An advisory task force voted Saturday to recommend a series of steps that California lawmakers could take to make amends for historical discrimination against Blacks.
The California Reparations Task Force, meeting in Oakland, called for a state apology for racism and slavery and to consider varying amounts of payments to eligible residents.
The panel didn’t set an overall amount for how much money Blacks have lost since 1850, when California was established, through certain government practices such as housing discrimination and over-policing of Black communities.
The task force will formally turn over its recommendations to the Legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom by July 1. Lawmakers and the governor will decide what to do with them.

But, if reparations were to be paid, Native Americans should be first in line. Then in California, the Chinese, Japanese, and Mexican-Americans would be next for their contributions to the state (agriculture, railroad building etc.) Blacks are pretty far down the list of deserving.
Except for Mexicans, the people’s you listed have received reparations from the US government. As well as formal apologies.
I don’t know what these people are thinking. What is going to happen when the state turns them down? On the other hand what if the state agrees and passes this fiasco. Really shows what normal people are up against in today’s world. Very sad.
I’d be surprised if the state ever officially turns them down. There’s no way this will ever be economically feasible and lawsuits will surely be coming if they ever try to pass this into law.
What’s sad is the Dems are doing this to Black voters to trick them into voting Dem during the next election cycle. Der Furher Newsome will use this task force as a way to sell the Dems on a national stage and the State will drag their feet on this into the elections and then if they win they’ll just let this fizzle out. No more media stories, press releases etc and it’ll all be gone.

I think this is so ridiculous and such a hot potato even the hive of incompetence in Sacramento will have a hard time voting in favor of giant cash payouts. Would be fun to watch Newsom squirm if it lands on his desk though. He approves any cash payouts or ballot taxes and he is doomed for any national politics. My opinion only. I’ve been wrong before.
If you are using my money, the payment should be ZERO! I did not have slaves. My ancestors did not have slaves. I grew up dirt poor. I grew up being evicted because of a bad situation at home. Despite my home life, I grew up pulling my self up by my bootstraps. Nope, I ain’t a POc, but many of my friends today are. Some grew up with a stable home and others in similar and worse situations than me. The ones that grew up in a tough situation are in better social, economic and mental state than those that had a stable home.
Reparations for something that happened 150+ years go …. Is a JOKE! I understood reparation for the Japanese when they locked up in the 1940’s … but 150+ years ago?

First let’s give reparations to the descendants of the white men who bled and died during Civil War, fighting for freedom of black slaves. I think BLM might have forgotten about that little fact. They should pay reparations, not anyone else.

Reparations does two things gets DEMs black votes, which they need in excess of 80 percent to gain presidency and deludes blacks nation wide into voting for candidate newsom. An yes DEMs have that low an opinion of intellect of black voters. The Supreme Court will likely strike down reparations as well but it will have tricked enough black voters, which is all DEMs care about.

Ultimately Gavin has a decision to make: Give free money to a minority population (from a voting standpoint) or kiss national politics goodbye. While he has more money than he knows what to do with, votes are his real currency.
He knows if he beats on his chest about “Once again California is leading the nation by example and giving money to people who were never slaves to be financed by people who never owned slaves” probably won’t play especially well on the national stage.
He also knows that with few exceptions, most states think California is absolutely daft already, and this would further cement that belief.

California was admitted to the Union as a free state. The 1870 census list 4,800 citizens of African descent. Growth in this demographic increased to 2.99 million by 2022. The largest growth occurring after 1960. Based upon the facts I’m not certain that I see the impetus for reparations. You can get emotional about it, but California shouldn’t be libel, nor should it lead the nation on this issue. The precedent for damages awarded because you are of a particular race will certainly be a paradigm shift in this nation’s legal system. Of course, this will be challenged so it will end up in court. If my ancestors were wronged, but died 150 years prior, I don’t know of any court that would allow a case such as this. Proving the transfer of victimization from 5 or 6 generations prior is going to take some real fancy lawyering. Some arguments I have heard, try and justify the 40 acre and mule statement, and that in todays money 40 acres in California would be over $200,000,000. The promise of 40 acres and mule was made by Sherman (a Civil War General). To my knowledge this was never a congressional edict. Why would your 40 acres have been in California? At the time Sherman promised that there we’re only 4,800 citizens of African descent in California…and they were free…My recommendation to all parties is that this case is not ripe especially in California.

There are flaws with this sentiment, how many of them are actually already paying property or any taxes? The amount of vehicles I see on the road without valid registration (there is a blue charger with 2019 tags on it along Taylor regularly) is increasing and many are higher end cars. There are also the old crap cars driving crooked down the road (bent frame etc) with a dealer ‘paper plate’ cause they just ‘bought’ it. Additionally, how many folks are employed?
As for the state screwed up finances, remind me again of what our surplus was and now how much are deficit is under Dictator Newscum?
