New Recovery Centers Opening For Victims Of Violence, Abuse In Contra Costa County

Starting Thursday, three new recovery centers catering to the needs of people who have suffered physical violence, human trafficking and other forms of abuse will open in different parts of the county, according to officials from the Contra Costa Family Justice Center.

The new Contra Costa Trauma Recovery Center will offer free “trauma-informed mental health counseling, psychiatric evaluation, medication management and clinical case management” to all victims of violent crime, according to a news release.

Services are open to all violent crime survivors, including people who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, battery, gun and gang violence and human trafficking.

The services are being provided in partnership with Familias Unidas and are made possible because of a roughly $800,000, two-year grant from the California Victim Compensation Board, according to Family Justice Center executive director Susun Kim.

The money will help pay for three licensed clinicians, a contract psychiatrist and a part-time phycologist, Kim said.

While the grant money will only last two years, Kim is hopeful that the county can identify additional funding sources to keep the program running past this initial phase.

“We really have to stretch these dollars to provide much needed mental health care in our community,” Kim said. “Because of COVID so many people have needed mental health support.”

The new centers are in Richmond, Antioch and Concord and people looking for support can call the Family Justice Center’s main number at (510) 974-7200.

That’s great … but why now? This has been going on for years.. and just NOW they decide to do this? I find it kind of pathetic.

with all the releases from state pens, to all those entering this country illegally and the seemingly associated increase in crime, they found a cause to spend more money upon. I do believe there were these facilities available already (I know of volunteers to some). And the welcome wagon for the homeless will not reduce the crime rate either.

Well, what’s the solution then? A high percentage of homeless women is caused by those fleeing domestic violence.

Thanks

Wow. No winning with either of you. Doesn’t matter what people try to do to help – there’s always an assuming, critical eye with disrespect and dismissal for those who experience life struggles. So sad.

Nance, You are so right. To many see the glass half empty instead of half full. Seem to me the live to complain. Sad.

So, a state grant to an organization solely interested in helping Latino victims of crime.

Why not? lol

Domestic violence it not limited to one ethnic group. It happens in every ethic group, and also in every economic group. You sound totally unaware of the problem.

@hanne jeppesen I’m aware, alright. I’m aware that if the state funded a group primarily focused on helping white people, there would be universal outrage.

I guess you missed that glaring detail in my post.

You obviously have no idea how non-profits apply or receive grants. Also, you do not have to be Latino to utilize services provided by Famillas Unidas. Unidas and the family justice center provide amazing, life saving services. I was a client of the family justice center and have first hand knowledge of how hard, expensive and frustrating it can be to find help for trauma. This program will save lives regardless of the color of your fur, or the spots on your tail. I believe the cure for hateful dribble is to volunteer, spend time with folks you’re so eager to judge.

Good news about the recovery centers, way overdue.

Btw there is a typo – it should say there will be a part-time psychologist. A phycologist studies algae.

@May. Totally agree with you. And because these women have nowhere to go sometimes… They just keep going back, putting their lives in danger each time.
