Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District employees are going door-to-door in parts of Martinez to inspect backyard sources for any sign of invasive mosquitoes.
These mosquitoes are good at hiding among vegetation and debris and will lay their eggs in any container that can hold water, even a bottle cap. They are very small, just 1/4 inch, and very stealthy so they can easily remain undetected.
To try to find and eliminate these mosquitoes before they become more widespread in Contra Costa County, District employees are inspecting backyards, taking samples of any mosquitoes present, treating the containers where the mosquitoes are found, and providing residents with important information about invasive species of mosquitoes.
County residents’ cooperation with this process is essential as we are working diligently to try to stop these mosquitoes before they spread to other Contra Costa County communities.

Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District does an outstanding job of monitoring mosquitoes and being on the lookout for the Asian tiger mosquito that carries West Nile Virus among other very serious diseases. All of us should be supportive of their preventive efforts and do our part to minimize mosquito dangers. At one time, malaria was a threat here, too!
I don’t see much standing water these days. But all it takes is a shaded low spot where water can accumulate after you water. Anyway, I don’t need those guys to tell me what to do. The information has been out there for decades.

Our tax dollars at work, for sure. I sure sleep better knowing the county monitors, directs, and advises residents accordingly on such important buggy issue, which sure does stir up a lot of buzz! Certainly all worthwhile as we submit property tax payments, and likely increases, coming up the next tax year.
