The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

QUESTION: How do you feel about stores asking for donations every time you swipe your card to make a payment?

Depends on where I am…basically I only donate to animals and veterans. In my opinion this country does not do enough for our vets.

It doesn’t bother me, I just politely say no. What I don’t like is people standing outside of stores hitting me up for money, I have no idea who they are, or if they are legit. With them, I just walk on by without looking at them.

The only time I give to someone who is outside the store is if it is The Salvation Army, growing up in Denmark in the fifties, after second WW my parents didn’t have much, although we were always warm, had good food, my dad was a Gardner, and decent clothing, my mother always said I hope I’m never so poor I don’t have anything to give to others, and she came from a very poor and big family. We always did our Christmas Shopping in the nearest town, and the Salvation Army’s bell ringers was alway at the town square and my mother never failed to give them something, even if we had to go out of our way in the cold and snow, so I can’t pass them by without giving them something.

This doesn’t bother me at all. You can give or politely decline. It also gives everyone an opportunity to help, not just those with a little extra money in their pocket. A win-win situation.

Seriously. Stores are asking for donations. Ya gotta be kidding me. As a person who did a lot of local fundraising for non-profit. Some of those that I made payments to did not event consider donating to a good cause.

I believe in giving to the human fund

Last time I was at Safeway the clerk ask me if I wanted to make a $2.00 donation to feed the homeless—said OK–when I got home and checked my receipt, they charged me $10.00–no more donations at Safeway!

It is tedious and slightly obtrusive.

I’m far more offended by the swivel iPad with a tip screen for the person that did nothing more than hand me my fast food. YOU DON’T GET A TIP FOR SHOWING UP TO WORK.

I was at a yogurt shop last week, I made my cup, set it on the scale and the kid behind the counter entered my charge and then turned the screen to me so I could input a tip. Of course I declined, but to even ask is offensive. The kid did NOTHING to earn anything resembling a tip, not even a greeting as I walked in. This is the GoFundMe generation gone haywire, kids raised by a generation where everyone got a trophy . You wan’t more money? Get a better job. I won’t be going back to that shop (next to Rocco’s)

What gets me every time is when they take your check if it contains cash they ask you if you need change. They should never do that. When it is rung up and change is due it goes back to the customer for them to decide how much they want to leave.

No should mean No. If I have never once said yes to Safeway or CVS asking for money, their computer system should take me off the list.

It’s incredibly annoying, almost as bad as places that ask me to tip on the screen for someone that hands be a sandwich.

If I want to make a tax deduction to a charity, I’ll gladly do it myself. Stores use the prompt at the register to collect funds as a write-down against their taxable income.

Just say NO !

You make the donation of your hard earned dollar and the store takes the tax deduction…..

NEVER Donate in this way…………….

If the store is going to match my donation, fine …. otherwise I decline. If anyone is asking for any kind of donation outside a store I ignore them, and if anyone panhandles me I very impolitely tell them to FO.

Well, if you don’t ask, you don’t get. I rarely donate under these circumstances, however. The only time I donate when swiping is when Safeway asks to buy a bag of groceries around Thanksgiving.

I work at a store that ask customer’s if they want to round up to the nearest $, so it is always 99 cents or less, I think most people don’t really pay attention. Some seem to get annoyed, I always just say “whatever you are comfortable with”, many say I have certain charities I give to, which I totally understand. We change the cause every month or so, right now it is cancer research, sometimes reading program for children, heart association, when we had horrible fires a few years ago, they donation went to that. When I shop where I work I always round up, in other stores not always, if I pay cash I like to get the change I use it for parking when I go to the City and other areas.

Super annoying as I never give to any charities. Scams all of them.

There are many charities that are not scams, some take more for administrive cost, however it is possible to find out which take less for overhead. Many charities and benefits do a lot of good, that help many people. As well as donations to cancer research, the heart association, alzheimer association, many others.

Stores don’t ask for donations to help humanity. They’re doing it to get a tax write off. Beware.
