State mediators are getting involved in negotiations between Mt. Diablo Unified School District and its teachers’ union, which this week filed an impasse declaration, saying the district’s bargaining team has failed to present a reasonable proposal.
The current contract for workers with the Mt. Diablo Education Association, which represents more than 1,500 teachers, nurses, librarians and various school specialists, expired on June 30, and MDEA filed the declaration with the state’s Public Employee Relations Board after negotiations left the two sides far apart.
PERB is now referring the case to a mediator who will schedule meetings in an attempt to reach an agreement.
According to the district, agreements have yet to be reached on salaries, benefits, class sizes and other topics. The union is asking for a 12.5 percent salary increase over the three-year proposed contract, saying its members have not had a salary increase since 2017, while the district says its most recent offer was a 7 percent raise over the three years.
“If district management agrees to a fair and just settlement, we can reach a tentative agreement during mediation. If district management continues to fail our educators, the next step after mediation is fact-finding.
If the fact-finding process does not lead to a just and fair contract, we may need to call a strike and withhold our services until an agreement can be reached,” MDEA president Anita Johnson said in a statement.
MDUSD Superintendent Adam Clark said, “We are going to go through the impasse process and continue to bargain in good faith and we’re going to try to reach an agreement.”

Meanwhile, kids get dumber, softer, and indoctrinated with left wing rhetoric.
.
.. and D and F grades are being eliminated because failure hurts their kids’ feelings. Oh puh-please… Spare me the spineless approach to objective performance grades!
.
School vouchers please.
.
absolute embarrassment of a district.
We’ll, I know this will garner a lot of comments from the union haters out there! However, keep in mind that the federal cost of living increase for 2022 alone is 5.9%. Given this is a 3 year contract, I don’t think it’s too extreme. I don’t expect teachers to take less than the cost of living. 7% is ridiculous. The employees wouldn’t even keep up the cost of living.
How many teachers will you need to fire to pay for that?
They’re already very well paid, compared to other teachers across the state and country!
How about performance related pay, if that was introduced we’d being seeing a lot of teachers returning money to tax payers, as MDUSD is terrible and going backwards!
They are the lowest paid district in the area. Also, don’t forget that health premiums have gone sky high. At this point, the teachers are actually losing money.
They are also the least effective in the area. Maybe a merit-based retention system is warrented.
Most teachers deserve all the pay and benefits they can get.
They get lifetime pensions. They don’t deserve any more than the private ambulance paramedics slaving away for dirt wages.
Most teachers are left wing radicals anyway.
Teachers Unions.
Hey, Social Security only increases 5.9% this year, when clearly it should be 16.5%.
Get in line you failing grifters.
The teachers Union gonna call the FBI on any parents that have a problem with their strike since according to the NSBA parents are domestic terrorists.
Dissolve the union or refuse to bargain any more. Let them go on strike. Computers teach kids remotely anyway. Worthless people and not cost effective. Make them all re-apply for their jobs.
So sickening. Both sides bicker over money while a 6th grade student got a concussion after being attacked by 2 adults at her school.
The mother of the brave girl spoke bravely demanding action and justice for her daughter at meeting December 14, 2021. Go to 10:25 of the Part Two video and listen.
Safety and learning first, then raise.

That is absolutely terrible. I used to work at that school, and unfortunately, it does not surprise me. However, the teachers at that school are amazing. They just don’t get enough support. The school itself does not get enough support. They are one of the most left behind middle schools in the district. Don’t blame teachers for wanting a better salary. That isn’t only the only thing they’re fighting for. Good teachers will leave the district if they can’t get a raise. This school year already has teachers retiring. We are losing teachers!!! The district is having trouble filling positions because of the low rate of pay and the general disrespect shown by the district administration. You want your teachers well paid so that they can stay in the district!
“However, the teachers at that school are amazing. They just don’t get enough support. The school itself does not get enough support.“
It’s this sentence that’s been said for decades. What type of support is it they need? If you say mental support I would agree. Teachers are the most spoiled, arrogant, brainwashed communists on the planet. Babysitting kids and throwing workbooks at them ain’t hard. Who are you trying to fool? DEFUND MDUSD.
Sam- totally agree. NONE of them supported patients when we were picketing to open the schools. They can all just suck it. Most MDUSD teachers are spoiled, arrogant, selfish, and don’t care about the kids at all. The board is a bunch of entitled narcissistic mouth-breathers who only know how to parrot a party line. The district itself is too big and poorly run. Crossing my fingers it gets taken over by the state sooner rather than later. Most of the teachers are rabid socialists that HATE parents. I supported the crap out of teachers until I saw what they chose to do when the schools first closed down. And, then, when the next year happened… The union itself is a virus, infecting everything it touches. Anyone that supports that horrid group of people deserves several slaps in the face.
The Amateur Teachers Union has submitted a counter motion that every teacher or district employee that complains about anything but the well-being of children is immediately barred from working in the district.
We need school choice now. It’s criminal to keep poor children trapped in failing schools. My zip code should not determine the quality of my child’s education.
I thought class size was governed by legislation. No?
Not any more. 1-3 grades have 31 kids and 4-5 34 in mdusd. Just a few schools in the district have parent clubs that can afford aides.
And as for the life long pensions, after 23 years I only get 48% of my last pay. Not enough to live on in this area. And I get a reduction in my social security that I paid in to in my first career and none of my husband’s survivor benefit. Look up teacher social security windfall law. Thankful I have it, but it’s Not as rosy as everyone thinks.
And no raise since 2017. So divide that 12.5 over 7 years. Not close to cola.
@Anon retired teacher – 48% of your last pay for life is far more than the average American dare withdraw from their 401k without running out of money in 20 years.
The entire time I was in school during the 60s and 70s, class size was 30. My daughter graduated from College Park in 2019 and she said it was 30 for her as well, although some classes had 35 and some had 20 her senior year. Same here.
Class size is not so important.
I have lost all respect for the MDUSD after their blatant support for the domestic terrorist group BLM.
Hear, hear. They are 100% politicized and will actively seek to do that to your kids, too. They feed them what they believe the kids should think instead of educating them and allowing them to form opinions. They shove that diversity is better down their throats when no study has actually concluded that without tweaking interpretation. I experienced that first hand. One of the teachers told my kid that the BLM looting and terrorists were just protesting and no one got hurt during that. Then, she proceeded to tell the kids that they should be mad and scared because people were protesting outside the Capitol and killing everybody. Pulled my kids. This crap is not ok.
@ anon
So they’re supposed to just keep working through their career without a raise? Did/do you do that? I doubt it! Yes, they are highly educated. And yes, their goal is to teach children. Both factors are supportive of a decent salary. Teachers have always been paid poorly for the value they bring to society.
After everything they did during COVID, good luck getting parent support on this one.
This kind of comment infuriates me. Teachers worked their asses off last year. They did everything humanly possible to educate children!
Teachers were not standing in food lines or spending hours on hold trying to get unemployment checks. While teacher’s worked hard many parents were not given the chance to work. The district has scarred this community and its students
Teaching from bed and relaxing at home is not “working hard”
Then refusing to go to work because they were scared of a virus with a 99.997 survival rate is not brave.
Florida is doing great.
@Libby Mama – Is changing your lesson plan for the first time in 20 years working your ass off?
@Libby Mama
“They did everything humanly possible to educate children!”
…..and the illegal immigrants don’t plan on staying here too long.
ALL LIES!
Libby- you are a LIAR. You should be ashamed. This is the furthest thing from the truth I have ever heard. These teachers negotiated to work for like 3 hours a day. It was required time. Then, they decided that 30 minutes is good enough. They ROBBED our children and they can all go rot in hell.
The teachers would not strike…..their leadership is weak and they don’t have the numbers. Any teacher who strikes on this one is too stupid to have a teaching credential. It ain’t going to happen. It is all theatre.
Too stupid to have a teaching credential? All of them have credentials. As for leadership, it’s the district administration that is weak. The district makes stupid decisions like paying for training programs that are useless, buying cars for the district office, etc., but they don’t put money where they need to be putting it.
Look at this liberal karen mama shill go…can’t even comprehend the post she’s responding to 🤣🤣🤡
Why do we always hear about problems at MDUSD and not at Acalanes or San Ramon Valley?
One reason could be that there are communists on the board at MDUSD and they are incompetent and only interested in CRT and other race issues like BLM murals and not concentrating on the business at hand
Bingo
You should look up the wages those two districts offer their teachers. Maybe they have nothing to complain about??
Maybe they don’t have to educate so many illegals that just make everything worse? Ever think about that? Our whole system needs to be rehauled. No education for illegals. They drain our resources and pull our schools down. Hard-working parents cannot get their children educated fairly because we are always paying for the illegals!
MDUSD is top-heavy with administrators and advisors.
The district needs to get its house in order.
But they won’t.
The people need representatives, not whatever you want to call what we have now.
Better pay and working conditions attract better employees at any company and the same applies to teachers in our district. My son lost a very good teacher to Pittsburg Unified a few years ago because benefits and pay were much better for her family. Every person including teachers deserve a yearly cost of living wage. I looked at the salaries of the school districts in the area, MDUSD teachers are not over asking.
I didn’t see BLM messages all over those other districts bulletin boards. MDUSD is full of leftist radicals. They deserve nothing.
Defund public schools give me back my tax dollars. MDUSD is run by communists. Cut it all off and start over.
Run by BLM terrorist
The students must be allowed to protect themselves. Lower the age to purchase a firearm to 14, raise our taxes, and buy guns and ammo for every student.
Also, increase the police budget and have snipers on every rooftop and hallway in all schools.
Problem solved!
It is run by cultural Marxists as most public schools are currently. No more left wing hacks. They’ve failed so bad it’s not even funny but again that is their plan to stagnate everything to usher in more communist gov/neo corporate control. The elite scum that have transformed Ca into a mystery meat pastiche paradise for parasites and grifters needs to be countered with the upmost urgency. To these teachers if you were about money you picked the wrong profession. I like the performance pay method. I have no issues paying successful teachers who crank out high scoring students consistently. Private school all the way in coco county if you want your child to thrive until the modern red armies propaganda agents have been fired and driven out.
Better yet, if a parent is capable and they can handle the financial hit, home schooling produces superior results.
Where does MDEA think this money is coming from? Didn’t over 1,000 students leave the district last year while it was closed? They aren’t coming back. Housing is too expensive for young families in this area so school enrollment declining, which means less money coming in.
Teachers probably deserve some sort of increase or bonus. This last year was very hard for teachers and families alike. I think it’s a tough sell. The unions were instrumental in closing the schools and keeping them closed for 18 months. It caused massive disruption in a million ways, including to teachers. Now the argument is “we deserve it because the last year was so hard”. Yes it was, but maybe keeping the schools closed for so long was a bad idea, not supported by science, and we all have to pay some price for it for a while. Most of us parents aren’t getting raises and we have therapy bills for our kids now. Maybe teachers could go one year without a raise to let parents anger dissipate.
I am in no way anti-teacher. They have mostly worked really hard to compensate for the disastrous decision to close schools. So have parents. MDEA should at least replace their leadership. Anita Johnson is massively unlikeable and is steering you into a PR disaster.
My two left and we are never coming back! If anyone that can afford to leave is still there, well, I don’t have a very high opinion of them and the abuse they are subjecting their children to. Some people have no choice and that is WRONG. MDUSD needs to be defunded and broken up. Rehauled completely. MDEA is a terrorist organization and HATES parents. I cannot even write what I believe should be done to them.
Privatize education and get gov’t out of it. Provide vouchers for low income families so that all can choose which schools they will attend. Market forces will determine salary levels and will eliminate teachers that cannot, or do not, perform. Competition raises the bar….its about time we applied competition to education providers as well.
Vote for school choice. It would make it a constitutional right for every student to get 12k of the ourrent 20k+ (tax ppaid dollars) allocated per student currently sent to every school a child is enrolled in. Yes, This is the money already allocated from our fiscal bugget. The difference is the district will get what’s left for the now empty seat, and the student will get the Monies(voucher) to send to the school of their choice. The money hey don’t use, goes toward their higher education.
please Lool it up…and support this bill. get educatedyourself. Parents can use it for school growth type options such as sports for Physical education. You chose the school,. Private, public, charter. Make out schools fight to earn the privilege of teaching our children.
