The Association of Bay Area Health Officials, representing 12 Bay Area Health Officers and their Local Health Jurisdictions, strongly supports the California Department of Public Health’s strategy to continue with current masking guidance until June 15, when the State will align with the CDC’s updated masking guidance.
Large numbers of residents are still unvaccinated, not yet fully vaccinated, or not eligible to be vaccinated.
“Thanks to so many in our community who have gotten vaccinated, we have come a long way and can finally start to see a return to normalcy in our area,” said Dr. Chris Farnitano, Health Officer for Contra Costa County. “This next month is our chance to further increase vaccination rates. Wear your mask now, so we can get to June 15 together.”

This experiment has already been run in Texas and Florida. It did not cause any increase in cases or deaths. It’s literally a massive experiment, California with mask mandate, Texas without now for a month or two. There is no appreciable difference between them. Texas just had their first day with no covid deaths.

The only thing clowns like Farnitano will be punished for is if they are too lenient with their newfound power. They have every incentive to be as draconian as they can get away with. I think California is just being conservative. The more people we get vaccinated by June 15, the better off we all are. It is being very very safe on our end. If there was an outbreak, would you all be mad that they lifted the mask too early? Rather be safe than lose lives.

People were screaming for things to open up. Now that 1/3 of the country is vaccinated, infection rates are down and daily deaths are below 500 things are looking better and we can open up some. But COVID-10 is still here. Why not play it safe for a while longer?

No one’s telling you that you can’t keep wearing your mask if it makes you feel better. Just don’t tell me I have to.
30% is not the relevant number for our county. Vaccines start to offer significant protection within days of the first dose, even though it isn’t maxed out yet. Over 70% of our county who are over 12 have had at least one dose. 60% are fully vaxxed. Add in probably another 10% who had Covid and aren’t vaxxed, and we’ll have about 80% of the adult population with excellent protection within the next two weeks. Then consider that in states that dropped mask mandates recently, they had no upswing of cases! And we have far more people protected than they did at the time.
Health officials will always, always be biased towards more precautions. Doesn’t make it reasonable.

Isn’t it obvious why CA is waiting until June 15th to open up when most of the rest of the country is already open (with no rises in cases to speak of)? Three letters: CTA. Teachers union. If they opened up tomorrow, there would be no excuse for schools to stay partially closed (which most are). Pushing out to June 15th ensures all schools will be out, thus providing air cover to the teachers union. PS: report came out, the CTA spent more lobby $$ in CA this past year than big oil. It’s ALL about the $$$$$. Our kids and businesses are just pawns in this shameful game.
