Agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and local law enforcement officers on Saturday cited more than 170 people accused of purchasing alcohol for minors in a statewide operation to curb underage drinking.
One goal of the operation is to demonstrate the consequences for adults that buy alcohol for minors, the ABC said in a press release.
“Unfortunately, thousands of young people die in alcohol-related tragedies every year in this country,” said ABC Director Eric Hirata. “This collaborative effort among California law enforcement agencies spotlights underage drinking prevention, increases public safety for communities, and boosts protections for California’s youth.”
The operation resulted in citations for 169 people who allegedly furnished alcoholic beverages to minors. At least eight others were cited for open containers, public drunkenness, or were taken into custody for various crimes or outstanding warrants.
Under the program, dubbed “Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation,” a minor under the supervision of a peace officer stands outside a store that sells liquor and asks patrons to buy them alcohol. The minor indicates in some way that he or she is underage and cannot purchase the alcohol.
If the adults make the purchase, they are cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor. The penalty is a minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service.
Participating Bay Area locales included:
- San Mateo County: More than 10 citations were issued in Menlo Park and San Bruno/Pacifica/South San Francisco.
- Contra Costa County: At least 12 citations were issued, in Concord and San Pablo.
- Sonoma County: At least one citation was issued.
- South Bay: At least one citation was issued in Santa Clara County.
- Santa Cruz County: At least six citations were issued.
- San Joaquin County: At least two people were cited.
Question 1: How many will be let off the hook by liberal district attorneys?
Meanwhile open drug dealing in San Fransicko totally acceptable. Come take a ride and see them in action. Turk/Hyde, Golden Gate and Larkin
It’s mindblowing how bad Turk/Hyde is. Actually scary to walk over there in broad daylight.
Come on man that was how I got my beer when I was a teenager. Never drank over 1 can. There was a liquor store in Lincoln Heights that you never had to ask more than two people.
When I was a teenager, we’d go to the DMV and apply for a driver’s license that said we were 21. In those days, they didn’t require proof, and issued a temporary driver’s license, which was good for six months. Most liquor stores, and bars accepted it as an ID even after it expired. This was when the topless bars were opening up all along Broadway St. in San Francisco, and Carol Doda was performing at the Condor Club. So you know where we went with our phony ID.
Dawg
You were obviously a worse kid then me. (smiling face)
@Dawg….’The Perfect 36″. I remember the sign in front with a giant photo of Carol Doda with two strategically-placed light bulbs.
Carol Doda died Nov 12, 2015 at 76 She was about twenty six when all this was going down. Time goes by fast when you are having fun.
@Dawg…You paid to see boobs? Any Grateful Dead concert and you could see all you wanted, as long as you didn’t mind hairy legs and armpits….tough choice then.
@anon–I got my license at the DMV on Fell, St. in the City, and they did not require proof of age. After issuing the temporary license, Sacramento did the background check, and would not issue the permanent license. It didn’t matter, the temporary license was all I needed for an ID.
In those days, the rules were so laxed at that DMV office, that I knew of a couple of guys that had a friend take the driving test for them.
So, is this same thing done for drugs, including pot? You just need to look at SF to see it is NOT…
Oh yeah, it’s better to open up “illegal” drug injection sites, Duh!
How about a bottle of Old Harper?
@Cowellian
…..and a ballpoint pen and beef jerkey?
Sorry, lost my ID in a flood
😉
I’ll bet there are alot of folks reading this that have no idea what you guys are even talking about.
I liked Carol……
“It’s past my curfew. I’m going to tell him how old I am, my parents don’t know I’m out and you tried to rape me”.
Underage drinking, yet open and encouraging drug use? This is truly bizarro world!
For a statewide sweep, sure seems a small number. And just standing outside and asking somebody to buy booze, probably in sight of a few addicts.
“One goal of the operation is to demonstrate the consequences for adults that buy alcohol for minors” Gee, thanks. We have shootings, car jackings, constant theft, drug dealing, but the focus is on this.
So… they ask you to commit a crime and if you do it…. you’re busted.
What’s next? maybe dare someone to jaywalk?
Double dog dare someone to break a window?
The possibilities are endless!
Flowers & Rainbows
Minors drinking is not a good idea, unless supervised by a parent, so yes to those citations. But, allowing drug dealing and use, those folks deserve years in the state pen.

It’s always amazing to me that people do this, kids have their whole lives to mess their lives up with alcohol, why expedite the process?
This seems relatively low on the list compared to Fentanyl pouring across the border and killing people.
I haven’t heard of liquor store alcohol being laced with Fentanyl. There are many news stories about various recreational drugs being laced with it however. Peculiar that is ignored……
