More Rain Expected To Arrive In The Bay Area Tonight – “Atmospheric River” Coming This Weekend

The National Weather Service is forecasting more rain to arrive in the Bay Area late Thursday and into Friday, but the biggest rainfall amounts are expected on Sunday into Monday via an “atmospheric river” that could bring up to 9 inches of rain to some elevated parts of the region.

Forecasters said the rain coming through Thursday night into Friday afternoon will affect the North Bay more than other parts of the Bay Area, with areas south of the Golden Gate not expected to get more than a half-inch of rain from the storm.

Southerly winds of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph along the coast and higher elevations could blow through the region, according to the weather service.

However, the most serious storm will come this weekend, with the atmospheric river possibly bringing 6 to 9 inches of rain in areas like the North Bay mountains and up to 3 inches in other parts of the region.

Flooding is possible as a result of the weekend storm in areas with poor drainage, but forecasters said the weather system is still too far away to make more exact predictions.

The major weather system this weekend will also bring major waves along the coast, with swells as high as 20 to 30 feet coming starting Sunday and peaking Monday into Tuesday, according to the weather service.

As a result, agency officials said a high surf advisory or warning could be issued as soon as Friday, and people are advised to keep an eye out for rip tides and sneaker waves as well as hazardous conditions for small vessels on the water.

I’ll believe it when my many broken bones begin to ache.

Or,

the barometer finally starts to drop significantly.

Either way, I’m looking forward to a good ol’ stump washer.

@cellophane…my right knee let me know a couple days ago. It is a fairly solid predictor.

Finally! Rain dancers are starting to work properly.

Isn’t it the same thing that used to be called “Jet Stream”?
Is it the new “Climate Change” term?

Old Otis
Yes. Jet Stream is too racist so they had to change it. Atmospheric River is woke!

yep, what used to just be a storm system is now an atmospheric river (dumbest name IMO, followed by the recently coined “polar vortex,” which back in the day meant f’in freezing). All these clever names now for weather. No worries, pretty soon, someone will somehow be offended by one of these terms.

I think they used to call this the Pineapple Express.

New words, same meaning.

Makes some people feel like they’er smarter.

Makes some people look kinda peculiar.

Old Otis-

They have not invented a new term. The Jet
Stream and an Atmospheric River are two
separate things. They do work together at times.

Climate Crisis!!!

Time to plant grass that has been dead for two years?

Our home is floating down the road as I write this….Climate change is upon us. Just look at the leaves on the trees-they are changing colors. Biden just announced in another one of his rambling speeches that he wants to do away with millions of cars on our roads. In other words, forcing us onto public transportation.

I liked when the weatherman just stated the weather, Rain, clouds, sunshine, snow, fog. Kept it simple. Seems these days everything has to be dramatized.

Atmospheric river, wider than a mile
You’re crossing me in style, Sunday
Oh, rain maker, you dam breaker
Wherever you’re going, were flooding that day!

Flood maker, off to submerge the world
There’s going to be a broke levee….
We’ll wash up at the same rainbow’s end, waiting, round the bend
My big cloud bursting friend, Atmospheric River, and me….
