in Danville and Orinda Books in Orinda are always full. All of my friends read. Some of us volunteer at libraries so know lots of readers. I know the used bookstores run by volunteers for Lafayette, WC, and PH Libraries have many customers.

Woodworking. I just got my 13″ planer from Grizzly yesterday. I opted for the 3 straight knives, but the helical cutterhead option was extremely tempting. Huge sale!!!

I love the long days of summer! I enjoy going to the pool when I get off work. I also enjoy the live music shows at Todos Santos, the Grove in Clayton and The Lakes in Pleasant Hill. I also like to catch up on reading during the summer when my backyard deck chair invites me to sit in the shade and get lost in a story.

One of my favorites was riding my HD, didn’t need any reason to ride and I went everywhere, I call it “Wind Therapy”. Unfortunately I only take it out a couple of times a year to ride the River Road and back home. Too many stupid and ignorant drivers on the roads now. I used to bust knuckles on my vintage vehicles but my body lets me know I need to find a honest mechanic now days.

ConcordRez July 28, 2023 - 4:48 PM - 4:48 PM

There are so many. Besides family and books, my favorite activities include the free concerts in Concord and Clayton; classes and lectures through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSUEB, Concord; the 100+ plays I see a year; movies through Mountain Shadow Film Society; international travel; lectures at Commonwealth Club and Humanities West; symphony, ballet, and opera; library and book store events; and my memberships at SFMOMA, the DeYoung, Legion of Honor, and the Asian Art Museum.
