Black Bear Diner, located at 3201 Main St. in Oakley, has reopened following a closure due to a vermin infestation.
The restaurant was closed last week on April 14 after inspectors say they found the following:
- At least 50 plus dead cockroaches noted throughout the kitchen. Areas include on cook line hand sink, under
both kitchen hand sinks at cook line, under grill line, on prep table right of table top refrigerator, under prep
refrigerator at cook line, on flooring near walk in unit, behind ovens under the back hood cook line area, under
the ware wash machine, under the shelving in the ware washing room, under the cash registers in the front area,
etc. - Approximately half dozen live cockroaches noted near the three compartment sink, ware washing area, under the ice machine, on top of a prep refrigerator across from the cookline, etc.
- A few live cockroaches also noted on a sticky trap at the main cook line hand sink.

I ate there about 4 or 5 months ago worst breakfast I’ve had in a long time couldn’t even eat it. I know Black Bear Diners are not all the same but this one is horrible.
The best time to eat at a restaurant is right after the reopen after the county closure. Spoiler alert, 9 out of 10 restaurants have bugs and/or rodent visitors. You only hear about the ones that get caught. Every other one has someone in the city that alerts them days prior to an inspection. Ask me how I know.
Yes, they have vermin visitors but properly managed restaurants pay for a subscription to pest control services which make regular scheduled visits and on-call when there’s an issue.
Agree – Responsible restaurants have the service come in almost daily when there has been a suspected issue until corrected
I’m asking: how do you know this? So gross
Don’t go there but have more reason now to avoid
They were warned about issues on a previous visit. This was a reinspection. Seriously roaches on a prep table? Out of site I get it. But visible an a cooks prep table? When you knew you had a problem? Could have closed the restaurant to address this the first time. Comes down to greed.
If they are in the hand wash sink no one is washing their hands. That is an infestation of roaches!
Don’t be so hard on the restaurant or staff.
The place could be exceptionally clean but roaches arrive daily with the deliveries, produce , meat, fish, dairy, etc.
Most chain restaurants hire a professional pest control company and get on a steady program of treatment….. but the delivery trucks come on a regular basis too.
All restaurants have bugs running around restaurants. We just don’t hear about them all the time. So that’s why I cook and eat at home.
