AFTER

Nation’s on Clayton Rd. in Concord has reopened following a major remodel.

The building was completely gutted back in late-February of this year, and just four months later, they’re open for business.

Dutch Bros. down the street should hire the construction crew from Nation’s.

But do they still serve overcooked burgers with slabs of mayo?

@BOB….No mayo at Nations, “salad dressing”…aka Miracle Whip.

Kraft dressing base not miracle whip. I promise it doesn’t have that tang of miracle whip. Just like mayo but a little sweeter. But they do ha e mayo by request

Cowellian June 30, 2023 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

I used to enjoy Nation’s, but it’s been many years since I’ve been there. My memory is that the burgers came undecorated, but they had an extensive condiment bar where we could add lettuce, tomato, onions, and a wide variety of condiments including mayo and Miracle Whip. That was important because my wife likes mayo, while I prefer Miracle Whip.

You’re thinking of Fuddrucker’s, with the large condiment bar.

Cowellian July 2, 2023 - 1:22 PM - 1:22 PM

Fuddrucker’s definitely had the biggest and best condiment bar, but I do remember decorating my Nation’s Burgers.

S July 2, 2023 - 2:02 PM - 2:02 PM

yep
Nations use to set out ‘mater, onions, relish (is what I remember) along side the mustard, catsup, & such….

Juryisout June 30, 2023 - 9:13 PM - 9:13 PM

Other places nearby where you can park your car safely, not next to hotel homeless.

I preferred the old diner look/design compared to the new look/design. The new look/design has better signage, fresh paint, and reminds me of a barn compared to the old diner look/design, but nothing about this new design says “hamburgers” 🍔 🍔 🍔 🍔 🍔 🍔 to me.

@The Black Knight
I prefer the old look also. I loved those old wavy glass windows in front.

@old timer. Have you ever had a positive thought in your old life? Any time I’ve been there the hard working staff seemed just fine

Think I’m in the mood for PIE!, …. Berry Pie

Oh, … Tried a pie from Ace Hardware, from the frozen case, $19.99.
Strawberry/Rhubarb, …. Hubby liked it.
Going with Peach for myself next time.

Yeah….I go to Ace Hardware for my pie.

I can see myself thinking, ” Okay, I got that 3/8″ hobbknober, that 13/64ths spiral fluted left-handed jimmyshank spike remover, and that can of super elastic bubble plastic the wife needed, a couple of rat traps…now, where’s that fresh pie at?” Oh yeah, right next to the turpentine display!”

Out-N-About July 1, 2023 - 1:52 PM - 1:52 PM

The pies used to only be available to the East Bay at Dwelley Family Farms produce stand in Oakely. An ACE rep with a vision worked hard to get them in to ACE stores in the East Bay.

THE BLACK KNIGHT June 30, 2023 - 6:32 PM - 6:32 PM

ROZ,
.
I found the berry pie to be good and the peach pie to be really good. 🥧 🥧 🥧

@Roz
A couple of years ago, I bought two frozen pies for a fundraising thing. A few days ago, I saw pies in the case along the checkout at ACE and they look to be exactly what I bought from the fundraiser. After you try the Peach, you and “The Black Knight” should try the Apple Dutch Crunch. It was fantastic.

Went there many times over the years and unfortunately they always messed up my order. Once even got my cheeseburger with no burger at all on it, which i didnt find out until we got home. Was not a good dinner. Boycotted them for years.

Hope they increased their quality control, maybe ill try it again someday if i wanna pay $15 for a burger.

CHEESEBURGER
CHEESEBURGER

$9.10

A 1/3 lb. all beef patty served on a toasted bun with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, dressing and a touch of mustard for flavor. Comes with two thick slices of melted cheese…

What do you buy with the other $6 ???

Juryisout July 1, 2023 - 12:06 PM - 12:06 PM

The $6 leftover is your med drink.

That is pretty speedy. Good for Nations.
Not to hijack the thread, but B of A at Oak Grove and Ygnacio closed over a year ago. The new one at Oak Grove and Shadelands just opened. No ATMs outside, so I expected several inside with perhaps a greeter and couple of tellers etc. Nope.
Three ATMs inside, two of which were out of order. Greeter? None. Tellers at the counter? None. Finance guys lounging in their offices sans clients? Two. If the doors hadn’t been unlocked and the lights on, I would assume they were closed.
Nations Burgers look more like a bank than B of A. Install an ATM and I’ll pick up a Berry Pie every time!

Nations thread. Not a Bank of America thread.

But a few years ago, Nations Bank bought Bank of America, and then became Bank of America. And if Ace Hardware is now selling pies, who knows what happens next?

I hadn’t been there in many years. But hey, they have given a new costly push into Concord so I’ll give them a try again. Hope they succeed.

Juryisout July 1, 2023 - 11:33 AM - 11:33 AM

I’ve done without a Nations burger for 20 years, no need to go back quite a few better burger places around plus the parking there at Nations absolutely sucks. You can always park in the homeless motel next door and have the interior of your car cleaned out…

10
AJ July 1, 2023 - 8:04 AM - 8:04 AM

I dig it. Very modern. Sure I miss the awning look, but the old style didn’t look terribly special. I hopefully the food remains reliable, it’s Nations: the best food you’ll find after midnight most anywhere.

Looking forward to making bad decisions soon.

We need a Doggie Diner.

Now you’re talking! Their hot pastrami was terrific.
And remember Clown Alley at Columbus and Montgomery in SF?

My favorite burger place. I am in like Flynn.

Bruce D. July 2, 2023 - 7:59 AM - 7:59 AM

Good food. Hard-working, dedicated staff. Fair prices. Big burgers with lots of produce. I didn’t know I could request mayo substitution. They have the best breakfast sausage of any restaurant I’ve tried. Generous portions. Dangerously delicious pies. Good coffee. Nice dining room with flowers on the tables. Been going there for 30 years and never had a problem parking my car safely. Being an “old guy”, I do prefer the earlier “diner” building design. All the best going forward.

Cyn July 2, 2023 - 1:09 PM - 1:09 PM

@Bruce D.
Nice post.

JustMe July 2, 2023 - 9:05 AM - 9:05 AM

I’m glad they’re back open– although they were still technically working on the building into July. It’s still an incredibly fast remodel and it looks fantastic. I’m for anyone who updates their dated and tired looking buildings. This is a GOOD thing for the area. Also hope they updated the kitchen for the staff working there.

I happened to go there just a day before they closed for the remodel. The employees were extremely nice, and i felt bad for them losing work. Hopefully they’ll get back into the swing of things. Have always like their pies. Their burgers are good as is their breakfast. Will definitely have to venture back there.

Steve H July 6, 2023 - 8:29 AM - 8:29 AM

Nations is my favorite, but I usually go to the one on Contra Costa Blvd…

I wonder if the cellular service is better there now, kind of doubt it. Not really related to the building itself, but I do like to use my social media apps when eating, and the cell service in that building was non-existent before. Likely that part of town I suspect and still a problem but will check it out. I use AT&T’s cell service.
