Newsom Proposes Constitutional Amendment For Gun Safety

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday proposed a constitutional amendment to enshrine gun safety measures nationally.

Newsom’s proposed 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution includes four gun safety measures that are already part of California law: universal background checks, raising the firearm purchase age to 21, instituting a firearm purchase waiting period and barring the civilian purchase of assault weapons.

“The 28th Amendment will enshrine in the Constitution common sense gun safety measures that Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and gun owners overwhelmingly support — while leaving the 2nd Amendment unchanged and respecting America’s gun-owning tradition,” Newsom said.

The National Rifle Association voiced its opposition on Twitter, sharing a video of Newsom’s announcement with the title “Gov. Newsom Proposes 28th Amendment to Destroy Gun Rights and Disarm Americans.”

Supporters also shared their opinions on social media.

“It’s hard to overstate just how effective these new restrictions would be. Countless lives would be saved,” tweeted advocacy group Occupy Democrats.

To pass the amendment, two-thirds of state legislatures around the country must call for a constitutional convention under Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Then, three-quarters of states would need to ratify the amendment.

What an arrogant SOB using a proposed amendment to garner votes for his Presidential run. It has NO CHANCE
of passing. Neither does his reparations in California, another vote gathering operation. How slimy can he get?

Just what exactly is an “Assault Weapon” In the USA only single shot semi automatic Weapons are allowed. And just an FYI to gun banners the 2nd Amendment is part of the “Bill of Rights” it is an individual right and has absolutely nothing to do with the “National Guard”. This was all settled in the Heller decision by the Supreme Court.

If you do your research, every report on a “mass shooting”, the person had mental issues. How about getting mental help for people and stop blaming gun owners who follow the laws. When was the last time a legitimate gun owner just woke up one day and went on a shooting spree? I’ll wait why you look it up. Get people with mental problems help. Stop blaming guns.

Not sure who this would be defined, “barring the civilian purchase of assault weapons.” seems vague. The age requirement gets tricky too for some parts of the country where hunting is done. Maybe need an adult with a background check to allow the younger one to get it. Like a dad and son type of purchase.

How about a background check for mental patients or people with a violent history?

A 18 year old can be asked to serve his country in a time of war but cannot buy a weapon for his own use under his idea. at 18 you are considered a adult and it has been that way for a long time. So why the change, we have never had a problem in the past.

Right?? At 18 you can join the Marine Corps and be issued an assault weapon. In Kali, even at 21 you can’t buy a semi-auto rifle that Democrats have re-named “assault weapons”. Now, the push is to spread Kali’s diseased ideology on the rest of the nation, then decry that all firearms are “assault weapons”.

Yet more showboating!

Can’t see it passing, but we will sure be funding the TV ads.

No.
No.
No.

If someone is 18 and joins the military they can carry a fire arm. If in the military, they can carry a firearm as part of LE duties as the Military Police. Our law that you must be 21 to buy a firearm should not be a law and should never be made to be federal law. And if this passes, does this mean the federal government can no longer provide a 18 year old a firearm to shoot in a war, or are they exempt because the soldier does not OWN their gun, it is just provided to them?

I can get behind background checks. Sure, we do them already in all states … so why do we need an amendment for that? Just more grandstanding by Newscum.

Assault weapons … by whose definition? I can commit assault with a knife, a 22 cal revolver, with my hands. So what is someone wants to own an AR15 … who cares? I sure don’t. Enforce the safety rules of owning them … not restrict ownership because some Karen or Ken is afraid of a gun.

And if this passes because someone does not see the need for another to own an AR15 … or whatever, are they going to ban my 600HP Mustang? Or my modified EV vehicle that does 0-60 in under 2 seconds but only goes 50 miles on a charge? Or force a governor on my car to prevent me driving the speed at which I want to travel?

Just cause some Karen/Ken is bothered does not mean we have to ban something. Sometimes Karen/Ken need to accept the fact people can have DIFFERENT opinions then them and it is OKAY!

How would you stop the 19 year old Parkland shooter? It took him 15 minutes to buy an assault rifle. BTW I am not against guns but military styled weapons designed for mass killing should be restricted.

8
24

Please name one modern day military rifle you can purchase with out a special license to do so now.

DOH—Military styled weapons designed for mass killing are fully automatic, which are already restricted, and have been banned since 1986. The ATF, or the California DOJ, may issue a special permit to own a machine gun.

Duh

I don’t know. I do not know enough about the shooter to know if warning signs were missed or even if he has the gun legally?

But I would also want to know how many of our mass shooters have been under the age of 21.

I agree with this man. We don’t need to argue the semantics. We all know weapons are used for higher casualty purposes.

That’s exactly what Audrey Hale was thinking.
They’ve refused to release her manifesto due to fear it will set off other LGBTQ who also think guns are peachy keen.

The chances of this being implemented are slim and none, thankfully. I suggest he spend his time walking the streets of East Oakland with their mayor and talking to those he meets about how well California’s gun laws work keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.

TAKING GUNS AWAY DOESN’T MAKE IT SAFER AGAINST BAD PEOPLE, IT ONLY MAKES IT SAFER FOR BAD PEOPLE!!!

Trojan horse alert! There are two ways to do Amendments, and this way having states drive the process creates a constitutional convention where once it is in process they can change the words of the Amendment to anything they want such as just banning all arms. That’s what I recall from basic gov class in high school. Worse, I don’t think they have to even keep to that subject and can add things like limits to free speech or things like reparations to the text.

All gun laws are illegal.

12
7

oh really? You support violent felons owning machine guns?

Violent felons used to be hung, so go back to that and we don’t have an issue anymore…plus it solves prison overcrowding…plus sets an example for other would-be dirtbags.

Before he thinks about creating a 28th amendment maybe he should fully read the second amendment first.

Democrats can’t comprehend what they read.

whether possible or not…. He is getting a NATIONAL Stage ! Exactly what HE wants !
.
I’ve a friend who keeps telling me to the effect of…
Regardless of laws, as long as these weapons are manufactured (anywhere), they can be obtained.
.
Gonna be a long, long, loooooooooooong election cycle.

Until we get rid of the types like Soros, Adams, Thorpe, Price in Alameda County, etc. this country will be in the toilet by 2024 (if it isn’t there already)!!! Every nincompoop who continue to vote for the likes of Newsom, B. Lee, Becton, and so on will bring the entire Nation into the toilet!!
I pray that God will act soon and rebuild planet Earth!

I have no reason to believe ANY Constitutional amendment will ever be passed again no matter who or which party proposes it. Just look at all the hoops it would have to deal with to even get one put on any agenda.

You want gun control than emblement stop and frisk. That will do more good than anything.

Newscum spends his time And energy and our taxpayer $$ on grandstanding on a national political agenda rather than fixing our degrading state…. he knows it will never pass …. just think – he will at some point (soon I bet) run for president …. omg we’re in deep doodoo

What if the “Assault weapon” identifies as a BB gun? What is an “Assault weapon”???

Once they put a minimum age on gender reassignment surgeries then we can talk.

There aren’t enough words to describe this low life moron.

I think we need a law that says they can’t pass any new laws.

I cannot wait until this guy’s 15 minutes are up. harris is on her way out. nuisance is at about the same level of prominence as harris. nuisance is not as woefully stupid as cortez, but his inane idiocy is not as superficially humorous as that NY dimwit’s displays of simplicity. pretty clear nuisance is ready to jump in, can’t let his greasy head sit on the sideline when the likes of bobby jr and cornell west are already in.

When you cut through all the BS it’s just nothing more than: HEY EVERYBODY!! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!

There have been several well-known Republicans who have called for an automatic 5 year sentence ( Federal ) added to the original charges of any crime where any type of gun is used in the commission on a crime. No, this will not solve what is going on right now with all the gun related crimes, but it will place the fools using guns in prison so they can’t get out right away to cause more harm. You know the Democrats do not like the idea of placing criminals in jail for extended periods of time.

Pure politics, this would never fly. But he’s doin his darnest to stay in the limelight, too bad America would never vote for him, the opposition would just have to drive around LA and SF to show the homeless/drug situation.

Governor Grease bag is as stupid as a bag full of hammers. Pandering to the ignorant for votes. If he would spend 1% of time and budget to mental health and actually attempting to improve the “idea” of belonging rather than alienation of people based on status (color, creed, religion……..) we would be a far better state. You will never remove the evil in some (monsters) but you could save many along the way. My opinion only

The comments here are so filled with hate. It’s scary to read them. I don’t see what’s wrong with implementing common sense gun laws. To drive you need a license. What’s wrong with requiring civilians to get proper training on weapons before owning one? Also, if you join the military you have to do hours of training before being allowed to use an assault weapon. But an 18 year old can just go buy one. How come republicans ban abortion thinking it will stop abortion, but those same people say any type of gun control won’t work. So sick of the hate and the division in this country. We are supposed to be United, but it feels so far from that here.

2
7

Who defines the common sense?

I can get behind requiring training, but banning them out right I do not agree with – and I own no firearms. I own none because I have other means to defend myself even though I am competent in their use.

Hate: That word is used so easily and frequently that it has lost its meaning and impact on people. ‘You don’t like it’, now translates to ‘you hate it’. I don’t like a lot of things, but that does not mean that I hate them. People need to grow thicker skins and understand that not everyone has to agree with you.

Common sense gun laws would give significant prison sentences to those using unregistered or stolen weapons to commit crimes.
Instead, under Newsom and his Soros disciples, criminals are released early and they continue to commit crimes, and history has shown criminals escalate their violence.
Until criminals are not considered victims, this violence will continue. Newsom beats on his chest about California being the blueprint for the nation. Factually speaking, it appears Chicago is the blueprint for California.

There already are “common sense gun laws” you just aren’t aware of them because you listen to Gavin saying more are needed. An 18 year old can’t buy an assault weapon. Nobody can without special certification from the Department of Justice.

“Common-sense gun control” is whatever Democrats want, including a total ban on civilian gun ownership.

Newsom’s amendment has less chance of passing than the repeal of the 19th amendment, which would actually be more constructive.
