One of six people shot at an Oakland school campus in September has died, police said Friday.
Officers were called at 12:49 p.m. Sept. 28 to a shooting in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street, near Interstate Highway 580. The shooting was at the King Estate campus in the Oakland Unified School District.
The shooters entered the campus and started shooting but missed their intended target or targets. All six victims were adults. Two people suffered critical wounds in the shooting.
The deceased victim’s family asked school district officials not to release their relative’s last name.
“David, as he was known to his friends and colleagues, was a carpenter who served in our Buildings and Grounds Department for 18 years,” Acting Superintendent Sondra Aguilera and Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell said in a combined statement. “He passed away on Thursday, after fighting to recover from injuries he sustained during the King Estates tragedy.”
The school community is “devastated by the loss of David,” Aguilera and Johnson-Trammell said. “He will be profoundly missed. Our community mourns the loss of an OUSD hero.”
David was an East Bay resident, district officials said. He did projects that improved and beautified the district’s campuses. David installed ceiling tile, cabinets and whiteboards and replaced stairs and windows, according to the district.
David was installing new countertops when he was shot.
Employees knew him because of “his sense of humor, and as someone who loved working for the District,” Aguilera and Johnson-Trammell said. “He loved the camaraderie he had with his team, and colleagues never saw him upset about anything.”
District officials are providing support for employees in the Buildings and Grounds Department where David worked, and they are planning an event to honor his life. The time and location of the event will be made public.
For now, David’s family and loved ones are asking for privacy.
