The mascot of Concord High School will remain the “Minutemen” after a school board resolution failed to pass on Wednesday night to change the mascot to the “Bears.”
The school had several concerns about the “Minutemen” name and logo, including “gender specificity, showcasing of a firearm, gun violence, and lack of equal representation to create a safe, welcoming environment,” according to the school district.
The proposed change would have cost the district at least $200,000.
The vote was 2-2, with one member absent.
Here’s how the board voted.
Keisha Nzewi – YES
Linda Mayo – NO
Debra Mason – NO
Erin McFerrin – YES
Other names under consideration before the Bears name was chosen were the Chargers and Crocodiles.
Sanity prevails. Now let’s celebrate with a Drag Queen show!
There is nothing more Destructive to your society and your civil liberties than self-hating, leftist suburban women.
Take that and shove it where the sun don’t shine. This was a stupid idea to begin with.Enough of trying to be a dictator ship.I hope this is the beginning of the people taking back this country.
Better than our military changing the name of army bases. Wiping out the countries history.
Taliban is big on destroying statues and historic places.
woke and DEMs, America’s version of the taliban
Keisha Nzewi – YES
Erin McFerrin – YES
These two NEED TO BE VOTED OUT AS SOON AS THEIR TERM ENDS NEXT YEAR!!!
100% correct.
Give these commies the boot.
The sooner the better.
Keisha is the worst piece of nasty garbage. She is mean, racist, AND stupid, which is a dangerous combination.
The pushback against DEMOCRAT WOKENESS has begun!!!!
Thank you from a member of the Class of 1970 aka first freshman class. I was and am proud to be the MINUTEMEN!
And proud you should be! Men in uniforms, with guns and a desire to be free of tyranny built, faught, died and then claimed independence for this country. A country, by the way, that lets even the whining waggers have equal say in how she’s managed.
How do they, (the woke crowd) think their freedoms were won? Proud to be a minuteman alumni. Class of 71.
It’s not high school without instigators, teacher manipulation and drama queens.
Pioneers would have been good.
Now you know who to vote off the Board next election.
Amen to that!
Fantastic! glad to see there are still some sensible people out there. Linda, Debra…THANK YOU!
YES!!!
Great!
Tough being a Minute Man but still proud.
Enjoyed life as a Westwood Wolverine too!!
Westwood wolverine?
Westwood Elementary— across the street.
@BWIZZLE….In the late 60s the El Dorado mascot was the “Conquistador”, Mr. Kilgore used to dress up as one. There’s also a bull on the yearbooks covers, so I don’t know what the official mascot was.
Why are there so many public officials that aren’t proud of their country anymore? In 1976, Americans were coming together and celebrating the bicentennial. There were parades, and firework displays. People were displaying Old Glory on their homes and their vehicles, and showed pride in their country. I was living in Dublin at the time, and all the fire hydrants in the city were painted to look like minutemen. Now days, some lame brain wuss finds if offensive. The same lame brain wuss that so many brave men and women fought in wars to defend and preserve the liberty, that gives them the right to be a lame brain wuss. I don’t know, maybe they are all descendants of Benedict Arnold or something. I can’t figure it out.
DAWG,
Maybe the fall of America has been coming for a long time, but it seemed to gather momentum following the 2009 presidential election, through 2016.
We had a brief 4 year lull when things improved from 2017 to 2020. There was prosperity, and pride in being American again.
Since then life’s gotten exponentially more difficult. I suspect it may be the “leadership.”
Why did the Turks change Constantinople to Istanbul? Because they conquered it.
I rolled my eyes at the right wingers warning of Marxists and commies when I was younger. But that is exactly what this is. In order to bring in their neo-communist utopia, they have to wipe away the Olds. Tearing down statues, renaming institutions, flying the new flag at the Whitehouse are potent symbols of their success in that war. They hate patriotic America, it stands in the way of their revolution. That’s why they call everything traditionally American racist. They don’t believe that any more than you do, but racist, white supremacist, those are all good rhetorical weapons to attack the institutions that stand in their way.
The average person supporting this stuff doesn’t think that way, they are just fooled by the liberation rhetoric around it. But the thought leaders that foment this, absolutely do.
It’s the ‘blame, it’s always someone else’s fault & lack of responsibility for self’ members of society. They are also the ones that embrace victimhood as a career. Nowadays they are coddled by the Democrat government and glorified by the corrupt liberal news media.
It’s sad that CHS is not teaching the kids the history of the Minutemen so they have pride in their mascot. Instead you have teachers teaching the kids to associate it with the ‘militias’ of today and insinuating it is something we should distance ourselves from. Absolutely shameful! How dare they manipulate these young minds to a false narrative!
Excellent post🔝
Where did you hear that? I used to teach there and not once did I ever hear a teacher complaining about the mascot. Teachers have better things to do in class than discuss the mascot, anyway.
My kids are CHS graduates and they had no issues with it either. They were proud Minutemen, including my girls!
This stuff comes down from activist administrators. They train in woke Marxist CRT/DEI/ESG/intersectionality etc in college, then they move to places of authority where they can impose their ideology one move at a time. They use accusations of racism, colonialism, misogyny, Islamophobia, homophobia etc to guilt and strong arm people into going along. They use cancel mobs to intimidate anyone who pushes back. They sneak in their ideology into the curriculum through “praxis,” like wording a math word problem around race differences, and then having a “conversation” about how the US is racist and needs “fundamental change,” as Obama said.
It’s a cancer and anyone that pushes this crap should be ejected from polite society. It’s exactly what they plan for traditional patriots when they get the power. See Nigel Farage in the UK being de-banked.
Push back now, or pay the price later.
🎯
@TeacherMom Unfortunately it’s clearly not the same environment as when you were teaching there. I wish we had more of you!
My sons graduated in 2007 and 2011. I loved CHS! I was on the Athletic Booster Board for 6 of those 8 years. I loved the teachers and the administrators. We had a small town feel then. All the families pitched in. It was a great time.
I do have hope though. Julene MacKinnon is back and she’s already done so much for the school. She and I may not see eye to eye on the mascot issue but we never let it affect our friendship. She’s wonderful! I adore her!
As far as the teacher comparing our Minutemen to today’s militia, that came from the CHS teacher who was leading the change. She said that in the first meeting I attended in 2022.
Very glad to hear of it! It gives me hope that there’s some sanity left! But when you look at the vote it was a tie, meaning half are still want to destroy history.
That half will Be Voted Out next term!
Great! Common sense prevailed! 👍😎
If the school board worked as hard on student curriculum and teaching students reading, writing, and arithmetic, perhaps the students would be better prepared for the world once they graduate.
The School Board has been a tasteless joke for decades and I believe the district needs to be dissolved and several new districts created that can follow the needs of the parents,
The corrupt and planted board we have now certainly does not meet the wishes of the parents.
Go look for a private school right now, they are full.
The parents of the MDUSD have lost confidence in the School Board and their plant.
In large part due to Mark Lloyd, a proud Minuteman. Well done Mark!
And his daughters Comment during one of the meetings. VERY well spoken
Glad to see that our school mascot hadn’t changed. I’m an 1985 graduate and a proud minuteman . Everyone needs to stop with changing everything, there’s a reason why the names are picked for schools, football teams and our history and our statues.Stop trying to change our history!!! Thick is so wrong
Now let’s change back YVHS! Warriors back, the hell with woke/cancel culture.
Now we got rid of affirmative action for college admissions, let’s get rid of it everywhere!
The tide is turning, you Yonkers pushed too far. Time to get America back the way it was.
GOOD!!!
Now no more queer proms and a return to morality and decency.
Vote the ones that wanted to change the name out. Seems like no respect for the people who were willing to fight for the freedoms we enjoy. My god it has a picture of a gun. Half the shows on tv have guns on tv in them. Guns aren’t the problem , parents that don’t discipline there kids are the problem.
That reminds me! Here at Claycord.com, many voted to change the logo, it was changed for a bit but then it went back to being the same logo we have had for several years now. What’s the story behind not changing the logo?
I like the logo we have now instead of that stupid Hawk.
This former CHS Minuteman (class of ’81) approves this decision! I thought for sure the change was a done deal. It is rather disheartening that so many of our youth have been so indoctrinated into the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion B.S. that a “man” with a “gun” is all they can see. I hope this will present an opportunity to teach them about some of our country’s history, or at least have a thoughtful conversation about why the motion was denied.
I always thought it was a funny name and everyone is just pronouncing it wrong.
I was a history major in college–die hard lib here and here is one of the best quotes from my favorite Professor Clavin (without permission):
“Cliff: Oh, they were actually called the Minute Men. A lot of them under three feet tall, as a matter of fact.
Norm: Right.
Cliff: Way back in history, people were shorter.”
Know your history.
@OG
……and Frasier asked Cliff: “What color is the sky in your world?”
Was it denied due of the fiscal costs or some other political driven agenda?
The “politically driven agenda” was to change the mascot name on the basis of not offending those who have no knowledge of why it was chosen in the first place.
Kiesha and Erin need to be canned, that they would support this insulting waste of taxpayer money shows their utter lack of ability to govern.
Board tied when voted on so it did not pass.
That half will Be Voted Out next term!
Fabulous. Leave the mascot alone. Anyone ever seen a crocodile in Convord? Exactly!!
Yay! I was in the Class of ‘69 and got to vote on our Minuteman mascot and school colors. It was such a great choice with a historical connection. I was at the School Board meeting to support keeping our school mascot and heard the CHS Principal, students, and School Board members who supported the change. Their reasons did not make sense for a lot of reasons, including the $200,000 it would cost to change it! I’m so glad two of the Board members had common sense to vote against the change! This whole school name change was a waste of time, but at least in the end the Minutemen prevailed!
I’m glad this mascot change didn’t happen.
.
Shouldn’t those that are outraged by the Concord High School Minutemen mascot be just as outraged by the Mt. Diablo High School Red Devils mascot? Or is it just “offensive” that the Minutemen are both “portrayed as men” and contains the word “men” and has a “gun,” while the Red Devil has historically been “portrayed as a male” with a “pitchfork”?
When Gregory Gardens Elementary School (Pleasant Hill) reopened after being closed for many years, the children were allowed to vote for a mascot. They voted for the Gregory Gardens Bandits (insert picture of cartoon raccoon here).
However, after the vote results were published, certain pearl-clutchers buttonholed the principal and talked him into going with the Gregory Gardens Gators, because they said that the word “Bandits” sent a negative message.
The children learned a valuable lesson about democracy that day – the lesson was that their vote was meaningless in the face of special interests.
I hope the Minutemen will remain as the Concord High mascot.
Take a look at MDUSD Area 3 Boardmember Keisha Nzewi’s website.

Black Knight; We try to do the right thing. We admit to our faults and failures. We stand on the line and pray we’re taking our best step forward in advancing our Republic. … and then we go right ahead and shoot ourselves in the foot, again, and again, and…..
What you should do is watch her in the board meeting. Specifically the May 10th and June 28th meeting. She’s a bully. There’s no democracy in her. If you don’t agree with her, she attacks. She is harsh, disrespectful, and unkind. The opposite of inclusion. If you watch her in all of the board meetings, you’ll notice that she never turns to look at the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance, nor does she put her hand on her heart. That’s very telling to me.
It’s probably difficult to put your hand on your heart when you have your head up your…………
She is a steaming pile of you know what. No respect for anyone. She is an entitled professional victim, bent on dictating her way to everyone else.
Very cool related story … couple years back .. when I was living in Saigon … hot day … sat down for a ice tea break next to an old Viet man selling used watches, and rings and other little collectables. I took a look just for the hellofit … pow!!! … found 1950s Concord HS class ring with baseball engraving … bought it … wanted to find the family and retun it … prolly a veteran who died or maybe pawned it back during the American war … long story short … somebody stole it when I was out singing in Da Lat … #sigh
wonder which state that 1950’s CHS ring was from?
this CHS wasn’t around til mid 60’s.
.
neat story though…
😁🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@S…There’s 7 or 8 high schools in the US named Concord High, according to Google. Class of ’72 here, Concord,CA.
I checked on Google, and it looks like there are 31 places named Concord in the US. Concord High School in Concord, North Carolina had baseball engraving.
Thanks … I think it was 1951 … looks like NOT Concord CA … but still would think the same … return to the family for a bit of closure.
good! I’m glad they’re staying the Minutemen. People need to stop being so sensitive and bringing politics into literally EVERYTHING. It’s exhausting.
For the two individuals that voted to change the name. Here is the history behind it:”Minutemen were a small hand-picked elite force which were required to be highly mobile and able to assemble quickly. Minutemen were selected from militia muster rolls by their commanding officers. Typically 25 years of age or younger, they were chosen for their enthusiasm, reliability, and physical strength.” Class of 83 and proud to be a member of the Minutemen
I suspect the $200000 estimate was grossly mistaken. Logos for thr football field and gym, all new uniforms for freshmen, JV, and varsity for at least a dozen sports, oh and new letterhead to announce the new mascot. What a waste of resources and time. Happy this is over.
To top it off there was talk about auctioning off the MM memorabilia and calls made for donations to change the uniforms. All done before any approval of a mascot change was made. Absolutely inappropriate! I guess they were hoping that started erasing the MM, it’d have to be changed.
They want to humiliate you, diminish your history, erase you from existence. Don’t let them.
Just one more thing about MDUSD. why are all the AC units on during no school for summer. as I saw tonight all the units were on every building at our elementary school. I’m sure glad our tax money is paying the bill for all this. I will post again.

Thank goodness sanity wins here.
I graduated from Concord High and understand the name is not about gender/race/religion, rather about the overall understanding that its name is derived from a time when at a moments notice, people rose up and left their homes to defend our nation – The US – The same one that gives everyone these rights to change it to a silly name like the “Bears”.
How is it by the way we put the history of this Highschool in charge of a random group of 5 people (one of which thankfully didn’t show up or this could have lost). Can I please get on this board moving forward? Do all these people live in Concord or attended Concord High?
DH,
.
No, none of the MDUSD Boardmembers attend Concord High School.
.
The borders of the Mount Diablo Unified School District exceed the borders of the City of Concord, it also includes the City of Clayton, a majority of the City of Pleasant Hill, portions of the City of Lafayette, City of Martinez, City of Pittsburg, and the City of Walnut Creek, it also includes a portion or all of the populated and unpopulated Contra Costa County unincorporated areas/communities of Avon, Ayers Ranch, Bay Point (formerly Bella Vista, and formerly West Pittsburg, and including McAvoy), Clyde, Contra Costa Centre (formerly Las Juntas, and formerly Sparkle, and formerly Waldon), Maltby, Monsanto, MOTCO/Nichols, MOTCO/Port Chicago (formerly Bay Point), Northgate, Pacheco, Reliez Valley, Shell Ridge, and Vine Hill.
.
What MDUSD Governing Board/Trustee District/Area do you live in?
.
I believe MDUSD Governing Boardmember/Trustee Area/District 3 Keisha Nzewi lives in Pleasant Hill, and MDUSD Governing Boardmember/Trustee Area/District 5 Erin McFerrin lives in Concord. They’re both up for reelection in 2024, should they choose to run again.
Oh look McFerrin and Nzewi voted for the whole agenda item. They probably wanted to sneak Bear in while it was still June to call it part of pride. Surprised they wanted to use an animal known for caring for its children when they are so vehemently opposed to the well-being of ours.
For decades YVHS had Warriors as thier mascot,,and it was a drawing of an Amercian Indian warrior.
Nothing racial,just part of history.
The liberals came along and made them remove the drawing about 10 years ago,as it “mite be offensive”
Yet it is the name of the football team that was undefeated when i went their, and everyone was proud to be a warrior.
Liberals are self made victims, just out of boredom it seems, they need to be drama queens.
Apparently those who voted for the change are incapable of focusing on education – but see this as an opportunity to “make their mark” in the name of DEI.
Time to vote those morons out… or recall them!
Take your woke bull$hit elsewhere.
Thank you Linda and Debra! I admire you for bravely standing your ground against the President of the Board’s bullying tactic. There’s no democracy in her. If you don’t agree with her, she attacks. She is harsh, disrespectful, and unkind. The opposite of inclusion.
This is someone who never turns to look at the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance, nor does she place her hand on her heart. Very telling!
The two that voted to change the name need to be voted out next election. Stop trying to change history!
Nah they won’t be voted out. They already survived re-election and were appointed higher positions on the board. They have the back of the unions so they have all the money.
Mass Psychosis is Mainstream Medias only job.
Demoncrats hate Americs, God, Police, Veterans, history, traditions…THEY ONLY KNOW HATE!
The entire educational system has psychopaths spreading Mental Illnesses.
What were once called pedophiles, used to be arrested and prosecuted.
Now they just say a single word TRANS and they are CELEBRATED.
It’s to bad a majority of people are afraid to have any backbone, and won’t say a single thing about these criminal lunatics grooming children.
