Saturday Is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Bay Area residents with unused prescription medications sitting around the house can safely dispose of them at their local police department and other locations this Saturday during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The event, organized in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, helps keep harmful chemicals out of local water systems and out of the hands of anyone who might accidentally or intentionally consume someone else’s medicine — an issue that has become particularly of issue due to the opioid epidemic, the DEA said.

In November of 2021, the DEA reported its October take-back day resulted in the removal of 745,000 pounds of unneeded prescriptions from medicine cabinets.

Saturday’s collection event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., also includes E-cigarettes and vape pens with batteries removed but does not include injection needles.

For more information about local take-back locations and disposal methods, contact your local police department.

… and Friday is National Arbor Day.
.
Go plant a tree or two!

Most police departments have a disposal bin or kiosk in their lobby where you can drop off unneeded prescription medications. They are also found at many CVS and Walgreen pharmacies.

Here’s a list: https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/7410/Safe-Drug-Disposal

FWIW, I don’t think it’s possible for the average person to safely remove the batteries from some brands of vape pens.

It would be nice if you could get rid of old needles too.
