City Of Concord Rules Require Permit For Removal Of Certain Trees

Did You Know….there are City of Concord ordinances that require a permit for certain private trees to be removed?

The City’s Urban Forest consists of street, park, public, open space, and private trees. All of these trees contribute to the vast social, economic, and environmental benefits that an Urban Forest provides to a Community. To preserve and grow this valuable asset, the City of Concord protects certain trees that are on private property.

The City also sets planting and maintenance requirements for all trees that are within the right-of-way. There is specific criteria that determine which private trees are and aren’t protected. The requirements for tree preservation and criteria to be eligible for a Private Tree Removal Permit are codified in the Concord Municipal Code Sections 8.25 Neighborhood Preservation, 8.40 Trees and Shrubs, 17.20 Subdivision Design and Improvements, and 18.310 Tree Preservation And Protection.

Before removing any tree from your property, please check the Public Works Trees web page or call 925-671-3107 to verify whether or not a Private Tree Removal Permit is required.

Answers that question where, “If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it makes a sound.”
The answer is yes, per the Concord Municipal , sections 8.25, 8.40, and 17.20 in the design handbook.

Not sure if it’s still the case, but it used to be the cost of a permit was more than the cost of the fine. Do with that information what you will….

I had a neighbor many years ago who took down a problematic pine in his backyard with a couple buddies. Code enforcement showed up two days after the fact, and the fine was well under $1,000 less than permits and a pro tree service.

Now he’d probably be charged with a felony.

Hire a couple of guys from in front of Home Depot and the tree will be history by sun up.

No permits, no inspection, and no fees.

So what I hear is, if I want to remove a tree the city deems “protected,” I should poison and kill it first. Thanks for the heads up!

Camping: legal. Panhandling: legal. Jaywalking: legal.

Cutting down a tree on your own property: illegal.

How about you cut it down, and tell Becton I needed it. It works for looters.

Doh July 13, 2023 - 10:37 AM - 10:37 AM

It is a shame the web site does not state which trees are protected or not. One is expected to fill out the form first and then learn if the form is required or not.
