The Martinez City Council will decide Wednesday whether to spend $217,500 to kick start the process of dredging the marina for the first time since 2017.
The funds, already accounted for in the city’s capital improvement program budget, would go toward project design, sediment testing, and permitting requirements.
These initial steps are time sensitive and would take months, needing to be done before the project goes out to bid and a contactor can be selected, according to a staff report for Wednesday’s meeting.
The city estimates the council would select a contractor sometime between May and July. This would allow construction to begin in August and end in November or early December.
The city’s total budget for the project is $1 million. If the project doesn’t start on time, it could be delayed until 2023.
The Martinez City Council will meet virtually at 7 p.m. Wednesday and can be viewed at https://bit.ly/32SgHHO.
Get her done, Mayor Rob!
BTW – interesting how many Bay Area marinas need to be dredged so frequently. What happened to rapidly rising sea levels?
Is this with the purpose that ferry service could start at this location?
And the author of this piece didn’t think anyone would have follow up questions? Journalism is dead… they just spit out facts like a blotter
What is dredging needed for in this area? Clean up? Stabilization? What does this entail?
Dredge, baby, dredge! I’m pro-dredging. Only because it seems to get done only when it’s long overdue. We’re either going to have maritime infrastructure in the bay estuary or we’re not.
.
Dredge ASAP before the cost increases even more… and to the point that Martinez “redirects” the funding and can no longer afford it as part of the CIP!!!
.
Hopefully they will make the right decision on time and on budget.
Dredging keeps the marina operating for 5-10 more years, but the pier and the breakwater both have major structural flaws. Sadly, the city’s application for a State of California Prop 68 grant to fix these issues was denied. And the city simply doesn’t have the financial resources to do the fixes itself. Some major re-imagining of the marina may be called for.
