Newsom Signs Legislative Package Tackling Climate Change

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a suite of bills Friday intended to mitigate the effects of climate change, reduce pollution and hasten the state’s transition to renewable energy use.

California is now legally bound under a law Newsom signed to become sustainably carbon neutral by 2045 at the latest. As part of that target, the state also plans to reduce carbon emissions by 85 percent by 2045 and dedicate 90 percent of the state’s electrical grid to clean energy by 2035.

New oil wells will also be required to remain at least 3,200 feet from homes, schools, parks or businesses open to the public under a bill Newsom signed while also limiting pollution levels for existing oil wells that sit within 3,200 feet of public buildings.

Newsom said the roughly 40 bills — which also include efforts to capture atmospheric carbon, streamline permitting for solar panel arrays and safely recycle obsolete batteries — amount to the most aggressive action any state has ever taken to combat climate change.

“We’re not interested in investing in the industries that have created the problems that we’re trying to mitigate,” Newsom said at a bill signing ceremony with more than a dozen state legislators on Mare Island in Vallejo.

State officials estimate the legislative package, part of the state’s broader California Climate Commitment, will reduce air pollution by 60 percent, reduce oil use by 91 percent and save the state $23 billion by reducing and avoiding environmental pollution over the next two decades.

Laura Deehan, state director for the environmental nonprofit Environment California, called the bill signing a “transformative day” for the state’s effort to mitigate climate change and argued the state has more than enough potential for renewable energy.

“The solutions are everywhere all around us,” she said. “Every single day the sun comes up, there’s more sunlight that hits the Earth in one hour than our entire globe’s current energy needs for a whole year. Off the California coast, we have enough potential wind energy that we could meet all of our energy needs just from offshore wind alone.”

Newsom said he expects the bills he signed Friday and the state’s broader climate policies will be a model for other states in the future as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.

“We could talk about the way the world should be and protest it or we can actually make demonstrable progress,” he said. “And we took the latter approach here.”

Policymakers are pushing California headlong into another energy crisis by pretending the wind and sunshine will save us. Keep it up Sacramento and watch what happens. Luckily there are still some States to live in where the nonsense is minimal. At least for now but I’m not sure how long before the California cancer spreads and consumes all 50 States.

Martinezmike September 17, 2022 - 5:11 PM - 5:11 PM

Thanks for tryimg to cheer me up. Not sure it’s working.

The Fearless Spectator September 17, 2022 - 8:07 PM - 8:07 PM

California Cancer. What a beautiful, descriptive, and accurate tag line. Well said.

It reminds me of when someone says, “He took a conniption”, or she “suffered from hysteria”.

We are all suffering from “The California Cancer”, which obviously will kill us all long before climate change……..

Randy September 17, 2022 - 1:38 PM - 1:38 PM

… just more political posturing by Newsom… sigh …thinks it makes him look like he is doing somehing

WC September 17, 2022 - 2:19 PM - 2:19 PM

Gavin is insuring energy costs rise when there’s a recession.

James September 17, 2022 - 2:20 PM - 2:20 PM

Let’s hope the next buy does to this what Biden did to the pipeline.

James September 17, 2022 - 2:20 PM - 2:20 PM

oops
next guy

Ricardoh September 17, 2022 - 2:30 PM - 2:30 PM

While Asia is building coal power plants by the gross because they are needed Newsom thinks his pricey projects will do some good. We are not going to heat our homes in the winter with solar panel’s. No one is going to put electric heaters in their homes when they can turn off the power because the wind is blowing. The mining for minerals for the production of batteries is worse for the environment than what we have going now. Only thing is it will be on a different continent not ours. Figure out something worthwhile and get back to us in ten years or whatever it takes and stop doing things that are crazy. They are grasping at straws.

Martinezmike September 17, 2022 - 5:13 PM - 5:13 PM

In the furture we will all be gasping with straws

Whoe Jim September 17, 2022 - 3:23 PM - 3:23 PM

Newsom is pretending to save the planet because he feels guilty that he already destroyed California in a very short period of time…

Aunt Barbara September 17, 2022 - 6:36 PM - 6:36 PM

agree. Don’t trust this sleezy Politician trying to get votes for his White House run.

RB September 17, 2022 - 3:25 PM - 3:25 PM

Legislation based on a false issue that has not been thought out to what the consequences are going to be for this stupid agenda. Simple fact is that energy can not be delivered solely by electricity, fossil fuels are and will be essential for the future.

James September 17, 2022 - 6:51 PM - 6:51 PM

Your comment should be a bumper sticker or billboard.
Newsome knows this can never really happen,he is essentially an actor, and maybe should go do that really,he loves to mug for the camera.
Nothing he does effects him personally, but will when he’s voted out he will be in the news as pathetic in rehab alot,on the streets, then dead from OD.
He’s another Corey Haim.

chuckie the troll September 17, 2022 - 3:29 PM - 3:29 PM

“New oil wells will also be required to remain at least 3,200 feet from homes, schools, parks or businesses open to the public ”

That’s 2/3 of a mile, and this is designed to effectively end oil and gas extraction in Kleptofornica. Why doesn’t he just set a closing date for refineries in the state? The only people more insane than Democrat Politicians, are the voters who keep them in office.

WC September 17, 2022 - 9:44 PM - 9:44 PM

They can drill on angles now, Gavin accomplished practically nothing with that one.

Sick of it September 17, 2022 - 3:30 PM - 3:30 PM

He does all this crap because it does not affect him at all in what he does, but probably does affect his bank accounts with investments he quietly makes in these types of companies. And we flip the bill in both ways. This idiot needs to go away permanently from politics and any power

Cellophane September 17, 2022 - 3:47 PM - 3:47 PM

This is just more of the push to destroy the economy.

It is a plan that perpetually pushes the economy and the people to the point of ruin.

Obama, under Soros, started this push to make America into a third-world country and so far they have succeeded.

When globalization reaches its peak, there will be the uber-wealthy, politicians, and the people.

The people will be the poor and improvised, you and me.

Captain Bebops September 17, 2022 - 5:39 PM - 5:39 PM

“We could talk about the way the world should be and protest it or we can actually make demonstrable progress” and maybe destroy the world in the process. Might not be the first time this has happened.

James September 17, 2022 - 5:59 PM - 5:59 PM

“Tackling climate change”
Hilarious.
Maybe get the homeless to help with climate change.two causes he will never champion or improve in anyway,it’s all shmoozing.
A check for $400 coming will get you to vote for him,in his pea brain.

James September 17, 2022 - 7:02 PM - 7:02 PM

Politics aside,Newsom is a total stoner,do you want this guy to be your president? It doesn’t matter what side they are on,they need to be sober, and
There should be a drug test.
He’s the one that said recently-
“The whole clean and sober thing was a mistake, everyone needs to self medicate,
I think he does alot of damage to Calif when he’s stoned.
I don’t care if people smoke pot,but you don’t go to work high, esp in a position of responsibility like this.
We already have a giggling stoner VP.
Joe isn’t sober either, they are hiding his eyes for a reason. He’s all propped up on dope.
What is next?

Anon September 17, 2022 - 7:08 PM - 7:08 PM

Translation: You’ll be paying for saving the planet.

You’ll own nothing and be happy. That’s Gavin and his overlord Klaus Schwab’s vision for Your future.

reasonable September 18, 2022 - 7:55 AM - 7:55 AM

For Newsome to feel good about himself he’s screwing all of california. Even John (scary) Kerry said the the US could go to zero emissions and it wouldn’t change a thing on climate.

Obamavirus September 17, 2022 - 7:17 PM - 7:17 PM

The Marxist plan is to destroy the economy and jobs for millions of educated, qualified white people so that they can “build back better” and put their ignorant and lazy constituents in their place. This is what they are doing with police forces, schools and medical facilities across the country. Hiring criteria will be “ anti- racist” and against “ systemic racism” The lazy idiots will drive the economy into the ground like Zimbabwe.

Captain Bebops September 18, 2022 - 10:42 AM - 10:42 AM

I’m certainly not a Marxist (Marx wanted us to live like animals) but many have been concerned about the rising inequality that laissez faire capitalism has brought us over the last 40 years. Mainly souless “monkey junkies” who embrace “he with the most money or the most toys wins”. That’s a very bad way to live life and run a country.

The current “democrats” are not your parents nor grandparents Democrats. They are ideologues who just go with the wind and the narrative of the now corporate owned party. Most cannot even intelligently discuss issues and just react emotionally. They have no solutions. I think they actually believe “if you build it they will come”.

(Disclaimer: I’m not a member of any political party nor have I ever been).

I recall years ago progressive talk host Thom Hartmann objecting to reminding him about the slogan “live simply so others can simply live”. I thought it was unusual of him. I always thought the solution was a simpler society with a shorter work week and more free time. I understand that today’s millennials embrace that idea especially when they had time to think about it during the pandemic. Problem is they may not know how to get there.

Jeff (the other one) September 18, 2022 - 8:09 AM - 8:09 AM

The arrogant, delusional plicks actually think they can manage weather/climate. They have convinced themselves they are so smart as to completely re-engineer commerce, society, the atmosphere, heck even physics with the stroke of a pen on many pieces of legislation. I am sure somewhere in each of these is the vig for their friends. 40 bills. These tyrants have been enriching and empowering themselves for over 30 years, scaring people about weather. oil slick nuisance is doing what he can to look Presidential; wait’ll the nation gets a look at him.

Dr. Jellyfinger September 18, 2022 - 8:24 AM - 8:24 AM

In the meantime all the other nations that don’t give a damn will just keep pumping out the pollutants and laugh at the Americans who spend themselves into incredible debt struggling in vain to tame nature and adjust the planet’s thermostat as if we actually could.
Newsflash…. the world as been warming up since the end of the Ice Age… you think you can stop it?

The Fearless Spectator September 18, 2022 - 8:48 AM - 8:48 AM

At the end of the Newsom quote he makes reference to choosing to make “Demonstrable Progress”.

Newsom’s incorrect thinking is he believes:
demonstrable progress = spending.

His career reminds me of someone who spends a bunch of money on supplies and plants a garden, never to return to service it. A year later, when someone points out the weed patch, he simply repeats the process.
California seems to have more weeds these days.

Cellophane September 18, 2022 - 1:58 PM - 1:58 PM

Very nicely stated.

Parent September 18, 2022 - 2:17 PM - 2:17 PM

Hey Newscum followers/believers

Are you seeing the crazy yet from him yet? All he is doing is spending money to inflate his lies. He spent money while in SF promising to resolve the homeless population. Have you seen that pigsty recently? It has NEVER been as bad as it is today.

He promised he would all sorts of issues .. but is still failing to deliver on any of them. Where is the money that was promised – o yeah, it is coming at election time.

He could not even be faithful to his wife when he was in SF .. had an affair and then married his mistress.

All he is concerned with now is stirring the national pot by running ads in other states and challenging Florida’s governor over what Newscum thinks is illegal. Newscum does not even have all the facts … and probably does not even care, he just wants a challenge so he can have his name in lights.

I never said it when Trump was president, but Newscum will NEVER be MY president. At least with Trump, you knew what you are you getting. With Newscum, he is a greasy used car sale man who will say whatever it takes to screw you over

Gavin is a real sleazy POS.

Glen223 September 19, 2022 - 10:44 AM - 10:44 AM

The problem is that too many voters in California are of the “me, me, me” generation and want the “free” handouts by the democrats. There’s no way for anyone to get elected unless you have the support of the democrat PARTY.

And the California politicians have demonstrated that they are not financially responsible…which is why they continue raising taxes. But of course, you’re ok with financial irresponsibility and lack of accountability to the voters.

Original G September 19, 2022 - 12:20 PM - 12:20 PM

Too many CA voters have the attention span of a gnat.
Are more concerned how many signal bars their mobile electronics have or what superficial crisis a family of over endowed bubble butted mirror worshipers are having than elections.

Which ever side spends the most on advertising gets their vote.

Can’t recall DEMs in CA not throwing taxpayer dollars at problems, . . . too often those problems are of their own creation.

Their solution for the disastrous AB-109 passed in 2011 was to spend $10,306,082 to con voters into passing Prop 47.

they spent $18,566,255.42 to con voters into passing Prop 57, Parole for Non-Violent Criminals.
