Police officers impounded 19 vehicles and issued 720 citations to residents participating and watching Saturday night sideshows, the San Jose Police Department announced on Sunday.

In a large, coordinated effort, officers responded to a sideshow occurring at Monterey Highway and Branham Lane.

Officers said multiple vehicles were abandoned at the scene, two of which were reported stolen vehicles. Officers also said they found a discarded ghost gun.

A resident also said they were car-jacked at gun point, according to the police department.

As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, police said they impounded 19 vehicles, issued over 700 citations and wrote up 82 juvenile contact reports.

Officers said they are still towing vehicles and filing paperwork on Sunday morning.

“We’d like to commend and recognize all of the patrol officers who assisted with this operation. Many are swing-shifters who are scheduled off at 1 a.m., and some are still at work,” the police department wrote on Twitter.

QUESTION: Do you think all law enforcement agencies should crack down on sideshow activity like San Jose did last night?

LoL! Good job>>> Yes, all Police should adopt this approach. I’ve had to stop and wait for these clowns to finish showing off & get out of my way on several occasions. One went completely out of control & almost hit my vehicle. Throw these jerks in jail.

Now the DA’s and the Courts need to uphold the citations and not dismiss them. Make it painful in the wallet!!!

Not if they’re smart. Time to learn the consequences for their actions!!!

If having the chance of your car being impounded, or being issued a citation (for watching?) is enough to cause individuals to stay away from these events, great, but there is no mention of being detained, only 19 cars being impounded. Sounds like the paper work part is more trouble than it is worth. Not sure if the DA in that district is as forgiving as becton. I just do not think the level of inconvenience is not enough to stop these; those involved will just establish early warning lookouts. It makes sense to at least try to impede these, see if this is effective enough in stopping/slowing them

I hope the owners of the two stolen cars won’t have to pay impound fees to get their cars back.

Careful, your comments could be considered hate speech as they accurately apply to a certain demographic. And although that certain demographic breaks the law over and over and over, we aren’t supposed to acknowledge it, address it, or attempt to solve it.

Isn’t that just too bad if they consider it hate speech. Who cares? Those scumbags you do these things need to be hit hard in the wallet.

Dorothy November 13, 2022 - 3:26 PM - 3:26 PM

Sorry they could only issue citations and juvenile contact reports. But at least the did impound 19 cars. How long does the impound last?

I absolutely do think they should crack down on these activities. When we were that age, we went to a race track for speeding, racing or just showing off your car. We NEVER carjacked anyone nor did we steal vehicles.
These activities just encourage ILLEGAL activities and crime.

Well, growing up in SF in the 70’s, I used to drag race at the great highway on Friday and Saturday nights until SFPD would show up and close things down. It was great fun. The A&W in Daly City was the gathering place, and then everyone would head out to the great hwy, brotherhood way or Evans street in SF. I raced my 64 mustang fastback many times. Back then, everything seemed relatively safe. Even drove to Fremont Raceway several times for Wednesday night open drag races. But in my last racing days there was a different crowd that did big donuts and spinning tires, not racing. I didn’t get it. And of course, I moved on.

Gititogether November 14, 2022 - 4:48 AM - 4:48 AM

Racing from Lincoln to Fulton then hanging a slow uturn around the crowd in the center lot was alot different than taking over intersections, freeways, bridges, spinning donuts, carjacking and shooting into the air. And when the police came, never saw any disrespect towards them…my recollection is kids just packed up and left without much drama.

i think the biggest difference between street racing back then and these idiots now is attention seeking. back then, we just liked to drive fast. now it seems all they want to do is garner attention to make them feel like they are cool and liked. id go so far to say that, likely, most of those shmucks couldn’t drive their way out of a paper bag

Rex Hotchkiss November 13, 2022 - 10:03 PM - 10:03 PM

Not unless they are actually being violent or dangerous

Robert Taylor November 14, 2022 - 12:08 AM - 12:08 AM

The police everywhere really need to be proactive in stopping these idiots who participate in these illegal events. People that get caught should have their license is suspended for six months minimum and have their car impounded, not to mention, charging them a hefty fine to help pay for the police having to deal with their stupidity.
