At Tuesday’s Concord City Council meeting, council voted to introduce an ordinance requiring retail food operations to only offer disposable food ware accessories (utensils & condiments) upon customer request, in compliance with the state law AB 1276, which came into effect earlier this year, according to the City of Concord.
The goal, according to the city, is to reduce plastic and garbage in our local streets, waterways and landfill.
This will also help Concord businesses save money by giving out less free inventory.
Concord’s new ordinance will take effect on Nov. 24. (view more information on the flyer shown below)
This new ordinance won’t help with all of the litter making Concord look like an unkempt trash dump.
Irresponsible people who toss their trash on the streets are the real problem.
All this ordinance does is burden the companies with responsibilities they have no control over.
Thanks for nothing, City Council.
@CELLOPHANE..…Those people that trash up the area are just trying to make it feel like their 3rd world home country, they get homesick too.
This is not about litter. The problem is the plastic. Plastic is not recyclable. It ever goes away. Recycled plastic just gets sent to a third world nation for cash and lays around on their land. Eventually some of it breaks down to micro-plastic and winds up in our food chain. The world needs to stop using plastic. I stopped accepting plastic utensils and plastic bags a few years ago.
Oh brother!!
If I buy a hot coffee they have to ask if I want it in a cup? And CHARGE you for it?
No thanks, no cup. Just pour it in my mouth.
Gee…the brain-dead politicians who came up with this are the same idiots who shut the restaurants down and told us we could only have take out with plastic utensils which contributed to an enormous amount of extra waste in our landfills. They can shove it up their …
Glad to see them focusing on the issues most important to voters. Next up, renaming Kirker Pass Road .
Looks like the city council didn’t have a choice in the matter. The boneheads in Sacramento came up with this.

What is a “foodware accessory”? Utensils are understandable.
.
What about…
Ketchup packets?
Sugar/sweeteners?
Napkins?
.
Seems like another “feel good” and “look we’re doing something” law and probably as usual not at all well thought out. Or is it in some weird way a scheme by the companies that make the utensils?
Now, if you forget to ask for napkins or utensils, you’ll get to where you’re going and won’t have them. Makes it hard to eat and drink some meals.
