A group of Black federal, state and local officials encouraged the state’s Black and African American residents to get vaccinated against the coronavirus as soon as they can.
The roundtable discussion — including state Secretary of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Shamann Walton and U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland — focused on the vaccine’s role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproportionately affected Black communities and other communities of color.
According to data from the California Department of Public Health, Black residents have received 3.2 percent of the 23.7 million vaccine doses administered statewide through Wednesday.
Black residents make up 6.5 percent of the state’s 39.5 million residents, according to 2019 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, while non-Hispanic white people make up 36.5 percent of the population.
Black Californians’ COVID-19 death rate per 100,000 people is also 7 percent higher than the state’s overall number of deaths per 100,000.
Participants on the panel acknowledged that vaccine hesitancy in spite of the pandemic’s disproportionate effects on people of color is due in part to distrust of the medical establishment, which has repeatedly failed to provide equitable health care and treatment to Black and African American people throughout history.
“That may have created some distrust,” Thurmond said. “For legitimate reasons, there’s distrust that may have existed. But we know that these vaccines can save lives.”

What a waste of taxpayer’s money. How much is the bill for this so called outreach? Which non-profits are awarded this contract? Who’s making $? Fact is, the african american population is distrustful of caucasian science and any outreach will not change their minds. They will do what they do. Just give out the vaccine as fast as we can to anyone who asks for it, no red tape. If some don’t want the vaccine, you can’t bully or guilt them into taking it. It’s a waste of taxpayer’s money, similar to welfare.
The rates of vaccinations are available daily by age group, by gender, by each city in Contra Costa, and by race and ethnicity. Is it age discrimination to report percentage vaccinated by age group? Is it sexist to report by gender?
Asians, Blacks, Whites and others ALL have increasing rates of vaccination. As of 11:30am yesterday 4/14 the percentage of the 858,878 vaccine doses in Contra Costa Co by race are: Asians 44%, Blacks 35%, Whites 42%. A non-hispanic white person could be someone with a hispanic name, but is of what is considered to be of non-hispanic descent, such as someone who is of Spanish or Portuguese descent. You read that correctly, if you are from SPAIN, you are non-hispanic.

ClayDen — A non-Hispanic white is someone like me. A white person with no Hispanic origin. What you’re describing (Spanish or Portuguese) is what’s considered a white Hispanic.
It can be confusing. The first time I was asked if I was a non-Hispanic white (survey) I told him I wasn’t sure. I get it now. Most whites are non-Hispanic whites.
The term “hispanic” comes from historical geographical maps of Europe that shows what is now Spain, Portugal, what is now part of North Africa at the Strait of Gibraltar was HISPANOLA.

Black and African American are not interchangeable terms. Elon Musk is a non-black African (may be American, don’t know if he is naturalized.) Same goes for Charlize Thereon.
I knew people of Italian (white) descent that were born and raised in South Africa. They emigrated to the US and are actual African Americans.
I knew a saphaddic Jew (non-black) who came from Morocco. He was also an African American.
