Bay Area Health Officers Announce Criteria To Ease Region’s Indoor Mask Requirements

Health officials across nine Bay Area jurisdictions announced their criteria Thursday to eventually lift the region’s requirement to wear a mask indoors regardless of vaccination status.

The health officers in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Sonoma counties and the city of Berkeley initially issued the mandate Aug. 3 amid a wave of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations due to the highly contagious delta variant.

On Thursday, the health officers argued that the wave is now receding, and a plan to transition away from the mandate in the coming weeks is necessary.

Each county as well as Berkeley will lift the mandate respectively when it has reached the moderate or yellow tier of COVID-19 transmission as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for at least three weeks; when its COVID-19 hospitalizations are “low and stable,” as determined by local health officials; and when 80 percent of each jurisdiction’s total population is fully vaccinated or eight weeks have passed since federal authorization of the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11.

As of Thursday, none of the eight counties are in the moderate transmission tier. Contra Costa County is currently “Substantial,” and 71.2% of Contra Costa’s population has been fully vaccinated.

Some indoor masking requirements will remain in place under state and federal guidance even after the regional masking orders are fully lifted, including in K-12 schools, health care settings and while using public transit.

.
Yeah, let’s arbitrarily move the goal posts..
.
“COVID-19 hospitalizations are “low and stable,” as determined by local health officials”…
.
If it’s discretionary, then where is the “science”?

parent October 7, 2021 - 2:47 PM - 2:47 PM

They will never give up the control that they stole. Never. That is why it is discretionary. They will argue that as experts they know best …

For 3 weeks we need to keep at an aribitray number … yeah, too bad they do not realize most places are NOT following their mandates.

I walked into a place for lunch across from Todas Santos Park. They did not ask me about my status … just came, took my order, and let me eat with my companions. They did have a sign out front saying that they would check …

Vet1776 October 7, 2021 - 4:16 PM - 4:16 PM

it was never about the science. all about control

parent October 7, 2021 - 2:09 PM - 2:09 PM

So per the Contra Costa Website, 82% of our older population is fully vaccinated. Why does this article say only 71.2%? Why do we have different numbers?

Total population vs 12 and up

America October 7, 2021 - 3:26 PM - 3:26 PM

Confuse the people. It makes them frightened, and easier to control…

The Observer October 7, 2021 - 4:25 PM - 4:25 PM

The 71.2% figure applies to the total population, including children currently not eligible to be vaccinated. It’s clear that the masking order will stay in place until “eight weeks have passed since federal authorization of the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. Since the FDA and CDC are unlikely to approve a vaccine for children under 12 right away, it’s this provision that virtually guarantees that the masking order will stay in place through the end of the year.

Getting people to accept this without pushback seems unlikely and I really can’t blame them.

parent October 8, 2021 - 7:13 AM - 7:13 AM

So we have different sources of numbers … different sets of data … to confuse the general public …

Got it.

Wish leaders would be more transparent, but then if they were we would see through their BS.

Randy October 7, 2021 - 2:10 PM - 2:10 PM

… so another flip flop by Newsom… he said he was getting rid of color tiers… now the yellow tier is the criteria…. he’s so wishy washy…. why can’t we get rid of his lack of leadership?

chuckie the troll October 7, 2021 - 2:19 PM - 2:19 PM

Would being a “Friend of Gavin” help? Or maybe being a large contributor to a certain political party?

Dr Jellyfinger October 7, 2021 - 7:52 PM - 7:52 PM

I will never understand why anyone would ever name a restaurant “The French Laundry”….. I mean, the French aren’t real famous for bathing regularly or even using deodorant for that matter…. imagine some couple days old laundry sitting around and letting the BO ferment.
Geez! not really the appetite stimulant I’d advise.
Yet some folks don’t mind paying $900 per plate to eat there (not including the bar tab & tip)… Well, go ahead, but Momma Jellyfinger never raised such a foolish child.

Benzo October 8, 2021 - 8:51 AM - 8:51 AM

@Dr Jellyfinger – It is called the French Laundry because in the 1920s, the building was owned by John Lande who used it as a French steam laundry.

32NK October 7, 2021 - 2:23 PM - 2:23 PM

What a joke! This isn’t going to encourage people to get vaccinated. Even IF these requirements are met, they will move the goal posts again, that you can count on. Take a hike Bay Area Health Dictators!

32NK October 7, 2021 - 2:32 PM - 2:32 PM

If you just do this, then you can have this….where have I heard that before?? 🙄

Wage Slave October 7, 2021 - 4:32 PM - 4:32 PM

It puts the needle in its skin, or it gets the mask again.

BodyPolitic October 7, 2021 - 2:57 PM - 2:57 PM

This is absolute tyranny and government overreach…needless to say, our clan is voting with our feet and wallet. We’re hunkering down at home and letting the Kabuki theater (Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors) continue. Our family is fully vaccinated, but refuse to be complicit in this ludicrous process and assault on our privacy.

Captain Bebops October 7, 2021 - 2:59 PM - 2:59 PM

Another clown show. Does anybody pay attention to them anymore?

America October 7, 2021 - 3:18 PM - 3:18 PM

Be prepared for them to yank the rug out from under your feet. Twosome and his health goons get a thrill every time they do.

Patriot1776 October 7, 2021 - 3:25 PM - 3:25 PM

This is the new control measures that this country is pushing to become the BS “new normal” and sadly has nothing to do with “protecting the masses” or “reducing the transmission”..it is not big more than how far and how much can we get away with I taking the peoples rights away. Pay close attention to Australia people. If you think that could or won’t happen here, you are only fooling yourself. These people don’t believe in the peoples civil liberties, they want to crush freedoms to force compliance. WTFUP.

Masks on.

Masks off.

Time change on.

Time change off.

I see no difference.

It’s all about control.

If anyone’s health was even considered it was in jest.

Drive through the parking lot at county.

Spot all the brand new cars.

They belong to the “health” mandators.

Wage Slave October 7, 2021 - 4:38 PM - 4:38 PM

Visiting in Idaho now, and no mask mandate despite being just a bit past the peak of their strong delta wave. I very much prefer to be among people that value their freedom above some illusory safety.

California is post America. It will get more and more authoritarian even if covid fades away. They have a eutopia to build, and they know best. They know they have near total institutional control and nothing really stands in their way, not even the constitution. If you value your freedom, make plans to leave, it will not be getting better here.

The Mamba October 7, 2021 - 5:13 PM - 5:13 PM

This is crazy, absolutely crazy.

Anon October 7, 2021 - 5:16 PM - 5:16 PM

Just another ploy to make vax turn against non vax!

Sancho Panza October 7, 2021 - 5:58 PM - 5:58 PM

Back with the color-coded nonsense again! I feel we are in a perpetual game of that children’s game… Mother May I? Except, now it’s Health Director Farnitano, may I? While he replies, “No, you may not do that, but you may take three giant steps backwards instead!”

Luke October 7, 2021 - 7:17 PM - 7:17 PM

Somehow, we will meet these metrics in the next 3 months. They will lift the mask mandate again for a few weeks, we will start hearing about a new variant, and the cycle will begin again with the mask mandate.

Not Me October 7, 2021 - 8:45 PM - 8:45 PM

I read you don’t need a mask to use a public bathroom in a business, Makes sense except in the past the bathroom was the most likely place to get a high enough dose of coved to catch it. By the way Dr. Fauci said back when him and his scientific elite were experimenting with Coved and modifying it for humans to catch, he said the risk of it escaping the lab was well worth the risk for the good of science, yes he is on video saying this. Ever wonder why he is the Spokesman? Cya.

JustMe October 7, 2021 - 9:42 PM - 9:42 PM

@wage slave, where were you in Idaho. Interested in the area

Jay Roller October 7, 2021 - 10:04 PM - 10:04 PM

New variant coming soon folks! Then we will have to go full lockdown again! Plandemic scamdemic! It’s never going to end! Boosters and masks for life! They can kiss it!

Original G October 7, 2021 - 11:09 PM - 11:09 PM

So was this double layer or whatever on masking an admission on “effectiveness” of previous masking requirements?

Haven’t been keeping up with press releases or “mandates” of CoCo health, or newsom, did they at any time refer to virus particle size in microns then mention capability of different masking materials to filter at the micron level?

Deb Shay October 8, 2021 - 5:22 AM - 5:22 AM

We just cross the bridge and spend our money in Solano county. Commie costa can kiss my behind.

WC October 8, 2021 - 8:28 AM - 8:28 AM

My daughter was in a Safeway the other day in Alameda County, not one person had a mask on according to her. Out here the lemmings are still wearing them while driving alone.

Justifiable languor October 8, 2021 - 9:23 AM - 9:23 AM

I don’t know how they get away with calling themselves health experts…oh I mean officials. Health police with degrees in political science or maybe marxism. In any case, betcha vaxx mandates are next. Get ready for the next round of boosters.

I have just read the wholistic/non GMO crowd are a major part of the anti vaxx and pro natural immunity population.

Obamavirus October 8, 2021 - 12:19 PM - 12:19 PM

The regime used “state of emergency “ loopholes to enact illegal mandates
Only such things as war, natural disasters and infectious outbreaks can be used in such a manner
If Newsom and the other blue and swing state D governors had tried to change long standing election rules and procedures that prevent fraud without the emergency rules they could have been more easily litigated prior to the election
The RNC and Trump got rolled ( or at least Trump)
Now Newsom was able to use the one party state legislature to rubber stamp the mail in ballot procedure permanently
There is indeed a possibility that they could simply use voting records from previous elections to submit fraudulent ballots en masse
(Like for the recall) ?
Who is going to check?
It is critical that these fraudulent procedures are not made part of national election law unless there are new mandatory audit procedures developed also

Chris October 8, 2021 - 2:25 PM - 2:25 PM

After the higher ups get busted enough for not following their own draconian policies, it would appear they have a sudden change in heart. If the media would actually do their job, masks would have disappeared long ago.

Matt Carrea October 9, 2021 - 3:17 AM - 3:17 AM

I’m in Orange County on the weekends. No masks requirements anywhere.
Even Uber drivers don’t wear them. Same in San Diego. Only liberal areas I guess does the pandemic exist.
