Bay Area Air District Asks Public To Not Burn Wood During New Year’s Weekend

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is calling on the region’s residents to forego burning wood in their fireplaces and wood stoves this weekend to prevent air pollution.

While air quality is not expected to be poor during the New Year’s holiday weekend and the district has not issued a Spare the Air alert, the district is still discouraging wood burning to prevent poor indoor and outdoor air quality.

The district has also asked residents to not set off fireworks, which can also contribute to air pollution and create excess smoke and ash.

“Let’s all celebrate the new year and protect the health of our family and neighbors by refraining from wood burning and personal fireworks displays,” district executive director Jack Broadbent said. “Both wood burning and fireworks can create significant air pollution in our neighborhoods.”

According to the district, wood smoke contains small particles and carcinogens that can make the air unhealthy, especially for children, older adults and people suffering from respiratory illnesses.

Bay Area residents can find air quality information from the district by visiting www.baaqmd.gov or www.sparetheair.org.

Enjoy the holiday responsibly…Don’t shoot your gun into the air, you never know where the bullet is going to land. Only shoot at the ground or a good backstop. HNY!

Same story as last week but for the fireworks.

People’s reactions will be the same too.

Appointed bureaucrats never see themselves as irrelevant as people see them.

Old Timer December 31, 2021 - 8:22 AM - 8:22 AM

And don’t go to the bathroom and clog up the sewer system and don’t drink either lol.

Badge1104 December 31, 2021 - 8:30 AM - 8:30 AM

Big surprise them saying that! They say that every Christmas and every New Year’s.
And what about the up to 29% of our air pollution that blows over from China? Are there being told not to do that?

Pepe December 31, 2021 - 8:45 AM - 8:45 AM

The same tired old B S from Broadbent. All Sumer long the wildfires kept our skies filled with smoke, like fog. Now our skies are crystal clear, and that tyrant is always pushing his hatred for people that like to enjoy a warm fire on a cold winter night. Broadbent is a fear monger and unamerican. Live free and enjoy your fireplace. It’s your right.

Please stop with the same ol stupid dont burn wood announcements! It’s old news repetitive crap everytime there is a holiday and temps go below 55 degrees.

That’s a big fat NO!

When will they begin a “voluntary” BBQ buy-back program?

Killjoy December 31, 2021 - 9:38 AM - 9:38 AM

Pound sand, Jack.

Cyn December 31, 2021 - 2:37 PM - 2:37 PM

@Killjoy
My sentiments exactly. If Jack was so concerned about air pollution, he’d be spending all his time telling Biden to close the border and stop flying illegal aliens all over the country in those big planes with those big polluting jet engines. Instead, here is his message in a nutshell……”to all law-abiding American citizens, don’t enjoy yourself by lighting a fire in your fireplace on New Year’s Eve.” Killjoy, your words to him are too kind.

Seems like every holiday they want to control you with a no burn. My fireplace will erupt in a fire tonight due to climate change. And I will pop a few Black Cat firecrackers for a grand New Years celebration.

S December 31, 2021 - 10:04 AM - 10:04 AM

Just remember all you Q’er’s out there… Cooking fires are exempt. Just a small shoulder today for some Pulled Pork. Started the fire at 7AM, Butt went in the Smoker at 8:30 and will come out about 3ish….

We never stay up til Midnight, but set an alarm for 11:50PM just to say it….

Happy New Year to Y’all…

I’m surprised that these guys haven’t tried to link wood burning to Covid. Something like, “The additional particles of wood smoke that are introduced into our collective air will make residents more susceptible to contracting Covid.”

Does anybody actually listen to these self-important air bags?

Oh my gosh…..You gave them their next brilliant idea!

Bobfished December 31, 2021 - 11:54 AM - 11:54 AM

I will be having a cozy fire in my wood burning stove tonight.

I would like the Bay Area quality management district to be shut down since it takes too much of our tax dollars.

Since I can’t have that, I think I’ll burn wood as I please.

https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/2020/bay-area-air-quality-management-district/

I’m in no way in favor of this District existing, but the workers only get benefits. No salaries.

S January 1, 2022 - 5:38 PM - 5:38 PM

Hi Addlepate,

Trans Ca is not a gov’t data site, it is operated by a research outfit largely funded by donations. Some public agencies do not provide complete salary data and T C doesn’t always follow up.

BAAQMD makes some huge salaries and benefits, ie: Deputy Executive Director $243,068.80 – $295,451.65 Annually

https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/baaqmd/classspecs/1074911

Even a person who does data entry gets paid pretty well:
Staff Specialist I/II
SF, CA
$91,138.25 – $122,133.97 Annually

See what happens when I burnt wood yesterday…. I got time to surf around the web today… and the “Q was delicious…

🙂

DD December 31, 2021 - 12:49 PM - 12:49 PM

I’ll be enjoying a Spite Fire this evening.

MikeyV December 31, 2021 - 3:29 PM - 3:29 PM

I’ll have a nice fire tonight in my old-ass house. Then fall asleep about 9 pm.

As for fireworks? I rely on them to wake me up ’bout 11:55pm – revel a bit and back to sleep.

Happy New Year friends!

12GA December 31, 2021 - 6:07 PM - 6:07 PM

Tell that to all the homeless around our freeways 🤣 BAAQMD is a joke.

Vindex December 31, 2021 - 10:47 PM - 10:47 PM

Enviro-Nazi. Broadbent simply wants to control us. Air before mankind existed wouldn’t be clean enough for Broadbent. I’m not a polluter who hates our environment, but I also live in the real world where people have fires. I honestly can’t believe he still has a job. He must make a bundle.

Frank January 1, 2022 - 10:22 AM - 10:22 AM

He would prefer his subjects call him Lord Broadbent. My question to Lord Broadbent is why do you try so hard to get your name in print? Running for something are we?
