The attitude of the restaurant is awful. Those store fronts should also put pressure on the landlord. They pay very high price to have a store up front, they shouldn’t pay that if they can’t be seen from the street. But seriously disappointed at the restaurants attitude and they should be boycotted. This whole ” I got what O want and don’t care how much it hurts you” attitude is destroying this country.

The blocked businesses have a legitimate complaint. The restaurants get to use the area IN FRONT, not the whole block.

No “outdoor dining” facilities should have been approved to be built on ANY street designed and built for motor vehicle traffic in the first place!
Tear all of these structures down. If any city wants to redesign/re-imagine a utopia where nobody drives an automobile anymore and there is no police presence, start from scratch.
That mask wearing outside, stupid. Really makes people want to get out and get vaccinated. Next flu season, these same people need quarantine themselves.
.
Collette Hanna, WC Economic Development Manager, is an idiot. Why was WC staff not proactive in having it reduced in scale when it was first erected? Perhaps scared of the whiny backlash from the business during the restricted period? Sometimes your job requires being tough!
.
That monstrosity magically appeared over a weekend and has been up for months. The restaurant owner is not being honest about what was actually “approved”. He’s a liar.
.
And do your job, Hanna!

The restaurant could easily alleviate the stress. Especially now that the mask edict is removed. Maybe just shut down Main Street on extended weekends to allow indoor and street dining. Didn’t Danville do this?

The blocked businesses do have a legitimate complaint. This is why people show up to city council meetings. Getting media coverage might help the blocked businesses. There will always be people who will shop there just to help the business succeed.

All the nouveau riche that has come to WC is kind of cool, as a 50-year resident I do accept all the change and at the same time miss the way it was when I first came here….. my guess is Main Street Kitchen has greased the local politicians plus they pay more in taxes so the powers that be look the other way glad the small boutiques are making some noise letting MSK have all the space was a total “Charley Brovo” move.

Sorry shop owner. I call BS. Maybe we can talk if you want to come to the table with stats that the business lost by someone not being able to see your storefront from the road or the opposite sidewalk is greater than the business gained by patrons sitting at the outdoor seating staring at your storefront + the overall net patronage to DTWC because of the added space and utilization of outdoor environment. I agree that these ad hoc pedestrian barriers with tables and chairs is an eyesore. They need to meet an aesthetic requirement that adds to the area. Though one cant exactly make the argument that WC has ever had a high bar for effective use of outdoor space.
You pay top dollar for a store front, the price for a store front on a main street is extremely expensive. That’s not what they are getting and what was expected when they moved in. We are open now, the restaurant should only take up the space in front of their store , not block other businesses. If you have a home with a great view, that you paid extra money just for that view. Would you be oaky with your nahabors parking a motor home in front and losing all your view, just because they want more space? Why should the restaurant be able to destroy another businesses. It is fully and well documented along with common knowledge, that small business like the ones they are blocking, that a majority of businesses is people who see the store front. If it’s a name brand business or one that has been around for a long time and have repeat consumers do better. At the very least , the landlord needs to deduct the rent difference for a store front and put it in the restaurant.

Typical government deflection of responsibility…they say they”assumed” something then put the onus on the business owner. Liars. You’re telling me no government inspector reviewed construction as it was going up? Doubtful. Government knew it was 80′ long and said “Okay”. Geez, they have absolutely no personal ethics to do the right thing, or take responsibility when they don’t…and they are not voted out. Shame on those of you who leave them in office. Yeah, you!

while I think the outdoor dining is great, the area should NEVER “hide” another business.
It should be only in front of the restaurant, not in front of any other business. Street view/access is part of why these stores are renting the particular space.
Common business sense, no?

Agreed I would never dinner next to moving traffic it’s just an accident waiting to happen.
“It was permitted to save the restaurant business”.
What about other businesses???
Why is Collette Hanna wearing a mask outdoors?
These masks really have become Political statements.
