The Water Cooler – Has COVID Changed The Way You Tip?

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

Have you become a better tipper since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, or do you tip people the same as you did in the past for the services they provide?

No.
.
In general, I tip between 10 percent to 20 percent.
.
Exemplary service, though rare, earns 25 percent.

Had a job once castrating elephants. The pay wasn’t good but the tips were big. 🙂 Seriously though…no change for me.

@Simonpure…got a laugh from that

Isn’t the joke “circumcising elephants”?

Simonpure-

I think you meant circumcising elephants.

Still depends on service provided.

,,, yes a bit more – but only if excellent service … which is rare

Yes. We tip generously, but we went the extra mile to show appreciation to essential workers. It was appreciated.

Except for wearing a mask when required to, COVID hasn’t changed anything I do, including tipping.

Yes. Early in the pandemic I was tipping HUGE to my regular, favorite eateries, because I wanted to SHOW support, and GIVE support for them staying open. Now I’m mostly back to my old ways. The whole tipping thing is stupid, but I’m in Rome, so I do as the Romans do.

People tip waiters 20% who only walk back n forth 10 feet in a nice air conditioned restaurant but a lot tip zero to doordash, grubhub, uber eats delivery drivers who have to pay for gas, vehicle wear, pick up/wait for your food then deliver it to you dealing with crazy people on the road taking a chance of getting hit by a drunk driver or idiot driver all in 100 degree weather lately.

Gig workers like delivery drivers also have to pay the full cost for social security/Medicare taxes as half is not paid for by an employer since you are a self contracted worker.

and before say don’t like it get a better job at least these drivers are working instead of like those on unemployment staying on it for the boosts they are giving and living like leeches.

That’s great, but you didn’t answer the question.

Servers sually just take orders at most places and never check back to be sure everything is ok. expediters bring the food and busser’s clean up. Servers are supposed to share, but most don’t.
Cooks do all the work and get nada. I treat them as they treat me.

I haven’t tipped anyone Since COVID. I’d rather avoid the risk of getting infected by interacting with people, especially now with news of the variants coming out. Don’t go to any restaurants as I prefer to cook my own food.

yes
i tell them well after gas and bum and illegals and soda and property and sanctuary and voter approved taxes and now a 20% water and pge hike

here is your dime oh sorry 6 pesos

welcome to south america

Hell yeah.

No! I always tip 20 percent

Yes, I only order take out now when I get restaurant food. I usually always leave a tip of anywhere from $4-7. I am not getting drinks with refills, so I don’t consider it the same as dine-in tipping, where I normally tip 20-30% depending on the service.

Nope- I usually tip very well. I respect the people that work hard at serving other people and making their experience enjoyable. If they’re rude or inept in some way then I expect them to tip me for putting up with it. So far I’ve been unsuccessful in my attempt to enact the reciprocal rule however.

I’ve been tipping the same on the credit card, but also dropping a $20 in cash in the folder.
It’s been a tough time for wait staff, and I had a good year.
I don’t expect to fix their financials, just give them a smile behind their mask.

Joe

Happy that someone has the guts to work I usually tip 20 to 30 percent. I figure it is only money. May make them happy.

I don’t tip if they add a mandatory gratuity. And I don’t go back either. If they increase the rate of pay, I also don’t feel it is up to customers to tip. That is the reason that foodservice folks want an increase in pay, no? So they don’t have to rely on tips? Well, you cannot have it both ways.

I always leave the same tip,
a note that says “don’t step in anything you cant wash off”

While we were not at liberty to eat in a dining establishment, if we ordered, we would leave our standard 20% minimum tip, regardless. If I found that the restaurant deducted 20% (Mel’s did this) so they did not have to use Door Dash, etc., we would make up that 20% and then tip another 20%. The little bit I could do to help the restaurant employees. I will continue to tip the 20% when dining out, and if the restaurant appears to be struggling, the extra if not eating in.

Most definitely!
During the lockdown, we started getting a lot more things delivered, and I am very appreciative of those who do the delivery. As the lockdowns ended, I’ve been so happy to find open restaurants, I want to encourage waiters and waitresses to continue showing up.

I tip more generously now, but I also dine out less.

I tip the neighborhood gardeners to really crank up their leafblowers and blow all the debris into this lady’s yard to piss her off, she gets really spun, it’s most entertaining.

Hahahahahah that’s beyoooond hilarious

In California, servers make full wages.

Tipping is a ridiculous scam. People should be paid a living wage by their employer, and not require or expect gratuity from customers.

I do tip because I don’t want human waste or reproductive fluids in my food, but it’s an idiotic practice.

I used to not tip when getting take out and always tipped well when I eat in. Early in the shutdown I realized the servers who were working were not getting tipped so now I always tip.

I tip 5 bucks. I don’t think waiter deserves any more than $5 for not dropping my food on the floor.

Since there’s no difficulty between dropping a steak or dropping a taco its $5 no matter my order amount.

Tip?
What is this concept of which you speak?

Why should I tip more? My wage didn’t go up,
