UPDATE: The Future Of The Old Safeway / Cardenas Market Building On Monument Blvd. In Concord

As we previously reported back in January, two new businesses will soon move into the old Safeway / Cardenas Market building on Monument Blvd. in Concord.

The building was occupied by Safeway from the 1980s until 2012, then by Cardenas Market from 2018-2019. It’s been empty ever since.

The building will be divided, and Ross Dress for Less and dd’s Discounts will move in.

It’s currently unknown when they plan to open.

UPDATE: A sign has gone up on the building with the “coming soon” announcement.

More “discount” stores. Gross.

Discount stores are a godsend for many families in my neighborhood. We didn’t get rich by needlessly paying retail!

And they will Shoplifted out of business like the stores there before.

Back in 80s the Safeway was destroyed by a huge fire while it was being constructed. It’s fate was set before it even opened.

Oh Boy!

Can you name the stores along Monument Blvd. that has closed in the last 10-20 years?

Who cases? (As long as Costco survives!)

The old costco on bates was much much better. This Costco is overcrowded and slummy.

That was Price Club on Bates. Old Costco was on Arnold Dr in Martinez.

When Costco bought Price Club, the store on Bates became Price-Costco for a short while. Then it was changed to Costco before it eventually closed.

Price Club

I remember when 4 corners was a thriving part of Concord. Colchicos (football star) liquor’s and lot of others.

I shopped at both Safeway and Cardenas. I liked both stores. Cardenas had the best freshly made guacamole. Everytime I was in both stores there seemed to be plenty of customers. Not sure what happened, but I know grocery stores in general have a very low profit margin per item.

I miss Cardenas. They had the best menudo soup take out . And best guacamole. I hate going to Pittsburg.

Not great timing given inflation and recession coming later this year.
Time will tell.

Demographics have changed. Decades ago that hood was mostly domestic caucasian. Today is it a rich mix of foreign cultures. Little Iran, Little Afghanistan, Little Honduras, Little Arabia, Little Poland, complete with Korean, Indian, and Persian markets, a Hmong and Nepalese (not like the fake one on Clayton) restaurant. The problem is, these immigrants and cannot afford much. This area is destined to be low budget for the foreseeable future, not unlike East 14th in Oakland. So Ross might be too high class and won’t have customers. A Factory-to-U store would make a killing.

Hahaha, more discount stores, what a dump this town is.

It’s not just Concord – It’s California that’s turning into a third word crime infested, corrupt self-serving government, massively overpopulated, deteriorating society.
